Years ago, I could not stick to exercising until I bought a CD called I Enjoy Exercise. I listened
to it every day. I bought the CD because I wanted to run in a race and hopefully win!
I had promised my 10-year-old son Todd that I would run in a race with him. Unfortunately,
however, when that race came about, his left leg was hurt in a car accident. Without him running
with me, although I took part in that race, yet I didn’t do quite well in it.
While Todd couldn’t run together with me because of his injury, he never forgot the promise I
made for him. He was always asking me whether I would keep my promise when he recovered in
the future. So I decided I was going to train and go all out to win the next race. What I needed was
motivation (动力). It happened that one of my friends mentioned the CD which he liked very much,
saying that he got a lot from the music in it when feeling down. So I bought it and listened to it
while exercising every day.
It was amazing what happened to my thinking as I listened to it daily. I started to think about
the repeated words on the CD - “I enjoy exercise”. Instead of dreading exercise, I was thinking,
“I enjoy exercise.”
I found out how important words are that we play in our minds every day. I went from a person
who seldom exercised to someone who started to exercise daily. Just think how our lives will
improve if we reflect on the uplifting and motivating words of the famous works. I have found the
positive messages have greatly improved my thinking and then changed my life.
How did I do in that race, you might be thinking I actually won the gold medal in my age
group.

B. The motivating words make a difference to us.
C. Parents should get along well with children.

A world-famous Canadian writer, Margaret Atwood, has created the world’s first long-distance
signing tool, the LongPen.
高一英语试题 第 4页(共 10页)
After many tiring book-signing from city to city, Atwood thought there must be a better way to
do them. She hired some technical experts and started her own company. Together they designed
the LongPen. Here’s how it works: The writer writes a personal message and signature (签名) on a
computer tablet (手写板) using a special pen. On the receiving end, in another city, a robotic arm
fitted with a regular pen signs the book. The writer and fan can talk with each other through
webcams (网络摄像机) and computer screens.
Work on the LongPen began in Atwood’s basement (地下室 ). At first, they had no idea it
would be as hard as it turned out to be. The tool went through several versions (版本), including
one that actually had smoke coming out of it. When it was finally completed, test runs were made
in Ottawa, and the LongPen was publicly launched (上市;发行) at the 2016 London Book Fair.
From here, Atwood conducted two transatlantic book signings of her latest book for fans
in Toronto and New York City.
The LongPen produces a unique signature each time because it copies the movement of the
writer in real time. It has several other possible applications. It could increase credit card safety and
allow people to sign contracts (合同) from another province. The video exchange between signer
and receiver can be recorded on DVD for proof when legal documents are used.
“It’s really fun”, said the owner of a bookstore, “Obviously you can’t shake hands with the
writer, but there are chances for a connection that you don’t get from a regular book signing.”
The reaction to the invention has not been all good. Atwood has received criticism from writers
who think she is trying to end book tours. But she said, “It will be possible to go to places that you
never got sent to before because the publishers couldn’t afford it.”
28. Why did Atwood decide to invent the LongPen
A. To set up her own company. B. To win herself greater popularity.
C. To write her books in a new way. D. To make book signings less tiring.
29. How does the LongPen work
A. It copies the writer’s signature and prints it on a book.
B. It signs a book while receiving the writer’s signature.
C. The webcam sends the writer’s signature to another city.
D. The fan uses it to copy the writer’s signature himself.
30. What do we know about the invention of the LongPen
A. It has been completed but not put into use.
B. The basement caught fire by accident.
C. Some versions failed before its test run.
D. The designers were well-prepared for the difficulty.
31. What could be inferred from Paragraphs 5 and 6
A. Publishers dislike the LongPen for its high cost.
B. Critics think the LongPen is of little use.
C. Bookstore owners do not support the LongPen.
D. Atwood doesn’t mean to end book tours.

Germany’s top court (法院) has ruled that parts of the country’s 2019 climate action law must
be changed because they don’t do a good job of protecting young people. The result is a big victory
for the nine young people who started the law suing (诉讼).
The court suing stresses an important part of the climate change: The change will affect greatly
young people far more than the adults. That’s because the effects of earth warming will become
more serious over time. As young people become adults, they’ll be left to deal with many problems
that today’s adults have ignored. The government’s failure to plan carefully was putting their future
lives in danger.
In 2019, Germany passed a new law, promising that the country would be carbon neutral (碳中
和) by 2050. The law made a detailed plan of action until 2030. But the law didn’t have any specific
rules or plans for climate actions that would be taken between 2031 and 2050.
Last Thursday, the judges of Germany’s highest court agreed with the young people. They said
that not taking climate action made the basic rights of young people to a good future in danger.
The young people had challenged the government’s law in four specific areas. The judges
didn’t agree with all of the challenges. But having the court support even a part of their case is seen
as a big victory. Neubauer is one of the young people who sued. She works with the climate action
group Fridays For Future. Ms. Neubauer said, “Climate protection is our basic right. This is a huge
win for the climate movement. It changes a lot.”
The court has asked the German government to fix the law by the end of 2022. The climate
law will now need to have a much more detailed plan for the actions that will be taken after 2030 to
cut Germany’s pollution, allowing it to become carbon neutral by 2050. Germany’s government has
said that it will quickly begin working to make the needed changes.
32. Why did the nine young people sue the Germany government
A. They faced a higher rate of losing jobs.
B. The government refused their law suing.
C. The local court ruled against the climate law.
D. They weren’t satisfied with the climate action law.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The adults nowadays are put under pressure.
B. The climate change will influence the young.
C. Earth warming is becoming out of control.
D. Humans feel uncertain about the future.
34. What is the government required to do about the climate law
A. Improve the present law.
B. Win people’s wide support.
C. Take strict punishment measures.
D. Achieve carbon neutral in advance.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Business. B. Health. C. Education. D. Environment.

The “freshman fifteen”
You may not have heard the words “freshman fifteen” before, but they are very important for
students who are entering university. 36 “Fifteen” refers to fifteen pounds — the fifteen

Mistakes choosing food
37 Some students choose unhealthy food, because now their parents are not nearby to
help them choose. Some students visit the kitchen many times while studying. Late at night, some
students get unhealthy fast food such as French fries and chicken nuggets with soda to drink.
Eating right

Eat plenty of vegetables and healthy meats.

第四部分 写作(满分 25分)
Dear David,
I’m very sorry to hear that a conflict occurred between you and your mother
because of your Internet addiction.
In my opinion, you should apologize to your mother, as she has done nothing
wrong to prevent you from Internet addiction. Although the Internet plays an
important role in modern life, we can’t ignore its harm to us. Many students spend
most of their time playing computer games or chatting aimlessly with others, which
may not only result in poor health and decline in study but also loss of communication
in the real world.
As students, we should devote our energy to study. When available, you may as
well walk outside with your friends or take some exercise to keep fit instead of
playing online games. Only in this way can you live and study happily and healthily.
Yours,
Li Hua
