Lesson Plan for Water Talks—Reading
Analysis of teaching material
This reading material centers around a conversation between Dora, a little girl, and a drop of water. The topic is close to students’ daily life, so it is familiar to students, which can easily arouse their interest. The difficulty level is medium, so it’s proper for Junior 1 Ss to read.
Analysis of students
Junior 1 students have a comparatively small amount of vocabulary. Their sense of grammatical rules is not strong. So they may make mistakes in English expressions. But Junior 1 students are full of energy and imagination. As the topic is familiar to them, hopefully, they will present a lively class.
Important and Difficult Points:
Students can find key information to help them understand the whole picture.
Students can understand the writer’s attitude through the words used in the passage.
Students can associate literature with real life and deepen their understanding of real-life situations.
Learning Objectives
After this lesson, students are expected to:
1.Remembering: Memorise key information and the main process of water recycle.
2.Understanding: Understand the deeper meanings beneath words and expressions.
3.Applying: Use different words to deconstruct a key word.

Lead-in 2min Free Talk:introduce a new friend Drizzle, a drop of water. Video time: show a video about daily use of water, and ask some questions. Introduce the background information of water shortage. Enjoy the video, brainstorm and discuss. Ss can concentrate and recall the related vocabulary with the help of the video. Ss can warm up quickly through the Q&A task. Ss can relate real life to the present topic.
Pre-reading 2 mins Let Ss read the title and the pictures, and then ask the questions: What do you think I would say to the girl Look at the title and the pictures and answer the questions. Ss have a prediction of what the text is about.
While- reading 8 mins Fast reading Task1: The map below shows the water’s journey. Read the story and write the names of the different places on the map with the words from the box. (play the water cycle video) Read the passage quickly and finish the map. Ss can get a general understanding of the text and find out the process of water cycle.
Careful reading Task2: Read the article again carefully. Think and discuss the questions with your partner. 1) What was Dora doing when the tap was on 2) What qualities or characteristics of water can you find 3)What is the right attitude towards water Task3: Word Deconstruction From the qualities and characteristics we found about water, we can explain “water” in another way. Read the text carefully. Find out the answers to the questions. 3) Think and deconstruct water with other words. Ss can understand the details of the text. 2)Ss can comb their thoughts of the main lines of the text. 3) Ss can train their deeper thinking and reading strategies.
Post- reading 8 mins Deep thinking & Creative thinking 1.Find out valuable qualities of water. 2.Make a poster of how to save water. Think, Imagine, discuss, and find out famous sentences with water in them. Finish the poster through cooperation. Ss can develop their logical thinking, creative thinking and critical thinking through finishing the tasks of high autonomy. Students can improve mutual understanding through cooperation.
Homework Group project: In the background of water shortage, try to make a video about the relationship between human beings and water resource, including current situation and proper solutions. Ss can apply what they’ve learnt in class to finish the homework, and make full use of their own activeness.
Self- Assessment Design and hand out the chart.(see appendix) Finish the chart. Ss can review what they’ve learnt in class.
