In many countries of the world, people can confidently tell you the meaning of their town or city, but most people who live in Manchester, Oxford or Birmingham would not be able to explain what the name of their city means. The name of every British town and city, however, has a long history.
Two thousand years ago, most people living in Britain were Celts. Even the word "Britain" is Celtic(凯尔特语). Then the Romans arrived and built camps which became cities called "castra". This is why there are so many place names in England which end in "-Chester" or "-caster"—Manchester, for example.
The Romans never reached Wales or Scotland, and many place names there are Celtic. For example, Welsh place names that begin with "Llan" come from the Celtic word for church.
After the Romans left Britain, it was attacked by the Anglo-Saxons who were from the area of Europe that is now Germany and Holland. The names of their villages often ended in "-ham" or "-ton". Some got their names from the leader of the village. So Birmingham, for example, means "Beormund's village".
The Anglo-Saxons were farmers and the landscape was very important to them, so we have villages called Upton (the village on a hill—a good place to build a village) and Moreton (the village by a lake, where floods could make life hard). Place names that end in "-ford" (a place where you could cross a river) also describe the location of Anglo-Saxon villages.
Finally, in 1066, England became Norman—the Normans gave us the place name "grange'', which means iarm.
And how about London Experts cannot agree. The Romans called the city Londinium but they were not the first inhabitants(居民). People once believed that the United Kingdom's capital city got its name from the castle of a King called Lud but this is very unlikely. Our best guess today is that the name comes from a Celtic word meaning a fast-flowing river. Like a number of British place names, its history is lost in time.
1. The origin of British place names is unfamiliar to many local people because of _____.
A. the death of local languages
B. the long lost history of the names
C. their lack of interest in it
D. the frequent changes to the names
2. According to the article, Stratford is most likely a town _____.
A. on a hill B. near a castle
C. beside a river D. with a church
3. Which of the following shows the correct order of the arrival of inhabitants in Britain
A. The Celts-The Romans-The Normans-The Anglo Saxons
B. The Celts—The Romans—The Anglo Saxons—The Normans
C. The Romans-The Celts-The Anglo Saxons-The Normans
D. The Romans-The Anglo Saxons-The Celts-The Normans
4.What does London mean in Celtic
A. River. B. Londinium. C. Lud. D. Castle.

Some of Vincent van Gogh's most famous works are his sunflower series. He painted a total of twelve of these canvases(油画), although the most commonly referred to are the seven he painted while in Arles in 1888 1889. He had painted the other five while in Paris in 1887.
While Vincent himself never actually stated why he liked the sunflowers in particular, references to them are made in his many letters, which help give us some ideas. In a letter to his sister dated 21 August 1888, he talked of his friend Gauguin coming to live with him in Arles. Then he went on to say that he would like to decorate the whole studio with nothing but sunflowers.
Vincent had quite an attachment to the flowers personally. In the year before his death he wrote to his brother, "It is a kind of painting that rather changes in character, and takes on a richness the longer you look at it… You know the peony (牡丹) is Jeannin's, the hollyhock(蜀葵) belongs to Quost, but the sunflower is somewhat my own." In many of his letters he spoke glowingly(热心地) of the richness of colour that he saw in the sunflowers, and his desire to paint them quickly before they faded.
But whether Vincent painted the sunflowers because he was trying to please Gauguin, or because he really loved the sunflowers for themselves as they brought him joy in colour, he certainly left us works of art to enjoy.
1._______ showed that Vincent liked the sunflowers best.
A.His many letters B.12 canvases C.The hollyhock D.The peony
2.The best title of this passage would probably be _________.
A.Vincent van Gogh's Famous Works B.Vincent van Gogh Really Loved Sunflowers
C.Vincent van Gogh Was Kind to His Friend D.Vincent van Gogh's Really Interesting Life
3.According to Vincent van Gogh's letters we can know that ________.
A.Gauguin was Vincent van Gogh's close friend
B.Vincent would like to live with Gauguin all the time
C.Vincent's studio was full of sunflowers every day
D.Gauguin was clearly interested in sunflowers
4.We can know from the third paragraph that ________.
A.some sunflowers belong to Vincent van Gogh
B.sunflowers are more beautiful than hollyhock
C.Vincent liked the colour of the sunflowers best
D.Vincent liked painting all kinds of flowers

The history of pop art begins with abstract art. Pop art emerged from the foundation of abstract art in the 1950s, first gaining recognition in Great Britain, then establishing itself in the United States in the 1960s.
In the 1930s and 1940s, abstract art was greatly popular, but people began to hate this art form. Most abstract art produced in this era could be found in art galleries or the homes of the elite(名流), not in the homes of everyday people. Pop art sprung onto the scene as the people's art.
Some art critics say pop art is a rebellion against abstract art; others say it is an extension of abstract art. You can see elements of abstract art in many pop art prints, especially those that consist of a collage of images. However, some pop art pieces have nothing to do with abstract art, looking more like a photo of a popular consumer item, which impressed people deeply.
Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi were two of the first contemporary pop art pioneers recognised in Great Britain. They were a part of the Independent Group, an organised group of British artists who wanted to challenge ruling modernist approaches to culture. They recognised the value of modern advertising and comic book images. They used these popular images in art as a social commentary, often building irony and humour into their artworks, thus creating a new form of art. These pieces were mass-produced and sold at affordable prices.
When pop art took off in the United States, it expanded to include a celebration of kitsch and the common images found in movies and television. Andy Wharhol is perhaps the most famous American pop art artist, known for his prints of the actress Marilyn Monroe, the singer Elvis Presley and of Gampbell's soup cans. Andy Wharhol was inspired by images from advertisements and common consumer items. He also made a series of paintings which showed images of car accidents.
1.Why did people dislike abstract art
A.People found it hard to understand. B.Ordinary people couldn't afford it.
C.People disliked enjoying it in galleries. D.It wasn't based on everyday life.
2.What impression do pop art works leave on people
A.They are a rebellion against abstract art. B.They have many elements of abstract art.
C.They are created so real. D.They are products of advertisers.
3.The Independent Group was set up to ________.
A.introduce a new art form to the world B.develop modern advertising further
C.create new comic book images D.make British culture better known
4.What is the writer's attitude towards pop art
A.Supportive. B.Uninterested. C.Objective. D.Negative.

"The words were full of encouragement and positive energy, and showed an uncommon open-mindedness among women at the time," Zhao said.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a bitterly cold and dark day in December. I was walking home from work, hungry and worn out after my long day. My team was due to complete our big project before we left for our winter vacation, but our boss delivered bad news that our client had contacted him and demanded a major revision on the project before they would accept it. The whole team was desperate—we were so close to finishing and now we would most likely have to work over and miss the entire vacation.
So caught up in my anxious thoughts was I that I failed to watch where I was walking until I stepped, with a dramatic splash(溅起), off the sidewalk and into a giant, half-frozen pool of water at the side of the road. I could feel the icy water into my shoes and socks, slowly soaking up into my trousers legs around my ankles. I sighed deeply and almost cried—I was having, as my grandmother always used to say, "one of those days when nothing goes your way."
A wave of loneliness filled me. I loved my job and my coworkers and most days when I was satisfied with my life but now, especially around the holidays, the reminders that I didn't have a partner or children like my sister or some of my coworkers did fill me with sadness. As I looked down sadly at my unpleasant situation, I saw a brief spot of movement out of the corner of my eye. There, attached to a cold piece of cardboard in the middle of the pool, was a small patch of grey fur.
As I watched, the little spot moved again, before letting out an outsized cry of sorrow and grief, so loud was it that you would think it came from a creature five times the size. It was a cat!
Paragraph 1:
Slowly and carefully so as not to frighten it, I bent down and picked up the cat.

Paragraph 2:
My sister is a nurse, and therefore the family expert on caring for animals.

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear Committee members,
I wish to make a suggestion about starting a school art gallery.
There are many students who are good at painting in our school. The school art gallery can provide these students with a very good platform to display their own paintings, offer them a chance to admire the artistic achievements and the development of school culture as well as widen their knowledge. If you were to offer such an opportunity to the students who are fond of art, I believe they would give you a big surprise.
I would be more than happy if my suggestion could be considered.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Slowly and carefully so as not to frighten it, I bent down and picked up the cat. The cat protested loudly as I lifted it into the air, twisting and biting at my fingers with surprising strength. I was glad to see that it was so energetic—I hoped that meant it would be more likely to survive. Ignoring the kitten's protests, I carefully tucked it against my chest inside my coat to try and keep it warm. 【高分句型一】My ignorance made me anxious—I didn't know what I was doing and I didn't want to harm the poor creature. But, after another cry of protest, the cat became calm and went to sleep.(作者想帮助小猫让它在寒冬中存活下来)
Paragraph 2:
My sister is a nurse, and therefore the family expert on caring for animals. I hurried to call and ask for her advice. She calmly and efficiently told me what to do as I hurried home, stopping briefly at a corner store to buy some supplies she insisted I would need. When I finally reached my apartment, I dried the soaked cat and fed it the food I had bought. The cat still looked at me with great suspicion, but the food seemed to be winning it over. As the cat once more fell asleep, now happy and warm, I smiled. 【高分句型二】After all perhaps I would not have a lonely vacation this year.(作者向姐姐求助并把小猫带回家的过程)
