Grammar
Learning objects
1. To learn about the definition and structure of adverbial clauses of time (when).
2. To be able to use adverbial clauses of time (when) to describe when something happens.
3. To be able to use ‘used to do’ to talk about what we usually did in the past.
When I was eight, I got a book about stars. That was the beginning of my lifetime hobby. I used to go outside with mum on clear nights and look at the sky.
When talking about our hobbies, we can always recall when and how we first fell in love with them. Parents are usually the best guides to help us develop our interests. Most of us have got the same experiences as Patrick Moore:
We can use several sentences with ‘when’ to answer the questions which remind us of important memories in our lives.
How old were you when you went to kindergarten
When did you ride a bicycle without any support
When did you go fly a kite with your parents
When I was eight, I got a book about stars.
When the girl got older, she sailed the boat herself.
We can use the conjunction when to form an adverbial clause of time. It links two clauses into one sentence.
Adverbial clauses of time (when)
An adverbial clause of time shows when something happens. It is usually introduced by time adverbs. Examples are: when, before, after, as, while, until, as soon as, since, no sooner than, etc.
