Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortage of type O blood.Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
There are four main kinds of blood. Most people born with one of these four: Type A,Type B, Type AB or Type O.Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood.
Type O is the most common blood group. But the supplies of it available in hospitals and blood banks are usually limited. This is because of the high demand for it.Type O blood is used in emergencies when there is no time to identify the patient's blood type.
Giving A,B or AB to someone with a different blood type, including O,can cause a bad reaction by the person's defense system.Their immune system can reject the blood. This immune reaction can be deadly.
The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules (分子).These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens (抗原).These antigens are found with type A, B and AB blood but not with type O.
More than twenty five years ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universal type cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes (酶).But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change.
Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements and is not too costly,it could become a widely used life saving tool to increase the supply of universal blood.
4.How do scientists deal with the problem of lacking type O blood
A.Hope more people to donate type O blood.
B.Make the most of the present type O blood.
C.Develop new ways of using type O blood.
D.Make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
5.What make people have different kinds of blood
A.Sugar molecules in red blood cells.
B.People's different living conditions.
C.People's various immune systems.
D.The variety of people's cells and genes.
6.What can we infer from the passage
A.Type O blood can be safely given to anyone.
B.Antigens could easily be removed to create universal blood.
C.A Danish company wanted to involve itself in studying blood.
D.The new method is not safe enough to be put into use in hospitals now.
7.What is the best title for the passage
A.Four Different Kinds of Blood
B.A New Way to Make Type O Blood
C.The Latest Research on Blood Type
D.Find the Proper Type of Blood

I always wanted to be a firefighter. It seemed exciting to me.I like to be outside, lift heavy things and sleep on the ground!
In college,I got a job with the forest service. My first week on the job, they asked if I wanted to get my red card (training for forest fires). I said yes!
The training was a week long.I learned about the different types of fire crews (工作人员) and I remember the instructor saying hotshots were the top dogs.He said they had the most difficult and dangerous job and that you had to really prove yourself in order to be a hotshot.I was sold.I didn't want to do anything else!
However, hotshot crews don't hire people without fire experience.I returned home from training to Logan where the Logan Hotshots are based.I walked in and told the boss I wanted to be a hotshot and they should keep me in mind if they needed anyone.
The very next day I got a note saying the Hotshots were looking for me!A woman on their crew got injured and they needed a replacement...they were headed to a fire that day. They thought of me because I had just been there the day before.
We arrived at the fire near Provo,Utah at about 10 p.m. that night. We ended up working 40 hours, digging fire lines.I thought I felt asleep standing up against my tool at one point.
My feet were covered in blisters (水泡) and the helicopter that was supposed to pick us up at the top of the mountain broke down and we had to walk miles!
To my delight, the crew liked me and hired me after that.I also met my husband that night! How cool is that!

As the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” That's because this healthy food choice is supposed to be full of nutrients. The apple at the supermarket, though, might be so old that it has lost many of its nutrients. But soon there might be a way to check the quality of fruit by scanning it.
Scientists at Food+Future coLAB have come up with the idea of a handheld spectrometer (分光仪) that scans food. The machine will work by shining infrared (红外线的) light on a piece of produce.By measuring how chemicals in the fruit or vegetable take in the light, the scanner can recognise the food's chemical makeup.
“The machine can tell you exactly how old an apple is, how many calories it contains, what nutrients are present inside it, and even small differences in taste,” Greg Shewmaker of Food+Future coLAB recently said.
For the new machine to be useful to consumers, researchers first need to create a database that contains possible chemicals for a particular type of fruit, like an apple, for example.Scientists will need to scan lots of pieces of produce to collect this data. The information collected will allow the scanners to tell customers the quality of fruit.
Once consumers know what's inside an apple, they can decide if they want to buy it.Knowing fruit quality may also affect how a store prices produce.“We can price produce based on the nutritional value,” Shewmaker explained.
Food+Future coLAB has already created a working model of its machine. It says you may see one in your local supermarket within the next few years. Then deciding whether you've picked the healthiest fruit will be just a quick scan.
12.Why does the author mention the saying about apple at the beginning
A.To prove that the apple is full of nutrients.
B.To introduce the topic of the fruit scanner.
C.To advise people to keep healthy by eating apples.
D.To state that the apple is the tastiest among fruits.
13.What do we know about the spectrometer
A.It is powered by infrared light.
B.It is not useful in many customers' eyes.
C.It can help customers decide which fruit to buy.
D.It can improve the quality of fruit and vegetables.
14.According to Shewmaker, what's a spectrometer's influence on a store
A.It makes a store more attractive.
B.It provides price reference (参考) for produce.
C.It enriches customers' knowledge about food nutrition.
D.It creates a database about the chemical makeup of fruit.
15.What would be the best title for this passage
A.The Fruit Scanner
B.The Priced Fruit
C.How to Scan Fruits
D.How to Pick Fruits

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was doing a big clean up recently and my kids were helping when my son,Freddo, came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark brown coin inside.“Mum,can I have this Can I play with this coin?”he asked.I took one look and was immediately transported to another time.
In 1991,there was a time when my friend and I worked in a backward African country,Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place—the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there,we moved on to work at a health clinic in neighbouring country,Burkina Faso.“It's much greener in Burkina.Even the Coke tastes better,”the locals assured us.
Yet the fact was quite the opposite.Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina,we began to unload.I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness,a motorbike with two men approached slowly.Without warning, one of the men grabbed my daypack as the motorbike swept close by.Within seconds, the pair were out of sight, swallowed up by the night.
With my passport, money, traveller's cheques all in the bag,I was in deep trouble. How frustrating! All I wanted was to leave this hellhole! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one day,I was stopped by an old woman who thrust her hand in my face.“Cadeau (‘gift’in French)!Cadeau!”she cried.I'd had enough!I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and...everything!I told her angrily and firmly in French.“I have no‘cadeau’.I have no money.A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can't get out of your country.I cannot give you anything.NOTHING!”The beggar woman listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave a broad smile.

She reached into the pocket of her dress.“Then I will give you a cadeau,”she announced.Kindly, she placed an old, dark brown coin in my hand.In surprise,I looked at the coin, then at the woman. At that moment,I felt rather ashamed, ashamed of my terrible attitude towards the old woman. In spite of her poverty, she was able to give me something priceless.I had taken it for granted that beggars would only receive something from others, yet the coin from the beggar woman in Burkina truly changed my view towards them, and her smile hit the deepest of my heart.
There was a slight touch on my hand;looking down,I saw my son looking at me,curious.“Mum,can I have this Can I play with this coin?”he repeated.“You can't play with it,honey.”I touched my son on the head and said slowly,“This one is special. It is an unforgettable precious memory to e and let me tell you a story.”
