Teaching aims:
Practise and reinforce the new vocabulary students have just learnt.
Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the new words and expressions which are related to the words about describing a country.
Teaching procedures:
Step1:lead-in
Begin the lesson by reviewing the reading passage “Canada- land of the maple tree”
e.g:
What subjects are covered in the reading passage?
How are these subjects organized?
Let students discuss in small groups and write down all the answers reported by students on blackboard.
Step2:Vocabulary learning
1). Ask student to read in partA . Have students find out all the types mentioned in the text.
Check students’ understanding of the article, ask students to read passage in partA again.
What do the words flora and fauna refer to?
What does the word “monarchy” mean?
Which subject(s) are you most interested in? Why?
2). Ask students to focus on partB. Make sure that they understand the make-up of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Then answer the following questions:
What countries is Great Britain made up of?
What is the UK made up of?
What other Commonwealth nations do you know of?
3). Ask students to focus on Part C, and check students’ understanding and application of the new words we learned in Part A and B.
Step3:Extension
Ask students to complete partD in pairs. Encourage them to consult a dictionary when they have questions before asking you. Then check the answers as a class.
