名词性从句
表语从句的定义
定义:表语从句(Predicative Clause)就是用一个句子作为表语。
表语一般由名词、形容词或相当于名词或 形容词的词或短语充当,和连系动词一起构成谓语。
引导表语从句的词有从属连词that,whether ,as though (if);关系代词 who, what, which, whom, whose, whatever, whoever, whomever, whichever 等;关系副词 when, where, why, how, however, whenever, wherever 等 。

例如:
The problem is puzzling.
这个问题令人困惑。
主语+连系动词+形容词作表语
The problem is when we can get a pay rise.
问题是什么时候我们可以得到加薪。
主语+连系动词+句子作表语(表语从句)
She has remained there for an hour.
她曾在那里停留了一个小时。
She has remained where I stood yesterday for an hour.
她一直在我昨天站的地方站了一个小时。
His suggestion is that we should stay calm.
他的建议是,我们应该保持冷静。
The question is when he can arrive at the hotel.
问题是,他什么时候可以到达酒店。
The problem is how we can get the things we need. (how 在表语从句中充当方式状语)
问题是我们怎样能弄到我们需要的东西。
这些词大概有:变得:become, get, turn, grow; 保持:keep, hold, stay, stand; 仍然:remain.
这样加起来,常见的连系动词就有二十一个了。
常见的系动词有三种类型:
一、be动词
基本包括五个:am, is, are, was, were.
二、感官动词
即表示感觉的一些动词,一般可以翻译成“……起来”,这些词大概有:look, sound, smell, taste, feel, seem, appear; 分别表示:“看起来”、“听起来”、“闻起来”、“尝起来”、“摸起来/感觉起来”、“感觉似乎”、“显得似乎”。
三、表示“变与不变”类的词
that 仅起连接作用,无意义,在句中不作任何成分,
通常不能省略。其基本结构为“主语+连系动词+that从句” 。
例如:
What I told him was that I would find him a good play.
我告诉他的是我会给他找个好剧本。(what在主语从句中作直
接宾语, that作为表语从句的引导词在该表语从句中不充当句
子成分, 不能省略)
His suggestion is that we should stay calm.
他的建议是,我们应该保持冷静。

that 引导的表语从句,that在表语从句中不可以省掉
It seems that everything goes on well.
似乎一切都进展顺利。
One idea is that fish is the best brain food.
有一种看法认为鱼是最好的补脑食品
(1) whether 引导的表语从句:
连接词whether起连接作用,意为“是否,究竟,到底”
(注意:if 不能引导表语从句),在句中不作任何成分。
引导宾语从句时可以互换if/whether 位于介词后要用whether,
引导表语从句,主语从句,同位语从句时要用whether。
False: The question is if the enemy is marching towards us.
Right: The question is whether the enemy is marching towards us.

wh- 引导的表语从句
(2) 连接代词引导的表语从句:
连接代词what, which, who, whom, whose等除了在句中起连
接作用外,还在从句中充当主语、宾语、 表语、定语等,且各
有各的词义。
The question is which of us should go.
问题是我们哪一个应该去。
The problem was who could do the work.
问题是谁能做这项工作。
That is what he really wants.那就是他真想要的东西。
That’s what we should do.那是我们应该做的。

wh- 引导的表语从句
(3) 连接副词引导的表语从句:
连接副词when, where, how, why等除了在句中起连接作用外
还在从句中充当时间、地点、方式、原因状语,本身具有词义。
My question is how information is stored in the long-term
memory.我的问题是信息是怎样储存 在长期记忆中的。
Go and get your coat. It’s where you left it.去把外套拿来。就在
你原来放的地方。
I had neither a raincoat nor an umbrella. That's why I got wet
through.我们既没伞也没雨衣, 这是我们淋湿的原因。
That is how mice ruin many stores of grain every year.那就是老
鼠是怎样每年损害大量粮 食的。

wh- 引导的表语从句
(1) because引导的表语从句:because引导表语从句通常用于“This/That/It is/was because…”结构中。
(2) as if/though引导的表语从句:常置于感官系动词look, seem, sound等后面,常用虚拟语气,表示不大可能存在的动作或状态。
It looked as if it was going to snow.看起来好像要下雪了。
That's because we never thought of it.
这是因为我们从未想过此事。
It seems as if he didn't know the answer.好像他不知道答案。

其他连词(词组)引导的表语从句
1. 在引导表语从句时,whether不能被if替换。
2. 当主句的主语是表示建议、命令、要求等的名词
时,那么表语从句应该用虚拟语气,即谓语动词
用“should + 动词原形”,should可省略。例如:
His suggestion is that we (should) climb all the way to the top of the hill.
他的建议是我们一路爬到山顶。

表语从句中要注意的几个问题
3. 在句型 “The reason (why)… is that…”中,that引
导表语从句,此处的that不能换成because;
而在句型 “It/This/That is/was because…”的表语从
句中,because也不能替换成that.
The reason why he was so late is that it was raining hard then.
他来这么晚是因为那时正下着大雨。
It is because you eat too much.
是因为你吃得太多了。

表语从句中要注意的几个问题
He did not see the film last night. That is because he had to help his little sister with her homework.昨天晚上他没有去看电影, 那是因为他得帮助他的妹妹做作业。(第一句话说明结果, 第二句话说明原因)
He had seen the film before. That is why he did not see it last night.他以前曾看过那部电影, 因此他昨天晚上没有去看。(第一句话说明原因, 第二句话说明结果)
