Text 21
We held a discussion about “What is Happiness” last week and we found we all had
different opinions.
Some students believed that they would be happy if they would be able to do
anything they wanted to do with all their money, and some thought that they should be
in good health and enjoy whatever they like. Many students wished to get a lot of
wealth from their parents. In this way they wouldn’t have to work hard, and they
could own everything.
I don’t quite agree with the points above. I don’t think money means happiness.
There are many things that we can’t buy with money, such as health and knowledge. I
value knowledge which makes me happy, for I can do a lot for mankind with
knowledge. Although different people value happiness in different ways, my
happiness comes from my studies.
Text 22
Edward is a fourteen-year-old boy. He comes from the UK, but he lives in Beijing
with his parents.
Before Edward came to China, he knew nothing about Beijing Opera. Like most
kids, Edward liked music. But when he first listened to Beijing Opera, he didn’t like it
and thought it was too slow and boring.
One week after that, Edward started studying in a middle school in Beijing. He had
music lessons twice a week. He started to learn Beijing Opera in the music class. His
school asked some great Beijing Opera singers to teach them. Edward couldn’t study
well, but it sounded much more interesting than before, and he became interested in it.
Now Edward loves Beijing Opera very much.
“I really love Beijing Opera, and I want to be a singer when I grow up.” Edward
said, “I hope more people can love it. Maybe one day, we will see a foreign young
man become a great Beijing Opera singer.”

五、One possible version:
Dear Sam,
How time flies! It’s time for us to say goodbye. You have offered me so much help
in my English that I think words to show thanks are far from enough.
I still remember three years ago I had difficulties in learning English. It was
difficult for me to memorize so many words and understand what people were saying.
My spoken English and written English were poor, too. However, I am so lucky that I
met you, a kind-hearted, smart and patient boy. Firstly, you taught me to listen more
and read more. And it really helped me a lot. Besides, you suggested that I should
watch English movies and sing classic English songs. In addition, you told me to form
the habit of reading aloud in the morning and reading novels before going to bed. As a
result, I finally made great progress. And I wish you happy and healthy.
Yours sincerely,
Li Mei
