What is a taboo? (Para.1)
A taboo is a social action that is not allowed. Taboos are often connected with religion. They can include eating certain foods, relations between people, body language and gestures.
If you are from India, you may not eat beef because of your religion(宗教).In India, it is rude to shake hands or give someone something with your left hand.
Japanese people dislike it when people do not look at their business cards. Underline the taboos in Para. 2 that help explain some of these unusual incidents.

_________FormatDear Mr Singh,
I’m writing to apologize for any misunderstandings that occurred when I showed you around Beijing the other day.
I felt rather strange when you would not shake hands with me. I did not realize that there are some taboos in different countries and cultures. After reading a magazine article, I know that people from India do not shake hands with their left hands. I should not have held out my left hand to you. And I now know you do not eat beef because of your religion.
I feel very sorry for not having known these taboos earlier. I hope you can forgive me for all these misunderstandings. I hope our next meeting will be happier.
Yours sincerely, MelodySampleWrite a letter of apology to Takashi/Hudson to explain misunderstandings.
Work in pairs, each writing a different part. WritingDear Mr. Hudson,
I am writing to apologize for any misunderstandings that occurred when I showed you around Beijing the other day.
I felt rather strange when you would not get on the boat because you thought it was too crowded while I considered that there was a lot of space. After reading a magazine, I know that people from the USA feel uncomfortable if others are too close to them. I know it is a matter of ‘personal space’. So now I understand why you did not want to get on the boat then.
I feel sorry for not having known these taboos earlier. I hope you can forgive me for all these misunderstandings. I hope our next meeting will be happier.
Yours sincerely,
LeoDear Mr Takashi,
I am writing to apologize for any misunderstandings that occurred when I showed you around Beijing the other day.
I noticed you were a bit upset when I put the business card in my pocket without looking at it. And I did not know why you bought so many gifts. After reading a magazine article, I know that Japanese people give out their business cards when they greet others and they would like others to look at their cards carefully. So I should have read your card before I put it in my pocket. And I also know why you bought so many gifts. Because gift-giving is expected in Japan and on a trip, you must bring back lots of gifts.
I feel very sorry for not having known these taboos earlier. I hope you can forgive me for all these misunderstandings. I hope our next meeting will be happier.
Yours sincerely,
