Make a Difference with Your Photography
Take the chance to make a real difference with your photography and contribute to One Minute on Earth, a project aiming to help street children around the world.
We all live on the planet Earth, in different time zones and different parts of the world. When you read this, it will be night in one part of the world and morning somewhere else. A sunset and a sunrise is always there at any minute on Earth.
In 2015 on the 7th of April at 13:00 (New York time), 200 photographers all around the world clicked on the button of their cameras all within the same minute on Earth. From all these amazing landscape photos and stories, a photo-book was made which was sold to raise money for charity.
100% of this profit was donated to the Ashalayam Deutschland organisation which used this money to support a street children centre in Kolkata, India. You can still buy this book from our website, which will help us continue to support the kids.
We plan to hold this event annually, with the next one scheduled on June 21st, 2017 at 21: 00 (New York time). Money raised from the sale of the new photo-book will go to a home in South Africa where 75 parentless children live. This year's event will include not only landscape photos but also street photos. The main rule is that the sky must be shown in the photo, so all can see at what time it was shot when this year's One Minute on Earth got to you.

High school was a hard time for me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout(选拔) for the school team because I didn't know anyone. One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time. The coach Mr Colbath had been watching me make various baskets and was pretty impressed with my moves.
He came up to me and asked me who had taught me to play like that I told him that my dad had taught me how to play basketball. He asked me if he would see me at the tryout on Friday, but I said no and told him why. He told me to have a try because I played very well and would maybe make some friends on the court. After thinking for a few minutes, I finally decided to have a try.
On the day of the tryout, the coach came, found me and helped me practise before the tryout. He helped me a lot and I did very well at the tryout and many members of the team were quite impressed. I did make the team and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court. He helped me do my math which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently.
I will never forget Mr Colbath. He really inspired me and changed my life. I would not be the person that I am today if he had not taken such an interest in me when I was in high school.

In one of the old buildings near our school, one could see an old man sitting by a large window on the first floor. His name was James. During the three years at school, I had hardly ever found him missing from his usual position.
He was a high-ranking government official and lived happily with his wife. Once there was a bus accident, in which a number of passengers were seriously injured and were taken to the hospital for treatment. James was responsible for the rescue operation. It was a big hospital, but James was shocked to notice how ill-equipped it was. There were no enough life-saving drugs and life-supporting equipment. The injured and their companions had to struggle there. James attempted to help. However, though he emptied his pockets, many of them died that day.
That was a turning point in his life. He made a decision to devote his life to helping others, particularly the poor and needy patients and their companions. He began spending much of his income on these people. Since this required a lot of time and energy, he found it difficult to fulfill his official duties and therefore chose to retire, which, in turn, reduced his income considerably.
His wife was deeply worried. Most of the time, James was out and paid least attention to home affairs. Meanwhile, as he was spending a lot helping others, she had to struggle even to meet the household expenses. Though she was not opposed to his helping the poor, she urged him not to overlook his own life and home, but it had no effect on him. One day they had a heated argument and in the end she left him, never to return. Though he continued with his work, this was a great blow and did serious harm to his health and enthusiasm and he was soon forced to stay indoors. That was when he took his position by the window, spending his time looking outside.
A few weeks after my graduation, I returned to school, only to find the buildings gone. I heard that they were torn down. All the people left except James. He refused to go and the next morning, he was found at his usual place by the window, dead.
1.What changed James' view towards life
A.The difficulties in his career. B.The deaths in the bus accident.
C.The bad conditions in the hospital. D.The responsibilities in the operation.
2.James chose to retire in order to _________.
A.take care of the injured passengers B.find a better job to increase his income
C.spare more time and energy to help others D.stay away from the difficult official duties
3.James' wife left because ________.
A.she was strongly against his deeds
B.James paid too little attention to his work
C.her work to support their daily life was too tiring
D. James failed to keep a balance between charity and home
4.The underlined word "this" in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A.his decision to retire B.the departure of his wife
C.the argument with his wife D.his devotion to helping others

Born in a fishing village in Japan, Fujiyama, 25, recalls a childhood controlled by health concerns. Debtors told his parents that he had a hole in his heart and "they didn't think I had a lot longer to live". But during a later visit to the doctor, his family learned the hole had closed. "Somehow I was cured and I became a normal kid," Fujiyama says. "And I had a second chance."
During his second year at the University of Mary Washington, he volunteered in Honduras with a campus group and was struck by the extreme poverty he saw—barefoot children collecting cans and sleeping in the streets. Fujiyama realised he could help give other children their own second chance.
Today, his organisation, Students Helping Honduras, brings education and community projects to children and families in need.
He started by telling his friends about his experience and collecting spare change at his two campus jobs. "When I had my very first meeting, only two people showed up," he says. "I knew I had to keep fighting." He persuaded his younger sister, Cosmo, to join the cause. "She's dynamite," he says. "When she talks in front of a crowd, she can move mountains. Knowing that she was behind it, I knew I could do anything." Since 2006, the siblings' organisation has grown to 25 campuses and raised more than $ 750,000 to fund projects, including the construction of two schools and the establishment of scholarships to help young women attend college.
Fujiyama says students are deeply committed to the organisation. They raise money and then travel to Honduras to help building houses. While Fujiyama spends his summers in Honduras working alongside volunteers, he spends a large portion of the year on the road visiting colleges to raise funds. Cosmo Fujiyama, 23, lives in Honduras full time to coordinate(协调) the group's building efforts on the ground.
Students Helping Honduras is working with community members of Siete de Abril to build a new village. Many of the families lost their belongings in Hurricane Mitch in 1998. A lot of them didn't have access to clean water or health care, and they didn't have a school. Fujiyama's group helped build 44 homes in the village named "Sunshine Village". The organisation is also raising funds to build a water tower, an eco-friendly sanitation system and a library.
1.At the beginning of his organisation, ________.
A.Fujiyama was supported by many friends B.Fujiyama had little idea of Honduras
C.things didn't go on smoothly D.many famous people joined in
2.We can infer that Fujiyama is a __________ man.
A.diligent B.mean C.cheerful D.sympathetic
3.The underlined word "siblings" can be replaced by ________.
A.brother and sister's B.brothers' C.friends' D.couple's
4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.Help the People in Need
B.Students Lend a Hand in America

For many years, I had a recurring(反复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
"Hurry, you'll be late for school," my mother called to me.
"I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books "
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle(通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford my tuition(学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: "There goes my diploma."
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis(幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. "That's the answer," I said to myself. Linda always felt better in the evening, so I would just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment(入学) forms when the secretary said: "Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school "
I laughed, "There's no way! I'm 55!" But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. "This is only an experiment," I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game.

Linda and I saw each other through all these years.

A.答案:1-3 ABC
根据文章第一段中的“...One Minute on Earth, a project aiming to help street children around the world.”以及第三段末句“...a photo-book was made which was sold to raise money for charity.”
根据第三段末句“...a photo-book was made which was sold to raise money for charity.”以及最后一段第二句 “Money raised from the sale of the new photo-book will go to a home in South Africa where 75 parentless children live.”
由the 2017 event可定位至文章最后一段,由the main rule可定位至该段最后一句“The main rule is that the sky must be shown in the photo…”,由此可知它的主要规则是天空必须出现在照片中,故选C项。
One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time.(有一天,一切都改变了,我错过了回家的巴士,决定在学校操场上投篮来消磨时间。)"
I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout(选拔) for the school team because I didn't know anyone. (我喜欢篮球,但不敢参加校队的选拔,因为我一个人都不认识。)"可知,作者不参加选拔赛最有可能的原因是他在学校里一个人也不认识。故选C。
3.词义猜测题。根据下文"and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court"可知,接下来的几年里,无论是场内还是场外,教练给予了作者许多帮助。 故选A。

Though she was not opposed to his helping the poor, she urged him not to overlook his own life and home...

Dear friends,
On December 14th, 2015, Tu Youyou, a Chinese scientist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in Sweden for the discovery that helped cut the malaria death rates.
As a scientist, she faced the challenge bravely and devoted her whole life to her research. It was hard work and determination that brought her to success. In spite of her great achievements, she remained modest, caring little about being famous or rich. What a great woman!
Her devotion to work moved me so deeply that I am determined to learn from her and work harder at my lessons so that I may make great contributions to our country.
Thanks for listening.
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
It was exciting to go to school again, but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hard-working student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.
Paragraph 2:
Linda and I saw each other through all these years. When I was down, Linda encouraged me, "Mom, you can't quit now!" And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be the class speaker, and I got a $ 3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.
