Reading material: A Friendly Dolphin
Way of lesson delivering: Recorded lecture
Teaching aim:
To guide students to dig into the story of a dolphin saving a boy in the sea: vocabulary and comprehension;
To generate discussions about swimming safety and raise students’ awareness of wild animal protection.
Teaching Procedure:
Step 1 Class preparation
Get students prepared for the lesson and introduce the learning objectives.
Step 2 Lead- in
Begin with the question” What animals can be humans’ friends ”. Display pictures of possible animals on the PowerPoint slide;
Have students read statements about dolphins and tell whether they are true or false.
Step 3 Before reading
Have students look closely at the pictures about the story and tell what they can see;
Encourage students to predict what might happen in the story according to the given pictures.
Step 4 While reading:
Read for new words-
Invite students to skim the story and underline or highlight new words or phrases;
Show students selected words and phrases based on the average language level of their age group;
Articulate the words and further explain with definitions, images and sentence examples.

Ask students to scan the story to respond to the comprehension questions regarding more details.
Read for recounting-
After the last reading, present students scrambled pictures of the story and they are supposed to put those pieces back to the correct order;
Challenge students to detect those subtle mistakes in the report of the story.
Step 5 Post reading:
Make connections between the story and real life.
Bring up the questions to students: Who should be blamed for the boy’s dangerous situation Could it be his own fault by ignoring certain warnings around the sea area where he was swimming As students, what caution reminders should we pay attention to while having fun at the beach or in the sea
Inspire students to think of more words to describe the dolphin in the story- intelligent, calm in danger and caring;
Generate discussion about how to protect wild animals and play a video to show students’ views towards the topic;
Suggest practical ways to protect wild animals and share a quote from Emma Watson.
