Dear George
I’m more than delighted to hear from you In your letter, you asked me about my career choice for the future, so I’now writing to share my views about it.
In the future, I'm dying to be a doctor. For one thing, if I am a doctor, I can make use of what I
have learned to relieve patients’ pains and even save their lives. For another, I have always shown
great interest in Chinese medicine, which features magic effect. Should I be admitted by a medical college this year, I would make every effort to rediscover the value of Chinese medicine, making it more popular in the world.
Best wishes!

Li Hua
第二节
Paragraph 1:
Jennifer took up her phone and looked at the screen. It was Yui Fay. She suggested Jennifer bring more clothes as they would have a big project tonight. Confused though she was, Jennifer did what she was told as always. She packed a few more clothes, the red dress included, and left for the appointed restaurant. Yui Fay had not arrived, so She took her time to scan the menu and thought about what to order.
Paragraph 2:
Just then, someone was coming towards Jennifer. Jennifer looked up and saw the face that she had been dreaming these days. “Yui Fay!” She shouted excitedly and ran to give her a big hug. Yui Fay smilingly hugged her back and told her what the big project was. Let’s take a bus trip to Barcelona and relive our adventure! Yue Fay hadn't changed a bit, still the wild girl she used to be. And Jennifer knew immediately that it would be a great day.葫芦岛市普通高中2021-2022学年高三上学期期末学业质量监测英语

The following top places that are worth visiting in China are recommended on the tourism website.
Gannan
Located in south western Gansu province and the northeast of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Gannan has both Tibetan culture and spectacular plateau (高原) landscape. With the average altitude (高度) of 3, 000 meters above sea level, you can experience Tibetan culture and enjoy the plateau scenery, grand grasslands, Tibetan villages, unique mountain peaks, and hidden wonderlands without the risk of altitude sickness in October.
Yading
Yading, a place where you can gain insight into the Tibetan minority culture, can be available via Daocheng. The golden fall colors here are splendid. The red bushes of Hongcaodi combined with the yellow leaves under the clear blue sky are believed to exhibit the colors of heaven. The temples in these mountains represent the local Buddhist culture.
Kaili
Kaili is one of the best places as a base for exploring minority cultures. In Kaili, the museum, the Sunday market, and the villages nearby with their unique culture and architecture are all worth a visit. It is said that in Kaili “grand festivals occur there every three days, while minor ones occur every day.” Autumn is a perfect season for outdoor activities, when you can enjoy the fresh air and cool weather.

There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”
When my children were born, I memorized every detail about them: the skin that felt so soft, the lips that looked like a pink flower, and the eyes that looked deep into my soul. And, of course, their hands.
As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease them back to sleep. They clung (抓住) to me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.
My hands picked them up when they fell, and clapped louder than anybody else at their sports games and plays. Their hands waved at me from the window of a school bus, the stage of an auditorium (观众席), and from the bottom of a pool.
As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn’t hold my hand much anymore. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now. But when you’ve been needed so much for such a long time, it’s hard to step back and feel unnecessary.

Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.
At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become mature. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other but in much more different ways than before.
That scene has replayed in various ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches”you from afar.
24. How did the author get along with her children when they were young
A. She was very strict with them. B. She overprotected them.
C. She was too busy to take care of them. D. She developed a close bond with them.
25. How did the author feel when her kids became more independent
A. She found it hard not to be needed anymore.
B. She felt lonely when living apart from them.
C. She was worried that they couldn’t manage themselves.
D. She was pleased to be able to step back and enjoy herself.
26. The underlined word “mature” in paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to _________.
A. ripe B. full-grown C. big D. complete
27. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A. To explore how to interact with children.
B. To describe the growth of her children.
C. To show the power of the touch of a hand.
D. To present how parents influence their kids.

It happens every spring. Flowers suddenly burst out everywhere on the same day, as if they were in tune with one another. But how exactly do plants “know” when to flower
It is a question that has puzzled biologists for years. But according to Science Daily, a US research group may have finally answered it—the secret lies in a protein called FKF1. This allows plants to sense the differences in day lengths so that they can tell the seasons are changing.
Researchers spotted the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis. They found that the FKF1 protein is a photoreceptor (感光器). This means it is sensitive to, and can be activated (激活) by sunlight.
Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon throughout the year. If there is no light at this time, for example, in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein won’t be activated. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the FKF1 protein can be activated by daylight and the plants “know” it is time to flower. “The presence of light in the late afternoon is the signal for plants that the days are getting longer and that it is the optimal (最佳的) time for flowering,” explained Takato Imaizumi, assistant professor at the University of Washington and leader of the study. This daylight-sensing system also keeps plants from flowering when conditions are poor for growing, such as during autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short.
Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that the process is similar in many other more complex plants, including crops like rice and wheat. This could be useful to the agricultural industry.
“If we can control the timing of flowering, we might be able to increase crop yield by accelerating or delaying this,” Imaizumi said. “Also, if we could control the timing of flowering in horticultural (园艺的) plants, they may be worth more commercially.”
New technology based on this research might also lead to higher yields of biofuel (生物燃料) plants. This would be helpful for providing energy.
28. The passage is mainly about .
A. how plants “know” when to flower
B. what people can do with plants
C. how seasons are changing
D. how people control the time of flowering
29. The best time for flowers to come out is when .
A. it rains in spring B. there is light in the late afternoon
C. it is getting dark D. the sun goes down early
30. What can we learn from the article
A. When there is no sunlight, the FKF1 protein won’t be produced.
B. Plants are particularly sensitive to cold weather and shorter days.
C. We are getting closer to regulating plant flowering times.
D. Researchers have studied how the FKF1 protein works in rice and wheat.

Tianwen-I probe enters orbit around Mars
After nearly seven months in space, China’s Tianwen-I probe successfully entered the orbit around Mars on February 10. It marks the first time that a Chinese spacecraft has orbited an outside-earth planet.
Tianwen-I consists of an orbiter, a lander and a six-wheeled rover carrying scientific instruments. A 3,000-Newton engine was fired up at 7: 52 pm to slow down the spacecraft. After some 15 minutes, precise braking (刹) near Mars helped the probe succeed in entering the orbit around the Red Planet. That means Tianwen-I has become China’s first man-made satellite of Mars and achieved the first goal of its three-step mission—orbiting, landing and roving.
Tianwen-I makes China the sixth country to ever reach Mars. It was launched by a long March-5 carrier rocket, China’s largest launch vehicle, on July 23, 2020. The probe has flown 475 million kilometers and was 192 million kilometers away from Earth when it reached the Mars orbit.
Tianwen-I will now conduct several orbital corrections to enter a temporary Mars “parking” orbit, looking for potential landing sites in preparation for a “touch-down” in May or June. The most challenging part of the mission will be the soft landing.
Chinese space engineers and scientists have chosen a relatively flat region in the southern part of the Utopia Planitia, the largest plain on Mars, as the potential landing zone. The site was selected for its conditions for a safe landing and scientific research value. It has not been investigated by other countries yet, so the scientific data can be shared with the international community to enrich the world’s understanding of the Red Planet.
After the landing, the rover will be set free to conduct scientific exploration and it has an expected lifespan (使用期限) of at least 90 Martian days (about three months on Earth). The orbiter, with a design lifespan of one Martian year (about 687 days on Earth), will relay (接转) communications to and from the rover while carrying out its own scientific detection work. If China can succeed in orbiting, landing and roving with Tianwen-I, it will take further challenges on the next Mars mission: collecting and bringing back samples from the surface.
Tianwen-I means “Questions to Heaven” and comes from a poem written by Qu Yuan, one of the greatest poets of ancient China. The name represents the Chinese nation’s persistent determination in pursuing truth and science and exploring nature and the universe.
32. Tianwen-I had to before it entered the orbit around the Red Planet.
A. speed up B. slow down C. change its direction D. pause for a while
33. What is the approximate flying-speed of Tianwen-I probe
A. 38, 000 km per hour. B. 9,000 km per hour.
C. 94, 000 km per hour. D. 66,700 km per hour.
34. Why has one of the regions in the Utopia Planitia been chosen as the landing zone
A. It is nearer to the orbit. B. The climate conditions there are satisfactory.
C. It is easy for the rover to move on. D. It is ideal for landing and scienrific research.
35. What is the most difficult for Tianwen-I’s mission
A. Orbiting around Mars. B. Roving on Mars.
C. Bring back samples from Mars. D. Soft landing onto Mars.

Curling(冰壶)is a winter sport played on ice. Therefore, it’s most popular in northern countries like Canada. Curling is played in the USA by about 15,000 people. 36 Scottish winters were long and there were forms of entertainment. So people began making a sport out of sliding heavy stones on the frozen lakes. The game spread, and in the 1700s curling clubs formed. Then Scottish soldiers brought it to North America.
37 Men, women, and children often compete on the same team, if they can slide a forty-pound stone down the ice! Both teams slide their stones toward the same goal. After all 16 stones have been cast, the team whose stone has slid closest to the goal gets one point.
38 The ice is so smooth and the stone is so heavy that even the smallest misjudgment in a throw can make the stone slide much too far or stop too suddenly. 39 Water helps the stone slide, but it can also change the stone’s path.
In curling, a broom (扫帚) is part of each player’s equipment. A good curler must know how much force to use. The player must know the exact conditions of the ice on the court.高三英语 第7页(共12页) 高三英语 第8页(共12页)
40 That may explain why the international Olympic Committee decided to make curling an Olympic sport in 1998.
A. Players compete on the court.
B. Then the play begins in the other direction.
C. Curling is played by teams of four people.
D. In other words, a good curler must be a fine athlete.
E. The rules are easy to learn, but playing the game is hard.
F. The melting of the ice makes things tough for the curlers.
G. Curling probably began in Scotland in the 1500s or earlier.

This was it.
Today was the day.
Finally, she would be able to see her again
It’d been five long years. Her university days now felt like a lifetime ago. When Jennifer thought back to it, she didn’t like the girl she had been then, but when she thought about Yui Fay, that discomfort disappeared and her whole life lit up.
She couldn’t be more excited. She kept imagining their meeting—how they would run towards each other, hugging and talking of the old times. As she imagined, happiness spread through her body.
It was time to get dressed. As she was struggling about what to wear, she spotted a red summer dress, which she wore that night in Barcelona. She would never forget that night five years before. After a hard week at university, Yui Fay and she spontaneously (心血来潮地) bought bus tickets to Barcelona. They slept on the bus and then spent the whole day exploring the city. In the evening, they met these fun young guys and spent the whole night singing and dancing. Every day with Yui Fay wa fun.
After university Yui Fay went back to China where she took over her family’s business, while Jennifer took the job in an office. They promised to keep in contact. But then life happened. The occasional calls faded with time and they had not talked for over two years. Yet, of all her friends, Yui Fay was still the one she felt the closest to. She knew all her fears, dreams, and her wildest stories. She knew that if something happened, Yui Fay would be there for her no matter what. And vice versa. Some friendships just survive the passage of time.
Yet the idea of meeting her was also terrifying. What if... The idea was too hard to put into words. What if the person she was so fond of was no longer What if this dinner tuned out to be nothing more than a meeting between two boring businesswomen
At that moment, her cellphone rang.

Jennifer took up her phone and looked at the screen.______________________________
