A thousand years ago Hong Kong was covered by a thick forest. As more and more people came to live in Hong Kong, these trees were cut down and burnt. Now there is 26 forest left, though there are still some small areas covered with trees. We call these woods.
Elephants, tigers and many other animals were living in the thick forest. When people came to live in Hong Kong, the plants began to die out. Early farmers grew rice and 27 pigs and chickens in the valleys. They cut down the trees and burnt them. They needed fire to keep themselves warm in winter, to cook their food and to keep away from the dangerous animals. Elephants quickly disappeared because there was not enough food for them. 28 did most of the wolves and tigers. Monkeys and many other animals soon 29 in the same way.

The giant panda is one of the most popular animals in the world. A giant panda can grow up to 1.5 meters long and weigh up to 160 kg. People think the giant panda is very lovely. So it is not surprising that the World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) chose the giant panda as its symbol. The WWF tells people about animals that are ① (处于危险中)and raises money to save them.
The giant panda only lives in the wild in China. In the early 1980s, there were only 1, 000 left in the wild. The main reason why pandas are endangered is that the area where pandas can live has become smaller.
The WWF works to help giant pandas in the wild in many ways. One of the ways that help them is to increase the size of panda reserves(自然保护区). Some reserves need to be joined together by planting bamboo between them to make “corridors”. These are paths that lead from one reserve to another. No one may harm the pandas in these areas. The corridors let pandas move from one habitat(栖息地)to another to look for food.②People are working very hard to make sure the giant panda does not die out.

The leaders of 13 countries had a big meeting in St Petersburg, Russia. The meeting was about tigers. They talked about the ways to protect the animals in their countries. They agreed to spend more money protecting tigers and they wanted to double the number of tigers in the world before 2022.

Nine types of tigers lived 100 years ago, but now at least three types of them have died out.“If people leave tigers alone and don’t kill them, then the number of tigers will double in 10 years,” said Jean-Christoph Vie, a French tiger expert.
China is one of the 13 countries where tigers live. There are many wild tigers in China now. Dear Jack,
How are you doing Let me tell you something about the pandas in China. Firstly, we choose suitable places as nature reserves for pandas. Pandas are protected in these areas. Then when the young pandas grow up, they are taught the necessary skills to live in the wild on their own. When they learn as much as necessary, they are set free into the forests to live a normal life. We also try to get help from international organizations, such as WWF. They have given us a lot of knowledge about endangered animals. Welcome to China to see the pandas.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Lei
