Learning Objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to 1. learn how to talk about illness and health 2. use some expressions properly when seeing a doctor 3. listen for specific information and know some useful tips on how to protect eyes 4. get a general picture of traditional Chinese medicine
Teaching Procedures Activities Aims
Step 1 Lead-In T lists some of the daily health problems and ask Ss whether they know how to show the problems to the doctor and how the doctor would find out their problems when they have to see a doctor. To activate Ss’ prior knowledge. To arouse Ss’ interests and lead in the topic.
Step 2 Speaking 1. T shows an example of a dialogue between a doctor and a patient and asks Ss to find out what questions the doctor asked and what the patient said. 2. T guides Ss to learn what symptoms, dietary habits and doctor’s advice are, and guide them to find out the sentence patterns used in the dialogue. 3. T summarizes the expressions and sentence patterns of doctors and patients for the students. 4. Ss need to make a dialogue in pairs. Ss act as a doctor and a patient to talk about the reasons for illness and ways to deal with the illness. 5. T shows a possible version. To guide Ss to look for specific information. To allow Ss to practise speaking in a certain circumstance. To lead Ss to talk more on the given task. To enable Ss to form an active attitude towards healthy lives.
Step 3 Listening 1. Ss listen to a lecture on how to take care of eyes and complete the notes. 2. T asks Ss to pay attention to the sentence structure(imperatives) of dos and don’ts. 3. Ss listen to the lecture for a second time and answer questions. 4. T asks Ss to retell to the listening material based on the words given with complete sentences. 5. T shows a possible version of retelling. To encourage Ss to develop listening skills and strategies. To guide Ss to listen for specific information. To help Ss consolidate their knowledge.
Step 4 Culture Corner 1. T introduces two main systems of treatment and diagnosis to Ss. (i.e. western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine) 2. Ss read the text about traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and answer three questions. 3. T explains key words to Ss. (i.e. treatment, herbal, and medicine) 4. T plays a video about TCM and asks Ss to answer two questions. To enable Ss to have an overall understanding of TCM. To introduce the brief explanation of some key words.
Step 5 Summary & Assignment 1. T summarizes what we learn today. 2. Assign homework for Ss: Finish the exercise on Textbook P91 (B Speak up) To let Ss recall and summarize the lesson. To provide more opportunities for Ss to do teamwork.
