1. The McDonnells lived in a small brick house in Larchmont, a suburb of New York City. Jim was foreman of mail carriers at the post office where he had worked for 25 years. Married in 1960, he and Anne were childless.
On the evening of the eleventh anniversary of their marriage, carrying out the garbage, Jim McDonnell slipped on icy steps, and struck his head. A few days later, driving to work, he lost control of the car, hit a telephone pole, and banged his forehead against the windshield. The following day he fell off the stairs, and again he banged his head. Found unconscious, he was hospitalized for three days with a cerebral concussion(脑震荡). One day in the same month, Jim borrowed a friend’s station wagon and drove to Kennedy Airport to pick up Anne’s brother and family. When he returned the borrowed car at 10 p.m., he was unaware that the wallet containing his identification had slipped out of his pocket onto the floor of the car. After that, he was never seen again.
So what really happened to Anne’s husband During his walk home, Jim had indeed blacked out(昏厥), losing all ability to remember who he was and where he lived. What happened then is unclear. The next thing he knew was that he was in downtown Philadelphia, a city he had never visited before. Seeing signs advertising the services of a James Peters, a real estate broker, Jim adopted James Peters as his own name. He had no past; his only reality was the present. James Peters got a Social Security card, which could be obtained at that time without showing a birth certificate, and took a job in a health club. He next worked at a cancer research institute, cleaning out animal cages. He also got a night-shift job at the P&P luncheonette, where he became well known for his omelets(煎蛋卷), as well as his kindness and good humor.

Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal ” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then— bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot (鼻涕)frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help him. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done.

Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper(洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs(碎屑)into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning. “You know what, Arthur I'm not going to ask you again. I'm done cleaning today.” And with that. Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom's spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn't like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. "Mom, where are my socks " Arthur called.
"There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt!”

From the first day that I brought Juan Salvador, a penguin I saved on a beach in Uruguay, to live at St. George's, one student in particular wanted to help with his care. That boy's name was Diego Gonzales. The shy 13-year-old Bolivian boy wasn't academically gifted. None of St. George's extracurricular activities seemed to suit him either. In addition, Diego's knowledge of English was limited, so he tended to avoid conversation. But the saddest part was the homesickness he suffered. It came as no surprise that the boy spent much time with Juan Salvador and the penguin liked him.
I'd been thinking of letting Juan Salvador swim in the school's outdoor pool, but there was never an occasion. Months later, this particular evening finally came. Diego and I brought Juan Salvador to the pool. He surveyed the water curiously. "Go on!" I said, signaling him to dive. "It's all right. You can swim!" Juan Salvador looked at the water, and then at me as if to ask, "Ah! Is this where the fish come from " Without further encouragement, he dived. He flew like an arrow across the water and hit the wall on the opposite side. There was a sharp intake of breath from Diego. Juan Salvador rose to the surface spluttering(发噗噗声).
After a moment, he gave an energetic shake and ducked again. He flew from one end to the other, doing dramatic turns. Juan Salvador finally found the freedom to express his nature, "Look at him!" Diego shouted. Then he asked me quietly, "Can I swim with him " "What And it's 'May I swim,'" I corrected him. "Sir. May I swim Please! Five minutes only."
I was shocked. I never knew Diego wanted to do anything, apart from tending Juan Salvador and avoiding others. "But the water is cold. Are you sure you want to go in " "Please!" Diego begged. "All right, but be quick!" I said, suspecting he'd sink like a stone. Diego's eyes were shining. He ran to the dorm to get changed and reappeared in no time.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
"I wish you could see him," she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. "He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do."
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. "I wish we could help him to earn money," said Clara. "His family is suffering so much."
"So do I," said Harry. "We really should do something to assist them."
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, "I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成)."
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. "I tell you what we can do," said John. 答案以及解析
1.答案:
About a month before Christmas 1985, colleagues noticed that Jim had grown unusually quiet and depressed. Something seemed to be turning in his mind. On December 22, Jim had fallen and banged his head. The next day at work he seemed distracted, and late that afternoon he had fallen again, striking his head. On December 24, he awoke feeling confused, yet delighted. After almost 15 years, he knew who he was! He was James A. McDonnell, Jr., of Larchmont, New York. His wife’s name was Anne.
Anne had just returned home from Christmas Mass, where she lit candles and prayed for Jim. A light snow was falling, and she was in a hurry to leave for Christmas dinner at her sister’s before the roads grew slick. Then the doorbell rang. "Oh my," she thought, "this is not a good time for a visitor." Anne opened the door—and saw a man with a full white beard. Immediately she recognized Jim. She couldn’t speak.
To Jim, Anne looked a little older, but prettier too. His heart overflowed.
"Hello, Anne," he said.
2.答案:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt ” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was a matter of a few spoonfuls of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I am doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and we always have the opportunity to be a blessing to someone else.

第3步:根据关键要点,确定关键词,如: 求助call for help,解决难题solve the problem,捡起pick up,照顾take care of等。
第4步:连句成文,注意使用恰当的连接词,如however, then, and now等,进行句子之间的衔接与过渡,使之自然流畅。

Without hesitation, he dived into the water. I was prepared to jump in and rescue him. But for the second time, I was astonished. Not only could Diego but he swam swim, magnificently! He chased after Juan Salvador, treading water skillfully. Moments later, Diego led; the penguin swam behind him. I'd never seen such interaction, which highlighted each of their skills. I also found Diego's true nature—a very normal boy with a very special talent(点明主题). After five minutes as promised, Diego swam to the edge. In one graceful movement, he sprang out, Juan Salvador following(独立主语结构).
"Diego! You swim really well! Brilliantly, in fact!" I said excitedly while handing him a towel. "You think so " he asked, not looking directly at me, but I saw just a smile on his face(人物描写生动真实)—the first, I believe, that was on his lips since he'd arrived at school. As we returned to the dorm, Diego told me that his father had taught him to swim in Bolivia. He also spoke freely about other things he enjoyed at home. I listened carefully as he talked nonstop back to the house, without correcting his English(呼应文章), just enjoying the pleasant night for both of us.
5.答案:
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too. "What a wonderful plan! I will give you a hand!" she said, with a bright smile spreading across her face. Soon they hurried to see Bernard and told him the plan excitedly. Hearing that, Bernard jumped wildly with joy. Then the four kids took out a big box of corn sent by Uncle John. Mrs. Meredith took the lead to make paper bags. John and Bernard were busy in popping the corn while Harry and Clara put the popcorn into each bag. Every one was fully devoted to their jobs. Soon, all the paper bags were full of hot, sweet popcorn and the delicious smell filled the air in the yard.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He visited his neighbors from door to door to sell his popcorn. In spite of struggling to make ends meet, people in the community were willing to buy some popcorn to support Bernard's small business. For weeks, the quiet neighborhood turned into hustle and bustle, as long as the children doing their popcorn business. Through everyone's effort, the situation in Bernard's family gradually turned around. The Meredith family's love, through the sweet aroma of popcorn, floated all around the community.
