Exhausted Finns (芬兰人) in the western city of Turku can now escape pressures at home or stress at work at a café where people can catnap (打盹儿).
The idea of Turku’s new “nap” café is from Jeremy Mast, a Frenchman who has been living in Finland since 2006 and was searching for a place to rest several years ago.
“The idea came to me in a restaurant when I felt a bit sleepy after a meal,” he said. “I thought it would be so nice to have a place for resting and I started to think what it could be like.”
After finding people liked his idea, Mast opened the Naphouse in January, 2009 with the support of the European Union’s youth culture budget. The café is also used as an art gallery and an activity workshop for young people.
People are given slippers, a pillow, a blanket (毯子) and even a teddy bear before entering the blue-coloured nap room.
“A lot of different kinds of people come here: students, working people and a lot of mothers with babies,” Mast said, adding that his customers often sleep there for about an hour and a half.
Customers can use the service for free, but some choose to make a donation to the Naphouse.
Now that he runs the Naphouse, however, Mast says he does not always have time to have a nap during the day.
