Text 21
Social customs and ways of behaving have changed over time. Customs are also
different from country to country. The Americans and the British not only speak the
same language but also share many social customs. For example, people shake hands
when they meet for the first time in both America and England. Also, most
Englishmen will offer their seat to a woman or open a door for a woman, and so will
most Americans. Being on time is of great importance in both countries. That is, if a
dinner is for 6:30, you either arrive close to that time or make a phone call to explain
that you may be late.
One important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that
might make others feel uneasy — especially if they are your guests. Here is an old
story. When the food was served, one of the guests began cutting the peas with his
knife. When the other guests were amused or greatly surprised, the host picked up his
knife and started to eat in the same way. It would be bad manners to make his guest
feel foolish or uncomfortable.
Text 22
Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope your visit here will be a
pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of the laws here.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy wine or beer if you are
under 18 years old.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means. But please don’t make unpleasant
noise, especially at night.
Thirdly, crossing the street. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the
road in this country. Use crossing and don’t take any chances when crossing the road.
My next point is about waste. It’s against the law to throw away rubbish in a public
place. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take
it home, or put it in the dustbin.
Finally, smoking. It is against the law to buy cigarettes if you are under 16 years
old.

五、One possible vision:
Nowadays, many children are treated as “little emperors” at home. Parents show so
much love for their children that when they face problems, they don’t know what to
do. So it’s important for children to learn to be independent.
In my opinion, parents should believe in their children and never do everything for
them. It’s necessary to give children proper advice and more chances to make their
own decisions.
As for children, they shouldn’t depend on their parents too much. On the one hand,
they should learn to do chores. It helps to develop their independence and teaches
them how to look after themselves. On the other hand, they ought to face difficulties
bravely and try to solve them.
In a word, the earlier children learn to be independent, the better it is for their
future.
