The analysis of the text
The theme of this passage “Body language” is “Human and Society”. “Body language” is included in 8BM1 Social communication. The passage tells a story about using body language in communication, and is mainly made up of conversations between the characters Debbie, Simon and Mr Yang. Debbin and Simon are both students who have part-time jobs at a travel company of which Mr Yang is in charge. Simon wants to find out why customers usually ask Debbie for help instead of him, and Mr Yang tells him the reason lies in his poor body language. In the end, Simon realizes the importance of body language, makes some change in his body language and makes a good impression.
The analysis of the students
After a year of studying in middle schools, most Grade 8 students have acquired a lot of basic English expressions. At the age of around 14, Grade 8 students are curious about everything in the world, so they will be interested in the topic of body language and wonders what body language is and how to use it in their daily lives. However, lacking social experiences, students may find it hard to understand why body language plays such a significant role in daily communication.

Pre-reading
Step 1 The teacher plays a video about workers using body language to complain about their heavy work and little pay. The students watch the video and guess what is happening in the story. To arouse the students’ interest in body language and how it communicates things.
Step 2 The teacher shows the students three pictures of different people using body language to communicate things. The students look at the pictures and guess what the people in the pictures are saying. The teacher summarizes what body language is. To focus on the definition of body language. After guessing the meaning behind deiffernet kinds of body language, the students can better understand what body language is.
While-reading
Step 3 The students look at the photo, the title and the introduction to the story, and then answer the questions below: What does the story take place Who are the main characters in the story What are they talking about To develop the reading skills of skimming, and help students quickly get the gist of the story.
Step 4 The students listen to the story, scan the article and put the sentences into the correct order. To develop the reading skills of scanning, and find out the logical line behind the story.
Step 5 The students read the conversation part and identify the speakers. To help students learn the strategy of “identifying the speaker” by paying attention to the quotation marks.
Step 6 The students read the passage again and complete the table about body language and its impression on people. To lead the students to analyze the influence of body language.
After reading
Step 7 The teacher shares a quiz about different components of communication and guide the students to notice the importance of body language in communication. The students does the quiz and thinks about why body language is important. To guide students to pay notice that communication is more than just speaking.
Step 8 The students complete the self-assessment table and summarize what they have learned in this class.
Homework
Please search for information online to find out more ways of communicating in our daily lives. Please observe your family members and think about what their body languages are saying about them.
