In ancient Greece, Socrates was a widely-recognized wise man. One day one fellow met the great philosopher and said, “Do you know what I just heard about your friend ”
“Hold on a minute,” Socrates replied. “Before telling me anything I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.”. “Triple filter ”. “That’s right,” Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test.
The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true ” “No,” the man said, “actually I just heard about it and…”. “All right,” said Socrates. “So you don’t know if it’s true or not.
Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good ” . “No, on the contrary…”. “So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him, but you’re not certain it’s true.
You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me ” “No, not really.”
“Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all ”
Well we can always participate in loose talks to curb our boredom. But when it comes to your friends its not worth it. Always avoid talking behind the back about your near and dear friends.
1. Why did Socrates stop the fellow when he wanted to tell him about his friend
A. Because he didn’t know the fellow.
B. Because he wanted to tell the fellow something first.
C. Because he knew the fellow wouldn’t tell him something useful.
D. Because he wanted the fellow to think twice before speaking.
2. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage
A. Socrates was a great philosopher in Ancient Greece.
B. The fellow wanted to tell Socrates something bad about his friend.
C. Socrates was curious to hear what the fellow wanted to tell him.
D. It’s not a good idea to gossip about our friends behind the back.
3. What does the underlined “curb” mean in the last paragraph
A. increase B. describe
C. reduce D. hide
根据倒数第二段中的“Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all ”(“好吧,”苏格拉底总结道,“如果你想告诉我的既不是真的,也不是好的,甚至也不是有用的,那你为什么要告诉我呢 ”)可推知,当有人想告诉他关于他朋友的事情时,苏格拉底要求他先通过一个测试,因为苏格拉底想让那个人在说之前先考虑清楚,即三思而后言。
根据第二段中的“Hold on a minute,” Socrates replied. “Before telling me anything I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.”.(“等一下,”苏格拉底回答。“在告诉我任何事情之前,我想让你先通过一个小测试。这就是所谓的三重过滤测试。”)可知,当那个人想告诉苏格拉底一些事情的时候,苏格拉底并没有急切地想听他会说什么,而是先让他通过一个测试。由此可知,C项“苏格拉底很想知道这个人想告诉他什么”陈述错误,符合题意要求。故选C。
【3题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词所在句Well we can always participate in loose talks to curb our boredom.(嗯,我们总是可以参加一些轻松的谈话来抑制我们的无聊)可知,划线词意为“抑制”。A. increase 增加;B. describe描述;C. reduce减少;D. hide躲藏。
Well we can always participate in loose talks to curb our boredom.(嗯,我们总是可以参加一些轻松的谈话来抑制我们的无聊)可知,划线词意为“抑制”。A. increase 增加;B. describe描述;C. reduce减少;D. hide躲藏。
B
The words “England” and “English” are perhaps the two most misused words in the English language. The British themselves often say England and English when they really mean Britain and British.
What’s the difference, you may ask. To understand the question we have to know something about the history of the country and its people.
We all know that Britain is an island country separated from the European continent by the English Channel. Actually there are two main islands. The larger one is called Britain, or Great Britain, and the smaller one is called Ireland, and these two, together with many small islands make up what is called the British Isles.
The British Isles is a geographical term. It is not the name of any country. At present it is made up of two countries, the larger of which is the one we very often inaccurately call England. The full official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but people call it Britain or Great Britain for that. It consists of England, Scotland, Wales and a small part of Ireland-the northeastern part.
People still tend to call Britain England not only because England is the largest in area and the most populous but mostly because England is the strongest and also the most influential country in every respect before it absorbed the other three countries(The whole of Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom at one time). Call it national chauvinism(沙文主义) if you like, but people in England call Britain England out of habit rather than conscious sense of superiority, though it annoys the Welsh and especially the Scots who are proud of their separate national tradition.
4. The British Isles is made up of_______.
A. one country B. two countries
C. two and a half countries D. three countries
5. The full official name of Britain is_______.
A. Great Britain
B. England
C. United Kingdom
D. the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
6. People call Britain England because of all of the following EXCEPT_______.
A. England is the largest in area and has the largest population.
B. people in England do so out of habit.
C. England is the nearest to the European continent.
D. England is the strongest and also the most influential in every respect.
7. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. The formation of the UK.
B. The chauvinism of the English.
C. The location of the British Isles.
D. The difference between “English” and “British”.
B 5. D 6. C 7. D
The British Isles is a geographical term. It is not the name of any country. At present it is made up of two countries, the larger of which is the one we very often inaccurately call England.(不列颠群岛是一个地理术语。
The full official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but people call it Britain or Great Britain for that.(正式的全称是大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国,但人们因此称它为不列颠或大不列颠)可知,英国的正式全称是大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国。
People still tend to call Britain England not only because England is the largest in area and the most populous but mostly because England is the strongest and also the most influential country in every respect before it absorbed the other three countries(The whole of Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom at one time).(人们仍然倾向于称英国为英格兰,这不仅是因为英格兰是面积最大、人口最多的国家,更主要是因为英格兰在吞并其他三个国家(爱尔兰的整个地区曾经是联合王国的一部分)之前,在各个方面都是最强大、最具影响力的国家)可知,人们仍然倾向于称英国为英格兰的原因里不包括英格兰是离欧洲大陆最近的。
The words “England” and “English” are perhaps the two most misused words in the English language. The British themselves often say England and English when they really mean Britain and British.(England和English可能是英语中最常被误用的两个词。 To understand the question we have to know something about the history of the country and its people.(要理解这个问题,我们必须了解这个国家和人民的历史)可知,本文主要介绍了England和English的区别。
People call Britain England because of all of the following EXCEPT_______.

Christmas Island which is barely a tiny spot on the world map, sits about 250 miles south off the coast of Central Java, and 1,650 miles from Perth, the nearest western Australian city. Technically, it’s part of Australia, but you’d never know from its location.
Christmas Island got its name from Captain William Mynors, an English sailor who accidentally landed on this unknown land on Christmas Day in 1643, though it wasn’t until the late 1800s that the island was properly surveyed.
With its warm temperatures and high rainfall, Christmas Island is home to all sorts of wildlife. Nearly two-thirds of the island is national park land, which is highly popular with bird-watchers.
No matter where you end up in the forest, you won’t be short on sightseeing spots. Hugh’s Dale Waterfall is eye-catching, and can only be reached by hiking through the rainforest. Once you arrive at the falls, go ahead and take a shower under the crashing water — not only is it clean enough to drink, it’s held sacred(神圣的) by local Buddhists, who believe it’s the center of the island’s "water universe."
Most people come for the beaches. Since the island is so small and has remained in its natural state for so long, all kinds of colorful fish can be found swimming around the island’s tropical reef. You might find yourself swimming with the world’s largest fish, the whale shark, which visits Christmas Island from November to April.
To get to Christmas Island, you’ll need to fly in from Perth or Fiji. Click here for more information.
8. Which of the following can NOT be done on Christmas Island
A. Watch wild birds. B. Drink fresh water.
C. Cycle to Hugh’s Dale Waterfall. D. Swim with a whale shark.

A. Central Java is a city in Australia.
B. Christmas Island is cold and wet all year round.
C. It is very dangerous to travel on Christmas Island.
D. There are many wonderful sights in the forest on the island.
10. Where is the passage most probably taken from
A. A sport magazine. B. A website.
C. A TV show. D. A movie review.

根据下文“Usually, that meant we were going to see someone important or ___2___ I would at least get a new toy.” 故选A。
A. which哪个;B. that那;C. when当… 根据句子结构可知, “we were going to see someone important” 和“___2___ I would at least get a new toy.”
A. less更少的;B. smaller更小的;C. better更好的;D. fewer更少的。根据下文“She said I would get “access(通向)to a world of toys.””
A. whether是否;B. what什么;C. how如何;D. why为什么。
A. 根据上文“I had no idea”和下文“I had no idea”可知,这两句话是并列的关系,属于类似的情况。故选A。
A. bring up养大;B. end up结束;C. take up占据;D. pass by经过。

Slowly Ethan poured the milk into the bowl so that the corn flakes rose above the rim just like Nick’s. He was a little unhappy as Nick, his big brother, would leave home for his college after breakfast. He asked Nick what he would have for his breakfast at college, who smiled, hugged the corn flake box and joked that he’d better take that together.
On the way to the airport, Mom dropped off Ethan at his school. Ethan was a little unhappy because he couldn’t go to see Nick off as it was class photo day. The brothers hugged each other good-bye. Nick grinned, softly reminding Nick to smile big for the camera. Ethan waved at the car until it turned the corner.
Ethan missed seeing his brother at breakfast every day. From time to time Nick sent photos home. One was of him studying in the library with a tall stack (堆) of books. Ethan stared at the photo for a long time. Nick was smiling, but he looked tired. Maybe it was hard to get enough sleep at college.
A couple of moths later, Mom decided to visit Nick for his birthday. Ethan started busily preparing his backpack. He packed a box of corn flakes. After thinking a long time, he found Nick’s pillow and tried to squish it into the backpack. Seeing that, Mom smiled saying Nick had everything he needed at college. Ethan got puzzled. Then what should I take he wondered. It wasn’t long before Ethan found some scissors. He cut one of his new school photos and slid it into the pocket of his backpack.

C
Christmas Island, which is barely a tiny spot on the world map, sits about 250 miles south off the coast of Central Java, and 1,650 miles from Perth, the nearest western Australian city.
Once you arrive at the falls, go ahead and take a shower under the crashing water — not only is it clean enough to drink, it’s held sacred(神圣) by local Buddhists, who believe it’s the center of the island’s "water universe."
8 Which of the following can NOT be done on Christmas Island
A. Watch wild birds. B. Drink fresh water.
C. Cycle to Hugh’s Dale Waterfall. D. Swim with a whale shark.
9. What can we infer from the passage
