My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

C. made up his mind to run D. lost hope

C
When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, "Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish." I remember being even more upset then because, "I’m not a fish!" I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids and the sun hurts their eyes... The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, "We all need to think like salespeople." But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, "If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman." What he said was, "You need to think like a fish." Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.

A. it easy to think like a customer B. his father’s fishing advice inspiring
C. his first boss’s sales ideas reasonable D. it difficult to sell services to poor people

Once when I was facing a decision of high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave——and mighty forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet — and stopped him cold.”
Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
31. Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past
A. He faced huge risks. B. He tried and failed.
C. He was afraid of failure. D. He was not forced by courage.
32. What is the reason of Tim’s success
A. His physical strength. B. His spiritual force.
C. His hard work and skills. D. His passion for football.
33. According to paragraph 5, what might a person with boldness do
A. He might do things in an extreme way. B. He can build up confidence overnight.
C. He might try to do something and fail. D. He might try to do nothing and succeed.
34. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage
A. To encourage people to be courageous. B. To advise people to build up physical power.
C. To tell people the ways to guarantee success. D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.

Surely, there will be setbacks and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.(勇敢——一种将自己延伸到极致的意愿——不是一夜之间就能获得的。

Are You a Prisoner of Perfection
Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach ___35___ Are you setting yourself up for failure and shame when you can’t achieve the unachievable Understanding what drives perfectionism is the first step toward releasing this self-created anchor that keeps us stuck.
Shame and fear are often the hidden drivers of perfectionism. We believe that if we can fashion a perfectly polished personality, flash our intelligence, and perfect our humour, then no one can hurt us with criticism and we’ll win respect and approval.
___36___ Politicians who display a desperate need to be right and refuse to acknowledge mistakes or uncertainty are often driven by a secret shame. They fear that showing vulnerability(弱点) will expose them to the accusation that they’re weak. They stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no clothes.
Perfectionism keeps us leaning toward the future. We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better. ___37___ However, if we can’t relax and enjoy lighter moments, then we become prisoners of our perfectionism. We get painfully self-conscious and take ourselves too seriously. Sadly, we deprive(剥夺) ourselves of the simple pleasure of enjoying the moment and being ourselves.
___38___ We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure. Without failures, we’ll never learn from our mistakes; we’ll never move forward in our lives. Those who succeed have made countless mistakes. The important thing is to learn from our error, forgive ourselves and move on.
Being human, perfection is impossible. ___39___ Releasing ourselves from the desire to protect our image, we’re freed to sail gracefully through our successes and failures—and enjoy our precious life.
A. Do you hold an idealized vision that is impossible to realize
B. A cure to perfectionism is to make room for our human shortcomings.
C. Do you fear that others will be horrified by what you judge about yourself
D. The addiction to staying perfect protects us from any sign of being imperfect.
E. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best and self-correcting along the way.
F. People who are addicted to perfection are often isolated, even if they seem outgoing and popular.
G. By accepting ourselves as we are and doing our best, we begin to rid the shame that drives perfectionism.
A 36. D 37. E 38. B 39. G
Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach 可知本空为列举完美主义带来的问题是为一个你无法达到的目标而奋斗、有一个无法实现的理想愿景,故选A。
They stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no clothes.
We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better.
We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure.
Releasing ourselves from the desire to protect our image, we’re freed to sail gracefully through our successes and failures—and enjoy our precious life.
It is normal to feel worried and stressed during an exam period. Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject. That is why most people can understand your anxiety around the exam period. However, too much worrying could be the start of failure. Here are some tips to help you stay positive.
From attending classes to completing homework, the period leading to an exam is always a difficult process. This is why preparing well for the exam is key to ensure your efforts do not go fruitless. Going through practice questions beforehand never disappoints for any exam. For example, if you are a physician preparing for the USMLE exams, you could check for the USMLE practice questions before the real exam time just to familiarize yourself with the exam. By so doing, you are more guided on how and where exactly to review.
Although some exams are important and could determine the future of your academic life, it cannot determine your whole life. You might have done a thorough revision but still, the first paper ended up extremely tough for you. At this point, you can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.
It can be really motivating for you to know that you have something positive coming up right after going through a difficult exam time. Being able to plan for a trip or buy yourself a gift after an exam is awesome enough. The fact that you are able to face the exams should be encouraging enough and you should appreciate yourself for it.
Exams times are temporary(暂时的) and they are usually for a good course, In any case, you will only be dealing with the exams for a short time and so you should put all your time and energy there.
40. According to the passage, why is it understandable to be anxious around the exam period
41. What does the author advise us to do when the first paper is rather difficult
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
>It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results.
43. Please briefly present your ways to stay positive during an exam period.(In about 40 words)
40. Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject.
41. You can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.
42. It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results.
Because it is not getting the exxpected results that motivates you. And it is after going through a difficult exam time that motivates you.
43. First, give yourself a good psychological hint that you should be positive and optimistic to deal with the exam. Second, relax yourself properly and don't always keep nervous. Third, don't be afraid to fail the exam.
根据文章第一段中的“Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject. That is why most people can understand your anxiety around the exam period.”(考试表明进步,而不及格可能意味着在同一门课程或科目上落后。 Exams show progress, and failing could mean falling behind in the same course or subject.。
根据第三段中的“You might have done a thorough revision but still, the first paper ended up extremely tough for you. At this point, you can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.”(你可能已经做了一个彻底的修改,但是,第一张试卷对你来说还是很难。 You can only keep a hopeful mind that the next one will be easier and that you will do better.。
根据第四段中的“It can be really motivating for you to know that you have something positive coming up right after going through a difficult exam time.”(在经历了一场艰难的考试之后,你知道有一些积极的事情要来,这会给你很大的动力。)可知,在句子“It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results.”中,“when you achieve expected results.” It is encouraging for you to know that something good will happen when you achieve expected results. Because it is not getting the exxpected results that motivates you. And it is after going through a difficult exam time that motivates you.。
根据题干“Please briefly present your ways to stay positive during an exam period.”(请简单介绍一下在考试期间保持积极心态的方法。) First, give yourself a good psychological hint that you should be positive and optimistic to deal with the exam. Second, relax yourself properly and don't always keep nervous. Third, don't be afraid to fail the exam.。

24. A month before the marathon, the author ____________.
A. was well trained B. felt scared
C. made up his mind to run D. lost hope
25. Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year
A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher.
B. To amuse the readers with a funny story.
C. To show he was not talented in sports.
D. To share a precious memory.
26 How was the author’s first marathon
A. He made it. B. He quit halfway.
C. He got the first prize. D. He walked to the end.
27. What does the story mainly tell us
A. A man owes his success to his family support.
B. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. One is never too old to learn.
C
When I was nine years old I loved to go fishing with my dad.
28. What did the author’s father really mean
A. To read about fish. B. To learn fishing by oneself.
C. To care about fish’s feeling. D. To study fishing in many ways.
29. According to the author, fish are most likely to be found .
A. in deep water on sunny days B. in deep water on cloudy days
C. in shallow water under sunlight D. in shallow water under waterside trees
30. After entering the business world, the author found________.
A it easy to think like a customer B. his father’s fishing advice inspiring
C. his first boss’s sales ideas reasonable D. it difficult to sell services to poor people
D
They are potential powers we possess: energy skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.

For example, if you are a physician preparing for the USMLE exams, you could check for the USMLE practice questions before the real exam time just to familiarize yourself with the exam.
