Hosseini had no inhibitions (抑制 ) to make his complaints about some inspirational viral Internet
content, videos about deaf children for the first time to hear. “The main problem is that it tends to highly
recommend simple solutions which reflects only a few moments of the life of a disabled person,” Hosseini,
英语学科试题卷 第 2 页 共 8 页
a star model who is deaf, said.
Kids with access to great measures that regain hearing, he said, are “often from well-off families who
are very fortunate to have the money to be capable of purchasing the technology needed as well as the
training, and also can afford the hours needed for it.” But that’s not the reality for a lot of other ordinary
children who are deaf, let alone persons of all ages who are hard of hearing.
Nearly 80 million deaf people around the world adopt sign language but not more than 2 percent of
them have access to education in sign language. Hosseini, growing up in an entirely deaf family and
attending a school for the deaf, praises the advantages of learning and using sign language. “By speaking
sign language, we had direct access to communication, to language and to love.”
It was only after he got his mother’s permission to attend public school in the sixth grade that he was
deprived of American Sign Language— and began to feel he was isolated. The feeling influenced his
self-esteem and resurfaced when he joined the cast of “Promising Shining Model”. He said, “It was just me
and a group of other models that I was competing against in the house. I tried to teach them sign, but few of
them showed interest in learning it.”
There was even a time when Hosseini intended to give up. But what he has been expecting is to make
people who are deaf turn up in the media more often, which didn’t happen when he was growing up. “I
want to take the chance to work with “Promising Shining Model” to really pave a new road,” he said.
21. What’s Hosseini’s attitude towards the videos about deaf children
A. Critical. B. Ambiguous. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
22. According to Paragraph 2, what is the reality for many deaf children
A. They have wasted a lot of money on their hearing.
B. They are offered new technology to help them out.
C. They lack good measures to restore their hearing.
D. They are asked to spend time receiving training.
23. Which of the following can be inferred from Paragraphs 4 and 5
A. Separated as he felt, his self-respect had not been wounded at all.
B. It was from his own experience that he was inspired to make the deaf’s presence felt.
C. Regardless of difficulty in using sign language, he’d do his bit for his own convenience.
D. He extremely feared that he’d be left out while working with “Promising Shining Model”.
B
Are you diligently exercising but seeing no result around your midsection (上腹部) It’ s not just you.
Two new studies may explain why many people who begin exercise programs often lose little to no weight
in the long run.
In the first study, published in the online science journal PLoS One, researchers compared the daily
energy consumption of Westerners and the Hadza, a population of hunter-gatherers living in northern
Tanzania. Many believe modern Westerners burn fewer calories than in the past because their lives have
become more sedentary (久坐的). The Hadza, who are generally very thin, hunt and look for food without
modern tools such as vehicles or guns. Men walk about seven miles each day, while women walk about
half that.
What was surprising was that although the Hadza seem to be more active, the researchers found little
英语学科试题卷 第 3 页 共 8 页
difference in calories burned between the Hadza and the Westerners.
The second study, published in Obesity Reviews, analyzed the effect of exercise interventions on body
composition. The researchers found that—contrary to popular belief—when people exercise but keep their
energy intake constant, their resting metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate actually goes down. Exercises who ate
more calories than they usually do did burn more fat than predicted, but some overate and negated the
effects of their hard work.
These studies suggest two things: exercise programs may not lead to as much calories burn as you
would think, and many people start eating more when they exercise, and they may eat too much.
Bottom line, if you start exercising to lose weight, you won’t succeed with the mentality of “I can eat
anything because I’ll burn it off later.” You will have better results if you choose a healthy diet of whole
grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats while exercising. Although these two studies
show that diet may be more important than exercise for weight loss, don’t discount the other benefits of
exercise, including decreased stress and anxiety, improved mood and reduced risk of cardiovascular (心血
管的) disease, diabetes and some cancers.
24. What dose the two studies show in common
A. Exercises are of great benefit.
B. Exercises make people eat too much.
C. Dieting may be not so helpful for weight loss.
D. Exercises do not necessarily lead to weight loss.
25. What does the underlined word “negated” mean
A. Improved. B. Doubled. C. Denied. D. Aroused.
26. The text is most likely to be found in _____.
A. a science magazine B. a book review C. a health guideline D. a news report
C
In1713, Italian physician Bernardinus Ramazzini described in his book a mysterious set of symptoms
he was noticing among artists: “Of the many painters I have known, almost all I found unhealthy ... If we
search for the cause of the extremely thin and colorless appearance of the painters, as well as the sad
feelings that they are so often victims of, we should look no further than the harmful nature of the paint.”
He was one of the first to make the connection between paint and artists’ health, but it would take
centuries for painters to switch to less-harmful materials, even as medicine gradually found some clues to
the painters’ health problems.
The 1834 London Medical and Surgical Journal describes sharp stomach pains occurring in patients
with no other evidence of intestinal (肠的) disease, thus leading the authors to suspect that this “painter’s
stomachache” was a “nervous affection” of the intestine that occurs when lead “is absorbed into the
system”.
Paints weren’t the only source of saturnism (铅中毒 ) in past centuries, though. Through the 1500s,
lead was widely used in wine to make the wine tastes sweeter. Occasionally, lead was even used as a
medicine. In the Middle Ages, lead could be found in makeup.
Though many kinds of people fell victim to saturnism, the disease was perhaps most widespread
among those who worked with paint. The symptoms of this “stomachache” ranged, but they often included
a pale face, tooth loss, fatigue, painful stomach aches, and so on. In fact, the illness that many famous
英语学科试题卷 第 4 页 共 8 页
artists experienced didn’t just prompt their gloomy works.
Lead poisoning among historical figures is difficult to prove, in part because the condition was not
known or recognized in most of their lifetimes. We can’t know whether the madness, depression, and
illnesses many Renaissance masters experienced can be attributed to their paint or just their physiologies
(生理机能).
27. In his book, Bernardinus Ramazzini described the following symptoms of many painters except _____.
A. being extremely thin B. depressed feelings
C. being always inactive D. pale appearance
28. What can we know about Bernardinus Ramazzini
A. He was an Italian physicist. B. He invented less-harmful materials.
C. He made artists stop using paints. D. He thought paints do harm to health.
29. When may be the connection between paint and artists’ health first established
A. In the 16th century. B. In the 18th century.
C. In the 19th century. D. In the 20th century.
30. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Lead was widely used throughout history in daily life.
B. Saturnism in past centuries came from various sources.
C. All the artists are unhealthy for they use harmful paints.
D. Typical symptoms of artists’ disease may be connected to paints.

Technology fuels our need to stay connected all the time. 31 However, they also make it more

employees while they’re on holiday.
The sender of the email receives a message asking them to get in touch with another employee who’s
on duty, or to re-send the message at a later date. 32 No, says the company spokesman Oliver
Wihofszki. According to him, the response is basically 99% positive because everybody says, “That’s a real
nice thing. I would love to have that, too.”
Dr. Christine Grant is an occupational psychologist at Coventry University in Britain. She’s been
studying workers’ inability to relax when off duty. She says, “In my research I found a number of people
who were burnt out. 33 ”
Employers and employees alike are realizing that you’re more productive if you get the work-life
balance right. 34 He was worried about spending too much time on his smartphone, so he created
an app to monitor his usage. The app warns him if he goes beyond a certain limit.
Perhaps we should all take some time out to consider whether we’re addicted to work, or addicted to
technology, or both. 35

Every year in the first week of my English class, some students inform me that writing is too hard.
They never write, unless it 56 (require). They find the writing process painful and difficult.
How awful it is to be able to speak in a language but not to write in it—especially English, with its
rich vocabulary. Being able to speak 57 not write is like living in an enormous house but never
leaving one small room. When I meet students 58 think they can't write, I know as a teacher my
mission is to show them 59 rest of the rooms. My task is to build fluency and accuracy while 60
(provide) the opportunity in any writing activity to enhance the moral and emotional development of my
students. One great way to do this is 61 having students write in a journal in class every day.
Writing ability is like strength training. Writing needs to be done 62 (day), just like exercise; just
as muscles grow stronger with exercise, writing skills improve quickly with writing practice. I often see a
rise in students' 63 (confident) and performance after only a few weeks of journal writing.
Expressing oneself in writing is one of the most important skills I teach 64 (strengthen) the
whole students. When my students practice journal writing, they are practicing for their future 65
(profession) lives. They build skills so that some day they might write a great novel, a piece of news, or the
perfect love letter.

第二节:读后续写(满分 25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a summer morning. The sun was out in full splendor against a nearly cloudless light blue sky.
“Mamma,” said Susie Dean, a 11-year-old girl, “may I go to the woods and pick berries ” Mrs. Dean
replied, “Yes, but you must take Rover with you.”
Susie swiftly got everything ready, and her mother packed a nice lunch for her. She tied the cover and
fastened a tin cup to it. The little girl called Rover — a great Newfoundland dog, and gave him a tin pail
(锡桶) to carry. “If I bring it home full, Mamma,” she said, “won't you make some berry cakes for tea ”
Away she tripped, singing as she went down the lane and across the pasture. When she got to the
woods, she put her lunch basket down beside a tree and began to pick berries. Rover ran about, chasing a
squirrel or a rabbit now and then, but never straying far from Susie.
The tin pail was not a very small one. By the time it was two thirds full, Susie began to feel hungry
and thought she would eat her lunch. Rover came and took his place at her side the moment she began to
eat. Did Susie give him some of the lunch No. She was in a selfish mood and did no such thing.
“There, Rover, run away!” she said, but Rover stayed near her, watching her steadily with his clear
brown eyes. The meat he wanted so much was soon eaten up, and all he got of the nice lunch was a small
crust of gingerbread that Susie threw away.
After lunch, Susie played for a while by the stream. She repeatedly threw sticks into the water, and
Rover swam in and brought them back. Then she began to pick berries again. She did not enjoy the
afternoon as she did the morning. The sunshine was as bright, the berries were as sweet and plentiful, and
she was neither tired nor hungry. But good, faithful Rover was hungry, and she had not given him even one
piece of meat. She tried to forget how selfish she had been, but she could not do so, and quite early she
started for home.
When she was nearly out of the woods, a rustling in the underbrush attracted her attention. "I wonder
if that is a bird or a squirrel," she said to herself. "If I can catch it, how glad I will be!" She tried to make
her way quietly through the underbrush.

One possible version:
However, she saw a large snake coiled up before her, prepared for an attack! There stood the
11-year-old girl, stiffening with horror. In a flash, she saw Rover springing forward, seized the snake by the
neck . He knocked it against the ground fiercely and repeatedly. Ultimately, the large snake twitched once
and lay motionless, a pool of its blood soaking through the earth beneath. Scared witless, Susie was simply
frozen like a statue staring stupidly at the lifeless snake with wide-open eyes. Suddenly she heard a
whimpering and realized it was hers. Her lips were salty with tears trickling down her face.
"O Rover, my dear good dog!" Susie cried, " How brave you are!” The faithful dog came and
rubbed his head against her hand. Guilt written all over her face, Susie put her arms around his neck, and
burst into tears. "My dearest dog! How sorry I am that I was so selfish!" She was deeply moved by his
guileless devotion, determined to learn to be on her guard against a self-centered spirit and become a more
lovable little girl. Though not completely following her words, Rover understood the tone of her voice and
capered about in great glee, barking and wagging his tail all the way home.

M: You have to try this. It’s delicious.
W: What is it
M: Pepper beef.
W: No, thank you. I don’t eat meat.
M: For what reason
W: Because I love animals — and producing meat is very bad for the environment.
M: People have always eaten meat. Our teeth are designed to eat meat. Why is it bad
W: Raising animals for food produces greenhouse gases all over the world. Also, trees have to be cut down
to provide them with land.
M: So, what do you eat Fish maybe
W: I eat a vegetable-based diet.

W: I think so.
M: Unfortunately, you need to return items within 28 days to get your money back.
W: Oh dear… It was such an expensive coat! So, what happens now Does that mean I’ve lost my money

W: Okay, great. I’ll use it to buy Christmas gifts!

M: How long before we get there, Mom
W: Another 9 hours.
M: Maybe we should have taken the car. We would have gotten there faster.
W: Yes, but I would have been the one driving.

Text 10
M: After considering all suggestions regarding the direction of the film project, we would like to
announce that we have decided to change the film from romantic comedy to drama. I can see the worry and
fear on some of your faces. I understand that there’s not much time left. However, this was done in the
interest of getting the most return for your dollars. In light of the global situation, we will no longer focus
on showing the film in theaters as our main income source, since the number of people attending theaters
has reduced by a huge amount. This situation shows that making a romantic film isn’t a good choice, since
people seldom watch this kind of movie in a public location with others now. On the other hand, the new
plot is much better for the current situation. You can review all the details in the package you have in front
of you. The release date will also be postponed to early spring, but the money put in is expected to remain
the same. I truly thank you for your understanding. Despite the difficulties, I believe we can still make
significant profit on this film thanks to the director and actors we are working with. They are some of the
best in the industry.
