The chasm (鸿沟) separating Garang Piol from his dream of attending Cape Town University, the top university of Africa, in 2018 was wide. The former soldier from the Republic of South Sudan needed money to pay tuition.
In the years after the war’s ending in 2005, he had worked as an electrician in a school where he found a chance at education. Later, he worked for Atlanta’s Carter Center in South Sudan, helping root out Guinea worm disease. His salary paid for his living expenses and for his education at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Kenya, where he earned a degree in sustainable development.
David Stobbelaar was in charge of the Carter Center in South Sudan in 2008 when Garang was assigned to his team. Stobbelaar says Garang impressed Carter Center staff with his intelligence, organization and communication abilities. The two became good friends over years and Garang told Stobbelaar his experience of being a soldier.
When Stobbelaar was talking in 2015 to Dickstein Hughes, a friend who is a teacher, she was leading her 10th grade English class through a book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Soldier. “I was talking to David about some of my concerns and bringing my students closer to the humanity of the memoir, and he suggested that he could connect me with a former soldier,” she said.
Garang soon was answering questions via Internet from the students. His talk was so impactful that Dickstein Hughes continued contacting him for the next three years, became Garang’s friend and came to know of his hopes of coming to Cape Town University for more schooling. Recommended by Dickstein Hughes, Garang was accepted at Cape Town, but the money became the sticking point. Thus Dickstein Hughes and her class started a GoFundMe account, went door to door and held fundraisers. “Life has challenged him time and time again, and Garang has proved himself time and time again.” Dickstein Hughes said.
Now Garang is one year into earning master’s degrees at Cape Town in international development and public health. He is anxious to return home and recreate the process that changed him. “I hope to change the life of others ─ to help them know they have a future,” Garang said.

The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its wooden roof have been largely damaged. The terrible accident causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world, “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.”
But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely via a video game called Assassin's Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before the fire. In addition, with VR technology, which is already quite mature, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage (建筑文化遗产).
The idea of digitizing ancient buildings, making digital models of them so their data can be saved, dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with hundreds of images, as well as measuring (测量) everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as “same” as the real one.
As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital replica or digital copy has great pratical value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics (文物) without touching them, which helps protect them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting it in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics. Even if the original ones are damaged one day, people can still know what they were like and can build a replica if desired.
Time is the biggest problem to architectural heritage. Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural cultural heritage at the moment.
28.What can we see about Notre Dame in the video game
A.The big fire. B.Its original look.
C.The damaged parts. D.Its wooden shape.
29.What will engineers do to create a digital replica of the ancient buildings
A.Improve the technology needed. B.Build 3D models of full size.
C.Scan the photos of the buildings. D.Measure all the parts precisely.
30.How does the author prove the digital copy has great practical value
A.By comparison. B.By listing data.
C.By giving examples. D.By classification.
31.What is the best title of the passage
A.The Damage of Notre Dame
B.The Value of Digital Replica
C.VR Technology Helps Repair the Cultural Relics
D.Digital Technology Helps Protect Ancient Buildings

We’re loving the sea to death. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine about living under the sea. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail, because we’ve not been thinking about design of structures with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night contuse species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.
Johnson, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” — the marine version of the “green engineering” movement on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.
Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbors around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life.
It’s a far cry from the days when huge numbers of old tyres were thrown into the sea to build “artificial reefs”. Those early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.
32.What do we know about “hard engineering”
A.It has improved sea environment. B.It controls the influence of sea well.
C.It has failed to achieve its purpose. D.It makes living under the sea possible.
33.What does the underlined word “contuse” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Injure. B.Heat. C.Defend. D.Involve.
34.Which of the following is a form of “blue engineering”
A.Growing plant life on concrete buildings. B.Building rocky shores with 3D printers.
C.Creating an artificial reef with old tyres. D.Building structures benefiting sea creatures.
35.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.Two ways of sea engineering. B.The green engineering movement.
C.Construction of artificial reefs. D.Research on blue engineering.
