Analysis of the teaching material
[What] The teaching material, from Oxford English Textbook9B, is a travel diary about a girl Vanessa’s skiing experience. Based on the module topic of sport and health, this reading material focuses on an unforgettable sport experience—skiing. The material is suitable for students from Grade 9 to learn. [How] The teaching material consists of two parts—listening and speaking. Students are expected to acquire specific information in table tennis club matches when listening as well as talk about favourite sports and ask directions in speaking. Sentence structures and expressions are required to be used in both parts. [Why] By doing the listening and speaking tasks, the teaching material not only aims to enable students to practice listening and speaking skills, but also encourages students to appreciate the sportsmanship and learn to take up regular exercise in real life. Theme of the lesson is to develop their awareness of doing exercise and understand the true meaning of sport and health in real life.
Analysis of the students
The students from Grade Nine are of intermediate language level. They have some basic ideas about sport and health. They are familiar with the topic and interested in it. They are active and eager to talk about their favourite sport. However, there is still room for enhancement. They probably find it difficult to listen for specific information in listening tasks or to ask directions by using correct expressions and structures.

Review: retelling
Vanessa’s dream was to see some real snow, so during the Christmas holiday, her family took passports and flew over the Pacific to Calgary, Canada. They took a bus to a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies. As the bus climbed through the mountains, she was dying to get out and play with the snow outside. When they reached the resort, they made snowballs and threw them at one another. It was the first experience with snow. The next day, they began a skiing lesson. Vanessa kept falling over at first, but after practicing, she did a good job and had a good time in the end.
