Step1 Lead in :
The earth is our home and it is in danger. Once people did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were few people on the earth, and natural resources seemed to be unlimited. Today things are different. The world has become more and more crowded. We are using up our natural resources,and polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, human life on earth will not survive. We realize that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet,with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught.We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear. Yet, we continue to use powerful machines to cut down more and more trees. We see that if rivers are polluted with waste products, we will die. Yet, waste products are still put into rivers.
To protect our earth,we should do something .We know that a little thing won’t make great changes,but if all the people on the earth do bad things.We can start from little things in our daily life.We can’t live without water,so we must save water.And we can’t live without air,so we should plant more trees.Trees can make air fresh.We shouldn’t throw rubbish everywhere.
Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.
It is everyone’s duty to do something to protect our earth.Let’s start right now.
Step2 Presentation
1. Let the students guess the new words by showing the pictures and talk about the earthquake that happened in Sichuan.
2. T: We all remember the Sichuan earthquake ,but we don’t know the Taiwan earthquake.There was an earthquake in Taiwan in 1999. Many people lost their lives in the earthquake , but a boy called Timmy surrived. Let’s listen to the story to see what happened to him
3. T: What do people often do when the earthquake happened? Teach some new words and phrases.
do some shopping shake v. (shaking n. ) hear a big noise like thunder in fear (be frightened) scream v. in all directions fall down not ---at all come down calm down in a great hurry
4. After learning these new words ,help students finish PatrB1on P96. Check it together.
5. Read the passage ,answer the following questions:
1) Where was Timmy when the earthquake started?
2) What was Timmy doing when the earthquake started?
3) What happened to the people and buildings?
4) Where was Timmy when the shaking stopped?
5) What did Timmy do while he was waiting for help?
6) How was he saved?
Step3 Listening and skiming
1.Play the tape for Studenets and check general understanding by asking some ‘wh’ questions
2.Students skim the passage and do exercises on PartD.
3. Students listen to the tape and read after it together.
Step4 Reading and answering
1. Listen and read after the tape one paragraph by one paragraph.Check if they understand by asking more questions about the passage.
2.Invite the students to read the whole passage in front of the class.Encourage them to mime and gesture in order to illustrate the different aspects of the experience.
Step5.Discussion
What can you do when you are in the earthquake ?
What will you do when the others are in danger ?
Ask students to say something about natural disasters and how to survive from them?
Step 6.Practice
Finish the exercises in B2 and C. Check the answers with the whole class.
Retell the passage with keywords. Then encourage some of them to retell in front of the class.

Write a report :How to protect the environment
Step8.Homework.
Read the story about Timmy and try to retell it.
Copy the new words and phrases.
Remember the language point.
Try to learn the useful words and sentences.
