If you're in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to want to help you. As a director, I suggest, I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go.
In the 1986 movie Nothing in Common, Jackie Gleason's character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max's hopelessness about being out of work. I was looking for some ways that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell "The Great One" about acting?
Out of fear I decided to direct by suggestion, and I sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. "So Max is sad, right?" I said.
Gleason nodded,
"And he's probably still carrying his pens with his name on them--the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?"
Gleason nodded.
"So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?"
He was silent for a moment. "Why don't I throw them overboard?"
I stood up and turned toward the crew. "Hey, everybody, Jackie has a wonderful idea. Let's shoot it."
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and said with a smile, "Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?"
You and your team can discover the answers to problems together. When there are no prizes or gold stars for those who get the solution first, you'll all benefit when everything turns out right.
The writer tells us that, to succeed in the project you are in charge of, you should ______.
A. make everyone work for you B. get everyone willing to help you
C. let people know you have the final say D. keep giving orders to everyone

B. Jackie Gleason is very angry when he is fired from his job
C. Max, a character in the film, is in very low spirits when he loses his job

The underlined part "The Great One" (in Paragraph 3) refers to ______.
A. Gleason B. the director himself C. Max D. Max's boss

A. Gleason succeeded in hitting upon a wonderful idea.

C. Gleason was confident about his work the next day.
D. Gleason appreciated the director's way of directing films.
The most suitable title for the passage is ______.

Life is difficult.
But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it.
Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems depending on their nature cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole solving problems that life has its meaning.
Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
From the passage, it can be inferred that ______.
A. not everybody has problems B. we become stronger by facing and solving the problems in life
C. people like to complain about their problems D. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain
The writer probably uses just one short sentence in the first paragraph to ______.

According to the passage, we give school children difficult problems to solve in order to ______.
A. encourage them to learn B. teach them to fear the pain of solving problems
C. help them learn to deal with pain D. teach them how to respect for problems
The saying from Benjamin Franklin "Those things that hurt, instruct." suggests that ______.
A. we do not learn from experience B. we do not learn when we are in pain
C. pain teaches us important lessons D. pain cannot be avoided

If you're in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to want to help you.1/5 As a director, I suggest, I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go.
In the 1986 movie Nothing in Common, Jackie Gleason's character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman.2 The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max's hopelessness about being out of work. I was looking for some ways that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell "The Great One" about acting?3
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and said with a smile, "Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?"4

Life is difficult.7
But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it.
Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties8 as if life should be easy.
It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn.9 As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct."10 It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
