This past summer, I applied for my very first job at a small bakery in my neighborhood. I knew that if I were hired there, I would learn how to use a cash register, prepare sandwiches, and take cake orders. I imagined that my biggest struggle would be serving demanding New Yorkers, but I never thought that the act of tying a box would become both my biggest challenge and greatest teacher.
On my first day of work in late August, one of the employees quickly explained the process. It seemed simple: wrap the string(绳子)around your hand, then wrap it three times around the box both ways, and fasten it. I repeated the message in my head, "Three times, turn it. Three times, tie it." until it became my prayer. After observing several employees, it was clear that anyone tying the box could complete it in a matter of seconds. For weeks, I failed endlessly, only to watch the strong and small pieces of my pride unravel(散开)each time I tried.
As I rushed to push half-tied cake boxes into plastic bags with embarrassment, I could not help but wonder what was wrong with me. As the weeks progressed, my skills slowly began to improve. Of course, there were days when I just wanted to throw all of the string in the trash and use tape instead;this sense of defeat was never wanted, but comments like “Oh, you must be new" from impatient customers made me angry and I determined to try even harder.
Slowly I began to realize that I should not be ashamed if it takes me longer to learn. I kept on, and I continued to tie boxes every weekend at work. Even though I sometimes fell back into helplessness, I always rewrapped the string around my hand and started over because I learned that the most satisfying victories come from not giving up.

There you are in your favorite clothing store. You don't really need to buy anything, but everything is so cheap and stylish. Before you know it, you leave the store with bags and bags of new clothes.
On the surface, this doesn't seem so bad. However, there are a lot of hidden costs behind the cheap price put forward by fast fashion brands. To put it simply, the fashion industry is terrible for the planet. Not only does it use up a lot of resources, but it also heavily pollutes the environment with chemicals, microplastics and unwanted waste.
Fashion is one of the least sustainable(可持续发展的)industries on the planet, commented Michael Stanley-Jones, a program management officer with the United Nations Environment Program. “We've all become our own waste managers, hoarding fashion waste in our closets," he noted. It doesn't just take up space in our closets, though. It also ends up in wasteyard, too. In fact, three out of every five garments end up either being burned or sent to wasteyards.
But, thankfully, the fashion trend(趋势)tides are changing.
“People are increasingly examining their own consumption(消费)and what changes they can make to become sustainable," Jane Fellner, founder and CEO of sustainable fashion retailer Loopster, told the Guardian.
In particular, with its typically lower prices and rare fashion finds, shopping secondhand has become an increasingly popular and eco-friendly choice.
According to online reseller ThredUp, the secondhand market is predicted to reach $80 billion(about 518 billion yuan)by 2029. And, although fast fashion will continue to grow 20 percent over the next 10 years, secondhand fashion is expected to grow an unbelievable 185 percent in that same amount of time.
Fellner continued, "Secondhand has become more socially acceptable and, for some, cool. The act of saving is now common on TikTok.”
28. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. People's love for fast fashion. B. Reasons why fast fashion is popular.
C. The harm caused by the fashion industry. D. The way people choose clothes.
29. What does the underlined word “hoarding" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Storing. B. Destroying. C. Changing. D. Recycling.

C. It has defeated fast fashion. D. It is becoming a hit.
31. What is the best title of this passage
A. We Should Give up Fast Fashion B. Buying Cheap Clothes Should Be Stopped
C. Eco-friendly Fashion Is Gaining Popularity D. Jane Fellner Is a Fashion Insider
D
If you're one of those people who have trouble falling asleep, listen up. You might fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and wake up far less during the night if you put on a pair of socks at bedtime.
To understand why, you first need to understand the relationship between core body temperature and sleep. During daylight hours, the human body keeps at an average temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. But at night, your core body temperature reduces as much as 1.2 degrees Celsius over the course of six or seven hours of sleep.
It turns out that this gradual decrease in core body temperature is a key part of the complex neurobiological dance(神经生物学行为)of falling asleep and staying asleep. And the faster you can lower the core body temperature, the faster you will fall asleep.
One of the ways your body regulates(调节)its temperature is through blood vessels(血管)in your skin. If the brain decides the body is too hot, it will widen blood vessels, guiding warmer blood from the body's core to the rest of the body to cool it down. If the body is too cold, the brain signals the opposite reaction, limiting the flow of blood to the surface.
According to researchers, warming the feet before going to sleep promotes vasodilation(血管舒张)by using a warm foot bath or wearing socks, which in turn lowers the body's core temperature faster than going to sleep with cold, bare feet.
Scientists think socked feet may have a neurological effect as well. Inside the PO/AH of the brain is a type of a warm-sensitive neuron(热敏神经元), helping us fall asleep and stay asleep. And if that's the case, warming up the feet before bedtime gives warm-sensitive neurons an extra power.
In a small study, Korean researchers found that wearing a pair of special “sleeping socks" not only quickened sleep, but lengthened overall sleep time by an average of 30 minutes and cut nighttime waking period in half.
32. What's the relationship between core body temperature and sleep
A. Once you control your core body temperature, you'll fall asleep quickly.
B. The faster your core body temperature drops, the faster you'll fall asleep.
C. The core body temperature doesn't have anything to do with sleep.
D. The decrease of the core body temperature stops fast sleep.
33. Which of the following is the benefit of sleeping with a pair of socks
A. Lowering the body's temperature greatly. B. Reducing overall sleep time.
C. Increasing nighttime waking period. D. Speeding up your sleep.
34. What can you infer from the passage
A. People's body temperature goes up at night.
B. It must be uncomfortable to wear socks in bed.
C. A warm foot bath might be helpful before sleeping.
D. Warm-sensitive neurons have no effect on sleep.
35. How is the passage mainly developed
A. By listing numbers. B. By providing examples.
C. By making comparison. D. By giving explanations.

Four Ways to Beat the Monday Blues
For most workers and students, Monday is the toughest day, which implies that the happy weekend is over, while the new week of work and study has just begun. However, Monday always comes as usual. 36 The following four tips can help you greet the coming week full of energy.
37 Instead of focusing on the difficult tasks that lie ahead of you, you can make a list by writing down some things that you are looking forward to. A good place to start is to think of one thing you are excited about for each category: at work, after work, and at the weekend.
Sleep has a huge effect on our mood. According to Harvard Medical School, “poor sleep can cause easy anger and stress, while healthy sleep can increase well-being." So, next time if you find yourself a little more short-tempered than normal, sleep may be the answer. 38 It's worth taking this into consideration on Sunday to avoid a lack of energy on a Monday morning.
Don't underestimate(低估)the power of clothing. In fact, psychologists conclude that the strong link between clothing and mood suggests we should put on clothes that we associate with happiness, even when feeling low. 39
Keep Monday's schedule a little lighter than other days. After a weekend of fun, don't give yourself a too tight schedule, please take it easy. 40 It means putting some time into the easier tasks. Putting less pressure on yourself is a good way to beat the Monday Blues.
A. Just do small and easy things. B. Think about all the good to come. C. Since you can't escape, you'd better face it bravely! D. This doesn't mean sitting around and being lost in your blues. E. Reduce Monday Blues by allowing yourself to do everything with more ease. F. In short, nothing is better than wearing what makes you feel great on Monday! G. Take a nap to energize or get to bed earlier tonight to make up for lost sleep.
