Mom and I were putting the finishing touches on dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish cabinet, she went into the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.
When she had set all six places, she stood back and sighed, "Oh, Grandma, your plates are so beautiful. Ours are all alike!" We had a good laugh at her innocent remark, but as I think back to all those years ago, I believe she was right. Those plates were beautiful.
Mom worked for the local council on aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the litlle things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil, and then deliver then to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.
This was about ten years before microwave ovens became common so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job, and Mom continued after Dad's death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.
When I was cleaning out Mom's house after her death, I kept one as a souvenir(纪念品). That plate is a sweet reminder of the lessons of generosity and caring for one's neighbor that were modeled for me by my parents.
1. Why did the author think those plates beautiful
A. They were not all alike.
B. They were little Jessica’s pride.
C. They were collected from different places.
D. They were symbols of the parents' kindness.
2. What did the author's mother do to earn a living in the 1970s
A. Be a housewife.
B. Run Meals on Wheels.
C. Deliver food to houses.
D. Do housework for the old.
3. Why did the author's mother make to-go meals
A. It was her job.
B. She was good at cooking.
C. She wanted to help beyond her duty.
D. Her family didn't have enough to eat.
4. What is the best title for the text
A. Plates of Sympathy
B. A Precious Souvenir
C. Services for the Senior
D. A Kind-hearted Mother
C
Part drama, part dark comedy, the film To the Bone talks about a young woman's struggle with anorexia(厌食症). Though the film has already got generally positive reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, it has caused a hot debate about whether it could be harmful to those with eating disorders.
Critics of the film have focused on the leading role Lily: a thin, young, white woman with anorexia. They think there're some plots that have made eating disorders look like trends instead of life-threatening illnesses. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anorexia has the highest mortality rate (死亡率) of any mental illness. Thirty million Americans struggle with eating disorders at some point in their life.
Director Marti Noxon based the film on her own battle against anorexia. She was aware of the film's potential to have harmful effects and then tried to be really careful in the way she showed how Lily looked. "You want to help other people understand something that they've never experienced, but you also want people who have experienced it to feel understood and seen," she added. "We are balancing a lot. I want to avoid the idea that the perfectionism of anorexics is their most obvious character."
The film caught the attention of Liana Rosenman, who founded Project HEAL, an organization that helps eating disorder sufferers afford treatment. "I think it is very powerful," Rosenman said. "There is a sense of humor and wisdom in it as well as just understanding what it's like to have an eating disorder." Project HEAL recently played To the Bone in New York and Los Angeles, but it has faced sharp criticism from members of their community on social media.
1.What do we know about the film To the Bone from Paragraph 1
A.It tells of the growth story about a girl. B.People have no interest in it.
C.It is popular among young people. D.It has received mixed comments.
2.What do Noxon's words suggest
A.She admitted the film is harmful to people.
B.She tried hard to make the film benefit people.
C.All those suffering from anorexia want to be perfect.
D.People who haven't experienced anorexia can't understand it.
3.What's Rosenman's attitude towards the film
A.Supportive. B.Negative. C.Uncertain. D.Unconcerned.
4.Where's the passage probably from
A.A medical magazine. B.A health column.
C.A film review. D.A newspaper report.
D
We smile because we are happy, and we frown because we are sad. Recent studies suggest that our emotions are driven by their related facial expressions.
This February psychologists at the University of Cardiff in Wales found that people whose ability to frown is lessened by botox injections(肉毒杆菌注射) are happier, on average, than people who can frown. The researchers administered an anxiety and depression questionnaire to 25 females, half of whom had received botox injections to stop frowning. The botox injected people reported feeling happier and less anxious in general.
In a related study from March, scientists at the Technical University of Munich found that the botox subjects had much lower activity in the brain circuits(回路) involved in emotional processing and responses—in the amygdala, hypothalamus and other parts of the brain—as compared with controls who had not received treatment.
The concept works the opposite way, too. People who frown during an unpleasant procedure report feeling more pain than those who do not, according to a study published in May 2008 in the Journal of Pain. Researchers applied heat to the forearms of 29 participants, who were asked to either make unhappy, neutral or relaxed faces during the procedure. Those who exhibited negative expressions reported being in more pain than the other two groups.
No one yet knows why our facial expressions influence our emotions as they seem to. The associations in our mind between how we feel and how we react may be so strong that our expressions simply end up strengthen our emotions—there may be no evolutionary reason for the connection.
1. What can we know about the result of the study from Paragraph 2
A. The ability to frown should be stopped by injection.
B. Less frowns make people happier.
C. Women love to frown and feel sad.
D. Half women have no ability to feel happy.
2. What did scientists do in the related studies
A. They asked the participants to frown or smile.
B. They copied the expressions of the participants.
C. They asked the participants to stay negative.
D. They exposed the participants to heat.
3. What does the underlined word "neutral" in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Humorous. B. Ambitious. C. Caring. D. Calm.
4. What does the passage talk about
A. Facial expressions influence our emotions.
B. Facial expressions are driven by emotions.
C. Why people feel happy and frown.
D. Botox injection is useful and meaningful.

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when she faced a problem, she should try another solution instead of giving up. In the following years, Lisa always remembers her father's words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer after growing up. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road.
After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn't give up. One day, at a friend's party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted(针织的)sweater. It wasn't a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches (编织法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself after talking with her for a while. The lady said it was the work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. "Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes," she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweater.
Later Lisa's friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order forty such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.

③ 此处是本段的主题句。根据下文的描述,聪明的人从来不会为"平衡工作和生活"这样的事情伤脑筋。他们似乎会全身心地投入正在做的事,他们努力地走好每一步来让生活更加完美、更加平衡。故G(他们完美地处理家庭、工作和个人业余爱好。)符合语境。故选G。

第二节
答案:①wisely ②about ③that ④misunderstood ⑤Faced ⑥a ⑦trying ⑧which ⑨determination ⑩As/So

②考查固定搭配。be upset about意为"对……感到不安"。

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear Jack,
Knowing that you are interested in Chinese classics, I am more than excited because I am fairly a classical literature lover myself.
I recommend a well-known Chinese book titled Journey to the West to you. The book was written by Wu Cheng'en in the 16th century during Ming Dynasty, which tells a story about Priest Tang and his three animal followers with human characteristics. Seemingly stubborn, weak and incompetent, Priest Tang played an important role in keeping the team united and bringing out people's kindness and humanity. I will send this book to you by airmail tomorrow, so please pay attention to your package.
I am looking forward to your view of this book.
Yours,
Li Hua
