Craig Blackburn, a father and car fan, built a Batmobile for his son’s hope for using the vehicle to brighten the lives of sick children. And now he hopes to use it for more than just his son’s hope after seeing the children’s reaction to the Batmobile.
Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups, he estimated that only about one in 50 attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.
Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell (外壳) overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.
Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower (喷火器) onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn’s son for his hope.
“It was great. It was so good to see the kids’ and adults’ excitement at seeing the Batmobile.” Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible, so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.
24. What is Craig Blackburn’s initial purpose of constructing the Batmobile
A. To realise his son’s hope. B. To donate it to sick children.
C. To test the children’s reaction. D. To pursue his car-making dream.
25. How did Blackburn feel about the car-making
A. Hopeful and interesting. B. Unimaginable yet meaningful.
C. Impossible and boring. D. Challenging yet worth-trying.
26. How did Blackburn’s friend help him
A. By making an outer shell for him. B. By sharing the knowledge of building cars.
C. By offering him financial support. D. By telling him the background of the car factory.
27. What is the car lovers’ expectation of the Batmobile
A. It will be put to practical use soon. B. It can be displayed around the world.
C. It can change the lives of sick children. D. It will appear in the next film about Batman.

As a popular subject of study among evolutionary ecologists (进化生态学家), three-spined stickleback is known for their different shapes, sizes, and behaviors — they can even live in both seawater and freshwater, and under a wide range of temperatures. But what makes that
The researchers tracked six populations of the fish before and after seasonal changes to their environment, using genome sequencing (基因组测序). Seasonal changes result in great changes in habitat structure and balance of salt and freshwater, and only those fish able to tolerate these rapid changes survive into the next season.
“These changes probably resemble the habitat shifts experienced by stickleback populations during the past 10,000 years,” says Professor Barrett. “We hope to gain insight into the genetic changes that may have resulted from natural selection long in the past.”
Remarkably, the researchers discovered the evidence of genetic changes driven by the seasonal shifts in habitats, which mirrored the differences found between long-established freshwater and saltwater populations. “These genetic changes occurred in independent populations over a single season, highlighting just how quickly the effects of natural selection can be detected,” says Professor Barrett, “The findings suggest that we may be able to use the genetic differences to predict how populations may adapt to environment.”
The research emphasizes the importance of studying species in dynamic environments to gain a better understanding of how natural selection operates. In further research, they plan to investigate how repeatable the observed genetic changes are, by testing whether they show up year after year. Doing so would demonstrate their ability to reliably forecast the evolutionary future of these populations.
28. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in Paragraph l
A. Stickleback has a wide range of body temperatures.
B. Stickleback is popular with evolutionary ecologists.
C. Stickleback can adapt to different living conditions.
D. Stickleback has different shapes, sizes, and behaviors.
29. What aspect of the research is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The difficulties. B. The purpose. C. The background. D. The methods.
30. What is the main reason for stickleback’s survival
A. Habitat shifts. B. Genetic changes.
C. Seasonal changes. D. Independent populations.
31. Why will scientists study the repetition of the genetic changes
A. To know what natural selection is.
B. To study species in dynamic environments.
C. To test the reliability of the present discoveries.
D. To forecast the evolutionary future of certain species.

Boston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents' needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities liveable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.
Kris Carter rolled out Boston's smart city program in 2014. It started with an App that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city sorted out those reports and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work.
The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts (警报) came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest. “The complaints from the App didn't always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs,” explains Carter.
Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy (精通技术的) residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city's 1,700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition.
Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, says Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents' lives. Take the sidewalk repair program, walking on the streets was proved a useful, if inefficient way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers' mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods.
“Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good,” says Carter, “We're really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem.”
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The citizens' life. B. The city's reputation.
C. The city's management. D. The benefits of technology.
33. What problem did Kris Carter's team meet when carrying out their program
A. They faced many technical obstacles. B. They couldn't serve all residents well.
C. They were not supported by residents. D. They were annoyed by being short-staffed.
34. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with
A. Maximizing the benefits of technology. B. Giving full play to the power of residents.
C. Mixing approaches to solving problems. D. Letting tech companies be a leading role.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Smart City: More Than Just Tech B. A City with Intelligent Facilities
C. Joint-effort in City Construction D. The Modernization of a City

How to Understand the Mind of an Interviewer
Getting inside an interviewer’s head can be tricky, as their perspective will change according to personality type, professional role, and personal experience. 36
Research the company to determine what the interviewer is looking pany culture (work-life balance, atmosphere, etc.) is a great indicator of what your interviewer will want to see in candidates. 37 You can look for company mission statements for a better understanding of company culture, or quotes from top-level executives (领导层), like CEOs, which often set the tone for company culture.
Look up the interviewer when possible. 38 This is the perfect chance to look up background information on the interviewer on the company’s website. Professional and social media platforms can also help you better know what to expect from an interviewer.
39 Many interviewers determine the truthfulness of your resume (简历) this way. If you respond with answers that are inconsistent with what you wrote in your resume, many interviewers will interpret it as a red flag. Thus, remember to review the start and end dates of positions listed on your resume and try not to be annoyed at this kind of fact checking.
Identify how the interviewer’s position will influence expectations. The role of your interviewer usually has an impact on what that person expects from a candidate. An HR representative, for example, will want to know you’re a good fit with the company culture and values. A direct manager, however, would be most interested in your practical ability to do the job.
Regardless of their roles, most interviewers will want to know you’ll make their lives easier. 40
A. Be consistent with what you wrote in your resume.
B. Expect the interviewer to question you on your resume.
C. Therefore, it’s not an easy job to understand their mind.
D. So try to make a point of addressing this during the interview.
E. Usually, you’ll be informed of your interviewer’s name before you meet them.
F. However, you can research on the interviewer and tailor your answers to stand out.
G. In most situations, interviewers will expect you to share similar values with the company.

One Saturday morning, Jeremy woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, “Mom, are you ok ” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal (燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I’m going to stay in bed.”
Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Jeremy help First, he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do Jeremy thought. Saturday was the day when mom did laundry. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother’s favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothing inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START.” Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

第一节 应用文(满分 15 分)
A Story of Kindness
It was a cold rainy evening. I was heading home after school when I saw a car parked on the roadside, with a window open. The driver must have forgotten to roll up the window. The rain was pouring through the window onto the front seat of the car. I was wondering if I could do something when a young lady stopped by and covered the window with her raincoat. Then she took out her phone, trying to contact the driver. This act of kindness made me feel warm that cold rainy evening.
第二节 读后续写
But he remembered there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. “Where did it come from ” Jeremy wondered, reaching into the washer for more clothes. Then much to his astonishment, he pulled out two T-shirts, both in light pink. Then he caught sight of the red socks, and it suddenly occurred to him that they must be to blame for the accident. Not knowing how to handle the situation, Jeremy even thought of hiding the dress from his mom. “That isn’t a positive approach to the problem,” he reminded himself. Finally, he decided to dry and fold the laundry before telling his mom everything.
Holding the neatly folded pink dress, Jeremy nervously knocked at his mom’s bedroom door again. After what seemed like ages, he came to the bedside, his head drooping. “Sorry mom, I shouldn’t have ruined your favorite dress.” Jeremy apologized, ready to get a good scolding for his wrongdoing. Realizing what’s going on, mom smiled understandingly at Jeremy, “Never mind, dear. I know you meant to help.” Then mom held the dress up before her and said in an approving tone, “You know what I think it looks nice.” At this Jeremy sighed with relief, promising silently to be more careful in helping his mom out next time.

W: No problem. Get some rest if you can. You don’t know how tight the schedule is for this business trip.
