Whether you’re looking to learn more about sustainability or imagine yourself as a media big man at the head of a world-famous magazine, here are several books worth popping on your Good Reads list.
The Conscious Closetby Elizabeth L. Cline As the pressure to save the planet increases, it’s important to turn the conversation to our closet(衣帽间). Stockpiling endless printed books on sustainability seems somewhat unwise, but The Conscious Closet is easily the best of the lot. It exposes the true cost of fast fashion and encourages the reader to think twice about unwise purchasing, drawing deeply on Cline’s own experiences.
How To Dress: Secret StylingTips From A Fashion Insiderby Alexandra Fullerton Former fashion editor at Stylist magazine, Alexandra Fullerton certainly knows something about getting dressed. Illustrated beautifully, this book allows you to dip easily in and out of her easy-to-follow advice, helping you carve out a signature style, shop more effectively and even wash and store your clothes to maximize their full potential.
The New Fashion Rulesby Victoria Magrath One of the UK’s most successful fashion bloggers, Victoria McGrath has used her platform to demonstrate the growing value of influencer culture on fashion and new media. Her friendly, accessible tone is backed up with some serious knowledge — her PhD in fashion marketing allows her to explore how far fashion has come in recent decades, discussing many things including virtual reality shopping while offering up a brief tour of fashion’s 21st century history.
Advanced Loveby Ari Seth Cohen The photographic blog series that made stars of Iris Apfel and Linda Rodin, the Advanced Style brand has grown over the past decade, demonstrating that real beauty is truly ageless. His third and most recent book, Advanced Love sees Ari Seth Cohen picturing couples from all walks of life, making a statement about our dismissal of romance within the 0ver-40 age set. The perfect festive gift for your special other-half, or a treat-to-self as a constant reminder that love never goes out of style.

Grandma, almost ninety years old, sat weakly on the park bench. She didn’t move. She just sat with her head down staring at her hands.
When I sat down beside her, she didn’t even notice me. I wondered if she was OK. So I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head, looked at me and said with a smile, “Yes, I’m fine .Thank you for asking me.” “I didn’t mean to disturb you, Grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,” I explained to her.
“Have you ever looked at your hands ” She asked.“I mean really looking at your hands.” I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. And then I turned them over. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point my grandma was making.
Grandma smiled and told me the following story, “My hands put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war. They were uneasy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band, they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote my letters to him and shook when I buried my parents. They held my children and grandchildren and comforted my neighbors. They covered my face, combed my hair and washed the rest of my body. These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and the ruggedness of life.”
I never look at my hands the same again. When my hands are hurt or when I touch the faces of my children and my husband, I think of my grandma. I know I can also create a bright future using my hands.

A.couldn’t do anything as a result of her weak hands
B.lived a poor life without any help of technology
C.felt very tired when dealing with life with her weak hands
D.managed to go through many difficulties with her weak hands

Human’s fingerprint can be seen across the planet today, from the pyramids to the skyscrapers and from roads to agriculture. But what would the world look like if humans had never existed
A scientist has painted a picture of the world without modern humans. “I think it would be an overgrowing place with a wealth of animals ranging across all continents,” said Gilbert Williams, a biologist in Australia.
Human beings have shaped the world at the expense of many species, from the dodos to dinosaurs, which we drove to extinction through unsustainable activities. The extinction rate on Earth today is more than 100 times what it would be without humans. In other words, human beings hit this planet like an asteroid from space, and the “dust” is still affecting the livelihood of wildlife.
Scientists also believe human beings played a key role in the disappearance of large mammals. Without humans, massive animals would live across Europe. Meanwhile, the Americas would be home to bears and elephants, along with unique species like giant mammoths (猛犸象). “In a world without humans, there would be a much bigger diversity of large mammals,” Dr. Gilbert said. They survived climate changes and likely could have survived to the present day were it not for the pressure humans placed on them.
The climate might also be different. Though activities such as the burning on fossil fuels, human beings have a great impact on Earth’s climate by raising the average global temperature. Earth, therefore, would have been much cooler without us.
However, human beings are not the only intelligent creatures on this planet. There’re no reasons why other intelligent animals couldn’t have evolved like that eventually, given enough time. “Removing us might have opened the door for others,” Dr. Gilbert said. “Maybe they would make all the same mistakes that we’ve done. Who knows ”
8.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage
A.By telling a joke. B.By giving details.
C.By listing problems. D.By raising a question.
9.What is the purpose of the underlined word “asteroid” in Paragraph 3
A.To stress the damage humans brought to wildlife.
B.To reduce environmental pollution on this planet.
C.To praise efforts humans made to shape the world.
D.To show high expense of protecting many species.
10.What can we infer about huge mammals from Dr. Gilbert
A.Their diversity is smaller than before.
B.They added pressure on human beings.
C.Their activities caused global warming.
D.They disappeared due to climate changes.
11.What would happen if human beings were removed according to Dr. Gilbert
A.Dinosaurs might return to this planet.
B.There would be no pollution any more.
C.Other smart creatures might come to power.
D.Intelligent animals would avoid making mistakes.
D
Just as a hungry brain craves (渴望) food, a lonely brain craves people. A new brain study demonstrates this. After being left alone, it shows people's brains would be activated at the sight of other people. The action was in the same brain region that speeds up when a hungry person sees food.
Livia Tomova, a neuroscientist, who studies how the brain produces mental activities, and her colleagues began this study. They recruited (招募) 40 people. On one day, the participants had to fast—not eat anything at all—for 10 hours. On another day, the same people were placed in a room for 10 hours. They couldn't see anyone. No friends, no family and no social media. They weren't even allowed to check their email. After both days, Tomova and her colleagues put the people in a MRI machine. It shows activity in the brain by tracking how much blood is flowing to each region.
At the end of each day, the participants showed high activity in a brain area called the midbrain. The scientists were interested in two, small areas within it. Both areas produce dopamine, a chemical that is important in craving and rewards. The two areas activated when hungry participants saw pictures of tasty pizza or juicy hamburgers. After the volunteers had been isolated, those brain areas became active when they saw social activities they missed. It might be playing sports or chatting with friends.
The midbrain plays an important part in people's motivation to seek food or friends. In fact, it responds to food and social signals even when people aren't hungry or lonely. But hunger and loneliness increased the reactions and made people's responses specific to the thing they were missing. And the more hunger or isolation the volunteers said they were experiencing, the stronger the activity in this part of the brain. Tomova and her colleagues published their results November 23 in Nature Neuroscience.
12.How does Tomova test out the result of the study
A.By stimulating desire. B.By controlling blood flow.
C.By monitoring brain activity. D.By examining mental activities.
13.What do we know about midbrain
A.It consists of two areas. B.It helps motivate desire for food.
C.It stops working when people are full. D.It decreases responses to lost friends.
14.What does the underlined “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.A midbrain area. B.A social activity. C.A volunteer. D.A hamburger.
15.What can be the best title for the text
A.Dopamine—a Sure Sign of Age B.Midbrain—a Nest for the Thoughts
C.Hunger Makes Mental Health Struggle D.Loneliness Makes Our Brains Need People

Don’t you think walking in the city is very different from walking in the park?A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. 16 . It can ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive(认知的)tiredness and improve reaction times straight away. 17
The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a 15-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene. 18 On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
19 Participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image (the same ones from the first experiment).
Measuring reaction times in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes. 20 Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.
A.Nature influences us in many ways.
B.A walk through nature does the opposite, though.
C.The reason is that urban environments are more distracting.
D.They said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.
E.The second dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.
F.After each, participants were asked to rate their discomfort.
G.Different approaches are employed in the separate experiment.

When Aiden asked me to go with him on a camping trip to the mountains, I thought it would mean a cottage with a wood-burning fireplace and hot chocolate. My comfortable image of camping became a nightmare (噩梦) when Aiden and his older brother, Lebron, showed up with camping supplies-tents, rolled-up sleeping bags, and canteens! I did pack a backpack, as instructed, but I had no idea we were going on survival training!
Lebron had a perfect plan, and he hurried me to get in so we could leave the busy city life behind us. Ahead, the mountains appeared bigger than I had remembered them: the trees were larger, and the environment was much more dangerous. At least the weather was amazing-cotton-candy clouds dotted the deep blue sky.
Before we began hiking, Lebron had a sleeping bag stuffed into my pack and told Aiden and me about hiking rules. The first part of the road looked easy. Soon, the path became narrower and rougher, forcing me to talk less. As we went higher, I could see the road zigzagging (蜿蜒) up the mountain.
“It looks closer than it is,” Lebron said, reading my facial expressions. “This is the most difficult part…watch your step, not the view. Loose rocks and tree roots make the road dangerous.”
Finally, we reached the top. My legs aching, I dropped my pack and complained. “No time to rest,” Lebron said, looking up at the sky. The weather had been warm all day, and it felt good to relax in the cool wind. “The weather up here changes quickly, and that cool air means a storm is around the corner. We need to set up camp.”

If you have any questions, please contact the student union.
47.例文:I thought Lebron was kidding, but without delay they worked expertly. I stood around and pretended to help, thunder rumbling in the distance. We had just finished putting up the tents when it hit. The wind, thunder, and lightning were relentless.
Lebron, sensing that I was scared, reached in his backpack for candies. Handing some candies to me, he started told us some stories about his camping adventures. But each time lightning lit up the tent and the thunder echoed, I jumped. “Don’t worry. Summer storms pass quickly,” Leo said trying to comfort me. “And at least the rain will keep the bears away,” he said with a teasing smile, which was less comforting. And as quickly as the storm came rushing in, it passed, and we exited the tent. The view was incredible—I could see for miles. As darkness set in, I stared in wonder at the millions of glowing stars in the night sky. I knew this was an adventure I would never forget.
