伟大的文学只不过是在最大程度上承载意义的语言
Welcome to the unit
My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been thoroughly in earnest.
——David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens
Welcome to the unit
You can never have too much sky. You can fall asleep and wake up drunk on sky, and sky can keep you safe when you are sad. Here there is too much sadness and not enough sky. Butterflies too are few and so are flowers and most things that are beautiful. Still, we take what we can get and make the best of it.
——The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros
Welcome to the unit
David Copperfield and The House on Mango Street are distinctively two types of books. However, these two excerpts both express a positive outlook in the face of adversity.
My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been thoroughly in earnest.

It shows the main character’s passion for whatever he is doing.
It introduces the concept of making full use of what we have now

But which of the exerpts makes you feel like reading the whole book
Why
What qualities do you think a great work of literature should have
Pre-reading
Fast reading(within 3 minutes)
1. What does the man stand for
The man stands for a teacher or mentor[ ment ] who leads others into the world of literature.
2. What does the child stand for
The child stands for people who try to explore the wonder of literature.
Detailed reading
Read paras. 1-2 and answer the questions.
3. How is the story of the child and the man related to the second paragraph by the writer
By using the sentence “Some such experience as this lies in store for us when we begin the study of literature.” to transit from the previous
paragraph to the next smoothly.
Detailed reading
Read paras. 1-2 and answer the questions.
Read paras. 3–5 and finish the chart.
Its description of
truth and beauty
Its appeal to our
feelings and imagination
Universal interest
Personal style
Detailed reading
The first quality of literature is its description of truth and beauty. Some truth and beauty remain unnoticed until a sensitive human soul brings them to our attention, just as the shell reflects the unnoticed sounds. A hundred men may pass a field and see only dead grass; but a poet stops, looks deeper, sees truth and beauty, and writes, “Yesterday’s flowers am I.” One who reads it is capable of seeing the beauty that was hidden from his eyes before.

One more example:
With the rise and fall of Jia, Shi, Wang, Xue as the background, and from the perspective of Jia Baoyu, the rich prince, Dream of The Red Mansions depicts
a group of life patterns of boundoir ladies whose manners and insights are above the eyebrows, and shows the true beauty of humanity and tragedy. It can be said that it is an epic that represents the beauty of women from all angles.
The second quality of literature is its appeal to our feelings and imagination. Its attraction lies more in what it awakens in us than what it says. When Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus asks in the presence of Helen, “Was this the face that launched a thousand ships ” he opens a door through which our imagination enters a new world, a world of love, beauty and heroism.

One more example:
1.In this busy, dusty world, having accomplished nothing, I suddenly recalled all the girls I had known, considering each in turn, and it dawned on me that all of them surpassed me in behavior and understanding; that I, shameful to say, for all my masculine dignity, fell short of the gentler sex. But since this could never be remedied, it was no use regretting it. There was really nothing to be done.
2. And he says the strangest things for a child. Girls are made of water, men of mud, he declares. When I see girls I feel refreshed, but I feel turbid when seeing men.
This novel was an attack on
the feudal society in which
men were superior to women.
All of the information could
be represented through what
Jia Baoyu said and did. He refused to take part in the imperial examinations as planned, and he liked staying with girls rather than men.
The third quality of literature, coming out of the other two, is its permanence. To achieve this, it should contain two elements: universal interest and personal style. Good literature reflects the most basic of human nature—love and hate, joy and sadness, fear and hope. It also takes on a personal style—no writer can describe human life without reflecting his own life and experiences.

Born in a rich and official family, Cao Xueqin used to live an extravagant and luxurious life. However, his father was involved in a political struggle within the ruling class during the reign of the Qing Emperor Yongzheng, so his family suffered a heavy blow both politically and financially. Thereafter, his family declined gradually.
