Text 6
M: What do you think of the film we saw last night
W: It’s a great film, isn’t it
M: Yes, it is a great film although the name sounds frightening. By the way, I’m hungry. Where
can we have a meal
W: Well, Bella Rosa is nice but the food there is expensive and unhealthy. I think the Indian

M: OK, let’s go to the Indian restaurant.
Text 7
W: Good afternoon. Dr. Anderson’s office.
M: Hello, my name is John Smith. and I was hoping I could come in today to see the doctor.

M: Well, if you are going to read Shakespeare, you must know that he never wrote any of his plays
to be read.
W: What He didn’t want anyone to read them
M: I mean he didn’t want one person to sit alone and read them. He wanted the plays acted out!
W: Oh, I get it. So, you’re saying that I should act out the play instead of reading it
M: Exactly! Find some students in your class and act it out together. It will be exciting. And you
will understand the play much better.
Text 9
W: Mr. Smith, does your son get along well with others at school
M: Actually he has very few friends at school. Do you have any good tips
W: Well, children are not born knowing how to make and keep friends. You need to set a good
example for him.
M: Oh, I’m not good at making friends. I guess my son and I need to learn together. Do you have
any other tips
W: Well, tell him everyone needs friends and that friends play an important role in everyone’s life.
When he behaves well with a friend, praise him. This will encourage him to make more
friends.
M: You are right. Encouragement is really important.

friends if he has little chance to spend time with them.

As we all know, cultural relics can help us know a period of history, and contribute to cultural
research. Besides, cultural relics are precious/valuable heritage passed down by our ancestors,
which plays an important role in official history. In addition, they can deepen the love for our
motherland. So it’s very important for us to protect cultural relics. First, we should make relevant
laws and increase the punishment of illegal acts. Second, we should raise awareness of the
protection of cultural relics and actively fight with crimes against cultural relics.
As a student, we should be civilized tourists and take the responsibility for preserving and
passing down the cultural relics.

Remembering everything she could from her emergency training, Jessica took Zack to
the basement(地下室 ). With the electricity cut off, it was completely dark in the basement.
Jassica held Zack’s trembling hand tightly, and they felt their way in the darkness with great care.
Finally, they sat down in a corner .Outside, the lightning flashed, the thunder roared, and the
furious wind howled, which threatened to put the world to an end. Feeling overwhelmingly scared,
little Zack burst into tears, saying, “I miss my mom.” Jessica held him in her arms and stroked
his forehead, saying , “Honey, don’t be afraid! Everything will be all right.”
After a final crash, the sound of the storm grew distant. Knowing the storm had died
away, Jessica sighed with relief. The pair hugged each other and cried for joy. Finally, they
returned to the house, only to find everything in a mess. It was’t long before Mrs Hill arrived.
Seeing zack safe and sound, she thanked Jessica for what she had done with grateful tears. After
giving each other a big hug, Mrs Hill and Zack said goodbye to Jessica. Without Jessica’s kindness
and bravery, Zack couldn’t have had a narrow escape from death.

TripAdvisor, a leading travel website, says it will no longer sell tickets to attractions where
tourists come into contact with wild animals or endangered species. The policy(政策 ) change
includes, but is not limited to, elephant rides, “swim with” activities involving(涉及) the touching or
riding of dolphins, and the petting of caught wild animals such as tigers.
The company also announces that it is developing an educational website, with the aid of
several wildlife protection groups, to inform tourists about animal welfare practices.
“TripAdvisor’s new booking policy and education effort is designed as a means to do our part
in helping improve the health and safety standards of animals, especially in markets with limited
regulatory protections,” says TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer in a statement. “We believe the end
result of our efforts will be enabling travelers to make more thoughtful choices about whether to visit
an animal attraction and to write more meaningful comments about those attractions,” says Kaufer.
The company, which operates the Viator booking service, will stop selling tickets to some
animal attractions immediately. The policy will be fully carried out when the educational website is
ready.

As National Geographic reports, TripAdvisor has been under pressure from animal welfare
groups to steer away from attractions known to cause animals mental and physical sufferings that
can shorten their lives.
National Geographic adds, “When trained to carry visitors, elephants go through a ‘crush’,
which often involves being beaten with nail-tipped sticks and kept in small cages. Tigers and lions
often are drugged to make them safer for tourists to pet and take photos with. Dolphins trained for
tourists to swim with are unable to hunt, move, and play as they would in the wild, which raises their
level of stress and can result in strange behavior.”
Viator says for several years it has stopped travel bookings where wild animals are killed or
injured for blood sports. TripAdvisor has also banned comments for businesses promoting attractions
such as bullfights or captive hunts.

A new app called curbi is providing parents with strong control over their children’s online
activity, any time, anywhere!
Any parent of a child who has access to technology, which covers any kid old enough to point a
finger, fights endless battles around proper usage, time spent and time wasted on personal devices(设
备).
Developed by a team in Western Australia, once set up, it links parents to all devices used by
their kids—iPhones, iPads and iPods—so that they can direct, block or monitor their Internet time in
detail.
With the touch of a button, you can put your kid’s tablet into 10 minutes of ‘Time Out’ (that’s
zero Internet access), or block his or her access to social media and time-wasting apps to keep her
focused during study.
The beauty of the app is that parents can set the rules (eg a ‘bedtime’ mode that allows no social
media or video apps like YouTube) and apply them any time, anywhere – whether children are on the
home network, or using free wifi or mobile data. It can even disable the device’s camera, photo
stream and block in-app purchases, screenshots and app installations. Curbi’s most obvious
application is for keeping kids safe, allowing parents to block content such as adult, TV and video
sites.
The monitoring aspect allows parents to check what each of their techno children is up to on
their device, at a glance—a detailed report of how many minutes are spent on each site or app can
even be emailed.

Some building work threatens Turkish(土耳其的 ) cultural relics. Other kinds of building work
save them. A hotel in Antakya shows how economic development and archaeology can coexist.
It was 2009 and Antakya, a city in southern Turkey, was developing fast. Necmi Asfuroglu, a
local businessman, decided to build a hotel on the land that he had owned since the 1990s. The place
was only a few hundred metres from the Grotto of St Peter, one of the world’s oldest churches.
Before building work started, a team of archaeologists was called in to examine the site. They
discovered a broken vase here, a statue there, and almost everywhere colourful mosaic pieces. By the
time they had finished, they had unearthed parts of what had once been the heart of Antioch, one of
the biggest cities of the Roman empire.
With these discoveries, Mr Asfuroglu’s plans went up in smoke. “We had to rethink
everything,” he said. Rather than walk away from the project, he asked an Istanbul architect, Emre
Arolat, to make a design that would put together a modern hotel and an archaeological museum. The
building work began in 2010, but stopped again for almost two years after workers came across
other cultural relics. In 2020, the museum hotel finally opened its door for business.
For Mr Arolat, the challenge was to find an architectural language that joined the past glory of
an archaeological site and the modern charm of a business hotel. For inspiration, he looked to a
museum showcasing the medieval(中世纪的 ) ruins of a Norwegian town. The result is a building
that gives a good example of how preservation and buisness can profitably coexist.
From the outside, the “museum hotel” that Mr Arolat designed looks like a steel and glass Jenga
tower lying on its side and piled up with long rectangular blocks the size of shipping containers(集装
箱 ), each housing a hotel room. The interior is a huge open space criss-crossed by bridges and
walkways that overlook the mosaics and ruins below. The whole building rests on over 60
columns(柱子). One entrance serves the hotel, the other the publicly accessible museum.
32. Why was it impossible to carry out Necmi Asfuroglu’s former plans
A. The architect he turned to showed great dislike for them.
B. They threatened the cultural relics discovered in the site.
C. A team of archaeologists was called in to go against them.
D. They were burned to the ground before building work started.
33. What inspired Emre Arolat to design the museum hotel
A. A museum showing the ruins of a Norwegian town.
B. The heart of Antioch, one of the biggest Roman cities.
C. The cultural relics unearthed in Antakya, a Turkish city.
D. The Grotto of St Peter, one of the world’s oldest churches.

From her lifeguard(救生员) station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming in the
sky. By the time she took a break at 2:30, the wind was picking up and the sky was darkening. The
pool manager announced over the loudspeaker(扩音器) that the pool was closing immediately, due to
a weather warning. He asked everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.
All the swimmers had left by 3:30 except for Jessica’s neighbour, eight-year-old Zack Hill.
Zack’s mother had dropped him off at the pool while she went to work. She had planned to pick him
up later, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided that she would drop Zack off on her way
home. She stuck(粘贴) a note for Mrs hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.
The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm.
The wind was very strong, the storm clouds were dark and the sky had turned a terrible green. The
rain hit just as Jessica turned onto her street. Jessica said, “Jack, I’m going to take you to my house.
We need to get inside right away, and your house is father away than mine.”
She pressed the garage(车库) door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The
front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight
their way out of the car and into the house. Jessica held Zack’s hand firmly. The door was heavy with
the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jesssica’s hand and it hit the side
of the house. The window broke into pieces. Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them
inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.
