For many white-collar workers around the world, the recent pandemic has meant having to work from home. Their usual office location has been out of bounds. This means different working practices, which have advantages and disadvantages for employees. But the big question is, “Will they ever see their offices again ”
Home working has made people realize what tasks they can perform at home, rather than enduring a commute to the office to do the same thing. It has given them more time with the family; they’ve been sleeping better and have saved money by not travelling or buying lunches on the go. And recent research suggests the majority of people working from home are just as productive.
For some people, this could be a permanent arrangement. In the UK, fifty of the biggest employers questioned by BBC, have said they have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time in the near future. Of course, one main reason is that firms couldn’t see a way of accommodating large numbers of staff while social distancing regulations were still in place. But BBC also heard from some smaller businesses who are deciding to abandon their offices altogether. Other bigger companies are also looking at shutting offices to save money as many jobs can be performed remotely. Peter Cheese, head of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, told BBC: “We’re at a moment of real change in the world of work, driven by big existential crises.”
But this isn’t great news for everyone. Some employees can feel isolated at home, and there’s less opportunity to network or learn from other people, especially if they’re a new recruit. Also, city centers may suffer most from a change in working habits. Shops and cafes rely on the footfall of office workers, and without them, they face closure. The future is still uncertain, which is why it may be too early to say where our desks will be permanently located. But the office of the future may be your home.
24. What does the underlined phrase “a commute to the office” in paragraph 2 mean
A. The journey to and back from the office.
B. The distance between the office partners.
C. A communication from the office.
D. A call at the office.
25. According to the text, which is NOT the benefit of working from home
A. More time to accompany the family. B. Less money on lunches on the go.
C. A better sleep. D. Higher efficiency.
26. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Half employers will fire their staff.
B. Large numbers of staff will leave office.
C. Some employees won’t see their offices again.
D. Firms couldn’t deal with social distancing regulations.
27. What could be the best title for this text
A. Does Working From Home Benefit a Lot
B. Will Offices Disappear in the Future
C. The Usual Office Location Has Been out of Bounds
D. Different Working Practices Have Advantages and Disadvantages
C
Teenagers who check social media for several hours a day are at the risk of developing ADHD (多动症), a study has concluded.
The research team, from the University of Southern California, tracked 2,600 teenagers aged 15 and 16. They asked them how many times they checked their phones and other digital devices (数字设备)for various reasons, and then monitored them for symptoms of ADHD. After two years, those who had checked their phones the most often were twice as likely as those who checked the least often to show signs of ADHD.
Writing in the JAMA medical journal, the scientists said, “Modern media devices immediately inform users when new text messages, social media postings, or video game play invitations arrive. Exposure(接触) to such information may draw attention away from important tasks. Frequent distraction(分心) could interrupt the development of constant attention and organization skills.”
They believe constant access to instant entertainment also has an impact. Researcher Professor Adam Leventhal said all previous researches had focused on the link between ADHD and televisions. “What’s new is that previous studies on this topic were done many years ago when social media, mobile phones, tablets and mobile apps didn’t exist. We can say with confidence that teens who are exposed to higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future,” he said.
Leventhal believes the findings help fill a gap in understanding how new mobile media devices and seemingly limitless content pose a mental health risk for children. And the findings serve as a warning.
British scientists welcomed the findings. But Professor Andy Przybylski of the Oxford Internet Institute said, “The study relies on survey responses provided by the students in question. It is not clear whether teachers or parents would rate the children similarly or whether the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related with either actual behavior or higher quality survey items.”
28. How did the researchers conduct the study
A. By monitoring 2,600 teenagers with ADHD.
B. By controlling different teens’ time spent on social media.
C. By tracking the participants for two years.
D. By analyzing data from previous researches online.
29. What does Leventhal think of the exposure to higher levels of digital media
A. It will create higher ADHD risks.
B. It will cause diverse ADHD symptoms.
C. It will weaken teenagers’ confidence.
D. It will have a major influence on organization skills.
30. What does Professor Andy Przybylski think of the study
A. It provides a better understanding of the media. B. It should have focused on parents’ responses.
C. Its findings are not reliable enough. D. It’s a breakthrough in this field.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The use of digital media is on the rise
B. Teens’ exposure to modern media calls more attention
C. Teens are more and more exposed to ADHD
D. Heavy use of social media may increase Teens’ ADHD risks
D
The terms “global warming” and “climate change” are used by many, seemingly interchangeably. But
do they really mean the same thing
Scientists shaped the history of the terms while attempting to accurately describe how humans continue to alter the planet. Later, political strategists adopted the terms to influence public opinion.
In 1975, geochemist Wallace Broecker introduced the term “climate change” in an article published by Science. In 1979, a National Academy of Sciences report used the term “global warming” to define increases in the Earth’s average surface temperature, while “climate change” more broadly referred to the numerous effects of this increase, such as sea-level rise and ocean acidification(酸化).
During the following decades, some industrialists and politicians launched a campaign to sow doubt in
the minds of the American public about the ability of fossil-fuel use, deforestation and other human activities to influence the planet’s climate.
Word use played a critical role in developing that doubt. For example, the language and polls expert Frank Luntz wrote a memo encouraging the use of “climate change” because the phrase sounded less scary than “global warming,” reported the Guardian.
However, Luntz’s recommendation wasn’t necessary. A Google Ngram Viewer chart shows that by 1993 climate change was already more commonly used in books than global warming. By the end of the next decade both words were used more frequently, and climate change was used nearly twice as often as global warming.
NASA used the term “climate change” because it more accurately reflects the wide range of changes to the planet caused by increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The debate isn’t new. A century ago, chemist Svante Arrhenius started one of the first debates over the potential for humans to influence the planet’s climate. Arrhenius calculated the capability of carbon dioxide to trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, but other chemists disagreed. Some argued that humans weren’t producing enough greenhouse gases, while others claimed the effects would be tiny. Now, of course, we know that whatever you call it, human behavior is warming the planet, with grave consequences ahead.
32. Why did politicians use the two terms “global warming” and “climate change”
A. To sway public opinion of the impact of human activities on Earth.
B. To more accurately describe the consequences of human activities.
C. To win more popular votes in their campaign activities.
D. To assure the public of the safety of existing industries.
33. As used in a National Academy of Sciences report, the term “climate change” differs from “global
warming” in that________
A. it sounds less vague B. it looks more scientific
C. it covers more phenomena D. it is much closer to reality
34. What did industrialists of the late 20th century resort to in order to mislead Americans
A. Made-up survey results.
B. Hired climate experts.
C. False research findings.
D. Deliberate choice of words.
35. What is the author’s final conclusion
A. Global warming is the more accurate term.
B. Accuracy of terminology matters in science.
C. Human activities have serious effects on Earth.
D. Politics interferes with serious scientific debate.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
【答案】参考范文:
My class organized a discussion on students’ preference for the university in home province or in others, which led to a heated group discussion in our class.
Many students held that going to a university in other provinces can generate various benefits. Not only can it provide great assistance in developing the students’ independent living skills, but also more opportunities to make friends extensively.
In contrast, some classmates declared their viewpoint almost the opposite. First, it is advisable to live in a familiar environment, for students can study more wholeheartedly without too much distractions from outside. Besides, the expenses such as traveling costs, living expenditures and so on can be greatly cut.
From my perspective, it is difficult to reach an absolute consensus on the topic. If the choice can realize one’s life goal and make contributions to the society, there is no denying that it is an optimal one.(150字)
