Arthur was messy. He didn’t try to make messes, neither did he try to clean up much. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. He was reading a comic book and he was still reading, saying nothing. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that. Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks ” Arthur called.
“There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt !”

Teaching can be a demanding profession. There are plenty of studies and educational strategies for improving students' behavior. But a personal experience may be the best way to show how to turn a difficult student into a focused pupil. Jessica is a very qualified teacher, but she had such an experience: one where she was able to help change a student with major behavioral issues into a learning success story.
Tyler was enrolled in Jessica's senior class for a semester. He had impulse-control and anger-management issues. He had been suspended (停学) many times in previous years. When he entered Jessica's class in his senior year, Jessica assumed the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Jessica never created a seating chart for students on the first day, which was always her opportunity to get to know her pupils before assigning them to specific seats after a few weeks. Every time she talked at the front of the class, she would ask students questions, calling them by name. Doing this helped her to get to know them and learn their names. Unfortunately, every time Jessica called Tyler's name, he would respond with a glib (未经思考的) answer. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
Jessica can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least motivate them to sit quietly and attentively. By contrast, Tyler was just loud and unpleasant.
Jessica had rarely found suspension to be effective because students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking while Jessica was teaching. In the middle of the lesson, she said in the same tone of voice, "Tyler, why don't you join our discussion instead of having one of your own " With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. Jessica sent Tyler to the office, and he received a week-long out-of-school suspension.
To this point, this was one of Jessica's worst teaching experiences. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and she dreaded Tyler's return.

Henry got on his bike and began to deliver copies of the March 8,1970, issue of The Gazette. Half an hour later, he threw the last newspaper onto the porch(门廊)at 35 Oak Street and cycled to The Gazette offices. There must be something important for the editor in chief to meet with an 11-year-old paperboy.
"No good way to deliver bad news," Mr. Trotta greeted him when Henry stepped in. Henry's smile faded.
"We're closing shop, Henry. Advertising is down. Television is how people get their news today. Local papers are the first to close."Mr. Trotta shrugged.
Henry couldn’t believe his ears, frozen to the spot. He thought of all hose people he had met on his route. They wouldn't get their neighborhood news anymore!
"You were great, Henry—always dependable" Mr. Trotta said. Henry forced his head up to say good-bye.
As he rode past the houses he knew so well he saw Mr. Grady on his porch, holding a broom(扫帚). Henry led him to a chair and cleaned the porch. They sat for a while as Mr. Grady recalled how happy he'd been moving his family to 10 Oak. He sounded lonely.
A week after his last deliveries, Henry wondered if his customers missed The Gazette as much as he did. He thought of a way to find out. He started out on his old route with a notebook.
Henry stopped at Mrs. Burke's. She opened the door, holding the two babies. She asked him if he knew any neighbors with experience of looking after children.
Mr. Simon was next door, carrying his violin out. "Hey, Henry. My band is having a concert in the park his Friday. Tell all your friends."
As Henry made more notes, an idea started forming in his head. Maybe he could create a newsy page (小报) for the neighbors.

Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet.
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations, son,” his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was soaking wet.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite ice cream flavor. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate mint chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he’d win again.
He’s taken first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. As it turned out, Mike decided to have some mint chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but all that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s build.
It didn’t take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place – and then third – and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, we all love ice cream, but it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it’s time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.”
Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didn’t perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.

Grandpa Cecil Rodgers has narrowly escaped a phone scam(欺骗). It all began with a telephone call...
Cecil is an elderly man from Cincinnati, Ohio, who was looking forward to spending time with his family over the holidays. They were all coming to visit him at his Elmwood Place home, including his adult grandson David. One afternoon, while napping in bed, he was awakened by the sharp ringing of his telephone.
“Who will ring me up at this time ” He wondered. Peering towards the phone, he hesitantly picked it up. From the receiver came an urgent voice. “Grandpa, this is David. I am in trouble.” Before Cecil could ask him any question, he continued, on and off, half crying, “I hit a woman’s car and she was seven months pregnant. And they charged me with drunken driving and I’m in prison...” He sobbed loudly. His voice was so broken that Cecil could hardly match it with the gentle and warm voice of his grandson. Poor David! He must be suffering! Cecil panicked immediately.
Without more detailed communication, the phone passed suddenly to another person — David’s lawyer who had a deeper voice. Seemingly, he understood Cecil’s anxiety and attempted to comfort him with a solution. “Now the only way to help David is to go to Wal-Mart and transfer $2,300 to another store. I would pick up the money and then use it to post David’s bail(保释金).”“I am sure everything would be OK as long as the money is in place,” he added. Ultimately, he lowered his voice, “Don’t tell anybody. You don’t want to make your grandson look ugly in your neighborhood.” The lawyer hung up even before Cecil could give an answer.

答案以及解析
1.答案:
Para 1:
He turned mom for help, however, Mom was still reading and said nothing. Seeing his mother’s response, he burst into anger. “why are you so cold!” he shouted. But mom just closed the book, staring at him, stating calmly, “all of your pain results from your bad habits.” Furious but weak in words, Arthur turned back sharply and stepped upstairs with lame legs. Arthur came to realize it was he that could solve the problem by himself. Tears of regret filling the eyes, he quietly picked up the toy train and put it in the box.
Para2:
Having put away the toy train, he caught sight of the dirty socks. It suddenly struck him that it was also his duty to do the washing himself. Having collected the socks, he sank them in water, then gazing at them without knowing what to do. Just as he was scratching his head, mom came over and told him how to wash them softly. His face lighting up, Arthur sprang up into his mom’s warm hug. Stroking Arthur’s hair, Mom smiled with satisfaction for his getting rid of the bad habit.

On the day of Tyler's return, Jessica stood at the door waiting for him. As soon as she saw him, she asked Tyler to talk to her for moment. Tyler seemed unhappy to do it but agreed. Jessica told him that she wanted to start over with him. She also told him that if he felt like he was going to lose control in class, he had her permission to step outside the door for a moment to collect himself. Hearing Jessica's words, Tyler was touched and he was about to cry, because he was expecting a severe scolding or total ignorance.
From that point on, Tyler was a changed student. He listened carefully and tried to participate in class. He was a smart student, something Jessica could finally witness in him. He even stopped a fight between two of his classmates one day. He never abused his break time privilege. Giving Tyler permission to leave the classroom showed him that he had the ability to choose how he would behave. This is Jessica's best teaching experience.

It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn’t sure what to expect. He’d been training hard with his dad, and staying away from the rich desserts he enjoyed so much. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool. As he dove into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could. This race was a long one with several laps, so Mike tried to keep his energy level up even as he began feeling tired.
