At the age of seven I started taking violin lessons. I practiced half an hour every day, went to lessons once a week, and occasionally played in a group concert. Like most kids, I always thought practicing was boring. If my parents hadn’t been there to make me practice, I probably would have put down my violin and never have picked it up again.
I met Moira when I was 11 at an Irish music party. Moira hosted the party that night, playing the violin, singing and dancing. She made sure that everyone in the room got involved and had a great time. I immediately fell in love with the music she played and the energy that she brought to it. Just a few days after that party, I took my first lesson with Moira, and I continued taking lessons with Moira throughout middle school.
When I started playing the violin with Moira, playing music became something that I loved. She introduced me to so many types of music, from Irish to Old Time, to Cajun. Moira also taught me to play the guitar. Soon we started performing together and were shocked to discover that people actually wanted to hear us! When I began to play the violin, practicing was something that I did at home in my living room, but with Moira’s influence it quickly became something that I did everywhere. I played on street corners, at festivals, at the beach, at parties, at weddings, and late at night in my friends' kitchens.
Moira took the music out of the classroom and brought it to life. Her passion (激情) was not only for playing music, but also for sharing it. My time with Moira allowed me to grow both musically and personally. I have met so many special people and had so many invaluable experiences. Moira has proven to be the most important influence in my musical development, and also my invaluable friend.
24. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. The writer had her violin lessons every day.
B. The writer disliked the kids who hated the violin.
C. The writer usually played music in school concerts.
D. At first the writer was not active in learning the violin.
25. What can we infer from the passage
A. The writer was proud of Moira’s achievements in music.
B. The writer became a popular local actress.
C. The writer spent all her spare time playing the violin.
D. The writer had more self confidence in terms of performing.
26. What can we know from the last paragraph
A. Moira didn’t like to play music in the classroom.
B. Moira helped the writer a lot with her personal life.
C. Moira had great influence on the writer’s life.
D. Moira was very thankful for the writer’s support.
27. What would be the best title for the passage
A. My Way to Success. B. My Invaluable Friend.
C. My Middle School Life. D. How I Learned the Violin.

With the world’s attention on vaccines, now it feels like a good moment to sing the praises of an often forgotten contributor to their development. Three hundred years ago this month, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu got her daughter inoculated(接种)against smallpox, making her child the first person in the West to be protected in this way. Without Montagu’s willingness to adopt a practice she had learned from other cultures, the introduction of vaccines around 80 years later would never have taken place.
Montagu first witnessed inoculation when she accompanied her husband to Turkey. Inoculation had started in Asia, probably in China, as early as the 10th century AD. Montagu observed how older women in Turkey took a tiny amount of pus(脓)from a person with smallpox. They then used needles to make cuts on people’s wrists and ankles and added the pus to their bloodstream. This helped people gain immunity from future infection.
Like other visitors to the country’ Montagu took steps to ensure that her son was inoculated. This worked well, but she knew that trying it in England would be far more challenging. Inoculation performed by unlicensed amateurs would threaten doctors’ professional standing and potentially rob them of valuable income. Some people also disagree with the practice, as they saw it as going against nature.
Back in England, Montagu observed smallpox infections became increasingly severe. Eventually, in April 1721, she decided to use the Turkish practice to have her daughter inoculated, because she believed that the rewards would outweigh the risks. After a safe time had passed following the inoculation, Montagu allowed doctors to examine her daughter.
Doctors in Britain gradually accepted the practice. About 80 years later, a pioneering physician found smallpox vaccines to destroy smallpox completely. As early as last century, academics argued that Montagu was no more than an enthusiastic amateur. In truth, she made a vital scientific contribution towards finding the cure for smallpox.
28. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The origin of smallpox inoculation. B. Turkish women’s invention of inoculation.
C. The benefits from smallpox inoculation. D. Montagu’s first access to inoculation.
29. Why did Montagu know it was hard to try inoculation in England
A. Because it might harm doctors' interests. B. Because deep down it was against nature.
C. Because it was a foreign practice. D. Because it might cost valuable money.
30. What could have led doctors in Britain to accept inoculation
A. The severe situation in smallpox infections. B. The result of Montagu’s daughter’s inoculation.
C. A physician’s discovery of smallpox vaccines. D. Montagu’s focus on its rewards rather than its risks
31. Which of the following can be used to describe Montagu
A. a fearless scientist B. a brilliant inventor C. a devoted explorer D. an unsung hero
D
Andie Ang’s personal interest in monkeys was awakened when she was a child. In 1995. Ang’s father saw some sailors mistreating a small young African monkey and brought it home.
Just ten at the time, Ang clearly remembers her excitement on first seeing the golden-furred little monkey. She named him Ah Boy and they soon became close companions. “I would cycle through the neighbourhood and Ah Boy would always follow me,” recalls Ang. “Neighbors would stop to look and comment, ‘Oh, so cute!’” Ah Boy quickly developed a daily routine of climbing onto Ang’s shoulders to pull her hair apart in search of anything that shouldn’t have been there.
But as the years passed, the family became unable to care for the monkey, so Ang turned to the internet for help. After a complicated and costly process, the day arrived for Ang and Ah Boy to say goodbye. It was a tearful parting for her. Later that day, Ang made up her mind to study monkeys. “The time we spent together made me want to know more about monkeys, the threats to them, and how we can help,” she says.
After getting a Life Sciences degree, Ang went on to complete a PhD in Biological Anthropology with a specialty in Raffles’ banded langurs(黑脊叶猴), a critically endangered species which hadn’t been studied for 15 years.
Today, she spends hours in Singapore’s Central Catchment Nature Reserve, where the entire local population of Raffles’ banded langurs can be found, doing field research in the forest. Her group has done lots of things to preserve this species, identifying and naming every monkey living in residential areas. They enjoyed discovering their individual personalities. As a result of Ang’s work and growing support among locals, the community has come to better understand the value of native wildlife. The future of this small population of Raffles’ banded langurs has become a lot more certain.

Most of us haven’t been taught how to apologize (道歉). Sometimes our efforts tend to be hurtful and can make people feel even worse. When the apology is absent or it’s a bad apology, it puts a crack in the very foundation of a relationship and can even end it. And that’s why it is important to get it right. A good and responsible apology can meet the moment and improve our relationships. ___36___
Less is more.
Keep your apology short and avoid the drama. If you’ve forgotten to return your friend’s bike, you don’t have to overdo it as if you’ve run over her kitten. Over-apologizing is not only annoying—it affects the flow of the conversation and shifts (转移) the focus away from the person who needs to be paid attention to. ___37___ .
No ifs or buts.
When you’re apologizing for something, it’s essential to show true sadness and regret. ___38___ . “But” almost always means a criticism, or an excuse. It doesn’t matter whether what you say after the “but” is true. The “but” makes your apology false.
___39___ .
If you always listen for what you don’t agree with in order to defend yourself and correct the facts, it will do harm to both sides. Instead, you should keep an open mind and listen with an aim to understand the other person.
___40___ . An apology isn’t the only chance you ever get to address the existing issue. The apology is also the chance to establish the ground for future communication. When done with attention and care, an apology can be a channel for greater understanding and deeper connection.
A. Be real
B. Drop your defenses
C. Here are some tips to offer an apology
D. You’ve made the apology all about you
E. A good apology is a beginning, not an end
F. A sincere apology does not include ifs or buts
G. It’s not “I’m sorry” that fixes the problem, but your deeds

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary —the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment.” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.

I missed a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. “I spelled contribution with ‘s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’.
