Lose Yourself in a Good Book for Australia Reads
In November, we're inviting Australians of all ages and from all walks of life to share and celebrate the joys of reading. Whether you're picking up a book for the first time or your head is already stuck in one, there are plenty of books, activities and events as parts of our festivities.
On Thursday, November 12, we'll celebrate Australian Reading Hour. You’re invited to stop what you're doing for an hour, pick up a book and read to yourself or the children in your life. Join us and relax. Get inspired and find joy in books!
This year we are hosting three online events to celebrate the many benefits of reading.
☆Australia Reads Main Event-Wednesday, November 11 from 12:30 pm
☆Australia Reads Kids-Monday, November 9 from 10:30 am
☆Australia Reads Teens-Tuesday, November 10 from 12:30 pm
Reading has some little-known benefits including reducing stress by 68%-it even works faster than listening to music, going for a walk or enjoying a cup of tea. What's more, a bedtime story six days a week can put kids almost a year ahead when they start school. If those benefits aren't enough to persuade you to pick up a book just yet, Australia Reads has also kindly donated a bunch of books to give away!
You will be offered FREE books by visiting our friendly team at King George Square bus station, Thursday, November 12 from 7:30 am.
We'll be giving away a range of adult and kid books to celebrate Australian Reading Hour until we run out of books.
These are just some of the exciting books we'll have on offer as part of the giveaway-but remember, we’ll have limited numbers available, so first come first serve!

Girls should take part in competitive sport to build confidence, and the leaders of a group of girls' schools will argue this week. Helen Fraser, director of the Girls' Day School Trust(GDST),will tell the group that sport can help girls deal with failure.
“All girls, not just the sporty ones, should take physical exercise,” Ms. Fraser says. Research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying, she argues. Ms. Fraser will tell the group that she supports “sport for all”. “That's why I love it when our schools have A,B, C and D teams and beyond,” she says.
The GDST draws on research from the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation which suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet basic levels of activity each week. One in five girls do no activity at all, twice the proportion(比例)of boys, the research suggests.
Ms. Fraser says other research suggests that more than 80% of women business leaders played sports while growing up. She uses the examples of former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who once was a skater and tennis player, and the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who was in the French national swimming team. Ms. Fraser says Olympic medallists like Jessica Ennis and Katherine Grainger are excellent role models for young women but says women's sport needs more money and more news reports.
Valerie Dunsford, head of Sheffield High School for Girls, part of GDST, said it was important to offer a large number of sports to attract different types of girls. "Not everyone wants to be out playing the hockey.” said Ms. Dunsford.

Children spend more time messaging each other on phones and websites than talking in Person, a survey has revealed. Text messages and social networking sites have become the common mode of youngsters aged 8 to 14.
A survey of modern childhood found that many youngsters are conscious that they are spending too much time on their computers and enjoy themselves the most when playing outside. But the lure(诱惑) of electronic products proves too strong for a quarter, while a fifth say their parents don't like them playing outside because they are worried about strangers and injuries.
The “iGeneration report" suggested that youngsters are increasingly health-conscious and skeptical(特怀疑态度的)of commercialization, including gender-based labelling on toys and pop videos released by singers. Only one child in 100 said that being happy, having a loving family and being clever were taken as the most crucial(决定性的)elements in their lives.
Cary Cooper, the professor of organizational psychology and health at Lancaster University, said social media were contributing to youngsters becoming more independent. They had a sense of individuality due to exposure to a range of media.
The survey follows major state backed research which found that youngsters are turning their back on drink, drugs and smoking. It found a dramatic drop in the number of secondary school students trying and regularly using drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Some analysts said that thanks to the rise of social media, millions of teenagers are spending their time at home in their rooms rather than out on the streets.

Motion sickness is an uncomfortable feeling. The sickness it causes can strike people on an airplane, playing video games, or, commonly, when riding in a car. In a future where people may find themselves running around streets in self-driving vehicles, the problems could get worse.
We typically sense our physical position and movement in the world by relying on our eyes, the feeling we get in our body, and our inner ear. Motion sickness may develop when there's disagreement between what your eyes see and what your inner ear senses. If you're looking at your phone in a moving vehicle, your eyes see a stationary screen but your inner ear feels that you're moving. The result of that dissonance can cause sickness. The common-sense solution is to just stop looking at your phone, but some of the appeal of self-driving cars is that you could use the time to be productive or entertained by what's on a screen.
Researchers of a car-making company and a video game company have been studying ways to address these issues. And their solution uses an interesting medium: sound. The research had two goals: to explore if sound could help relieve motion sickness, and to help people trust self-driving cars more. They experimented with two different categories of sound: tips that tell passengers what's about to happen, and noises that alert passengers when the device has noticed something, like a pedestrian.
The most convincing experiment took place on a closed airport runway in Sweden, near Gothenburg, in August of last year. On that track, brave participants had to ride in the backseat of a car driven by a human and read from a tablet while the car navigated the course. With just 20 people, the study was small, but according to researchers, the presence of sound tips made people report that they felt less ill. Participants said the sounds helped prepare them physically, or adjust their bodies for what was about to happen.
32.When does motion sickness usually happen
A. Sleeping during travels. B. Closing eyes on vehicles.
C. Driving vehicles speedily. D. Riding in moving vehicles.
33. What does the underlined word "dissonance" in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Confusion. B. Potentiality. C. Randomness. D. Disagreement.
34. What is the attitude of the author to the method of sound tips
A. Uncertain. B. Optimistic. C. Concerned. D. Dissatisfaction.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. A study of motion sickness. B. Self-driving vehicles.
C.A convincing experiment. D. The cause and handling of motion sickness.
