In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister was very ill. He had been wounded by a sick dog that had rabies, a very dangerous disease. His parents were told that there was probably only one man who could save Joseph’s life—Louis Pasteur.
When Pasteur was a young boy in France, he spent many hours every day with the chemist (药剂师) who lived in his small town. At that time, the chemist had to make all the medicines himself. Young Louis enjoyed watching the chemist as he worked and helped those people who came to him each day.
As a schoolboy, Pasteur worked slowly and carefully. At first, his teachers thought that young Louis might be a slow learner. Through elementary school, high school, and college, Pasteur worked in the same thoughtful way. Then he became a college professor (教授) and a scientist, and he continued to work very carefully.
Pasteur was studying about the germs (细菌) that cause rabies when Joseph Meister became ill. In fact, Pasteur believed he had a medical treatment for rabies, but he had never given it to a person before. At first, Pasteur was afraid to treat Joseph, but the poor child was dying. Pasteur gave Joseph an inoculation (预防接种) every day for ten days. Slowly, the child became better.
During his lifetime, Pasteur studied germs and learned how they cause diseases in animals and people He developed vaccinations (疫苗) that prevent many of these diseases. Over the last two decades (十年), he Earth has seen an increase in vegetation (植被) and China and India are leading the increase in greening on land. The result comes mostly from tree planting programs in China and intensive agriculture (集约农业) in both countries.
Researchers from Boston University found that global green area has increased by 5% since the early 2000s, an area equal to the size of Amazon rainforest. Among the increased area, China and India contribute to about 33%, especially China, with 25% itself. China’s great contribution came mostly from its programs to protect and expand forests, which is about 42%. These programs were developed in an effort to reduce the effect of desertification (沙漠化), air pollution and climate change.
Another 32% of the greening change in China, and 82% in India, resulted from intensive agriculture of food crops. The land area used to grow crops in China and India has not changed much since the early 2000s. Yet both countries have greatly increased the total green area and food production in order to feed large populations. The lead author Chi Chen of Boston University said,
“That is a surprising finding, since it is generally believed that land degradation (退化) in populous countries is usually more serious.”
Rama Neman, a research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, saw a positive message in the new findings. “Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to fix it,” However, the researchers rang bells as well. They pointed out that the gain did not necessarily (不一定,未必) fill up the loss of natural vegetation in tropical regions (热带地区) like Brazil and Indonesia.
28. What’s the first paragraph mainly about
A. The earth is becoming a green land. B. China and India are forest countries.
C. China and India matter in greening the Earth. D. China and India develop intensive agriculture well.

① Reducing air pollution. ② Increasing rich land for crops.
③ Helping with climate control. ④ Controlling the desertification.
A. ①②③ B. ①③④
C. ①②④ D. ②③④
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Brazil and Indonesia do not protect their forests.
B. The findings discouraged belief of a green world.
C. Humans are creative enough to solve all problems.
D. More efforts are needed to protect natural vegetation.
31. Where does the text probably come from
A. A newspaper. B. A travel brochure.
C. An interview. D. A geography textbook.

If you grew up watching the kid’s television channel Nickelodeon, you will probably understand that there is nothing greater than enjoying its special bright green slime (水晶泥). The week of May 11, astronauts (宇航员) aboard the International Space Station (ISS) joined the slime.
Nickelodeon sent two kilos of its green slime into space in the summer of 2019. The Slime in Space project’s idea was to create an educational trip for teachers to use in class. The green slime was also used to guide astronauts through a series of experiments that were designed to learn more about how slime acts in microgravity (微重力)。
Researchers from Portland State University (PSU) were excited to design the experiments for the project. Mark Weislogel and his partner designed eight shows for NASA astronauts and European Space Agency astronaut aboard to perform.
If you’re wondering what we could hope to learn from sending slime into space, the answer lies in its very name. Slime is slimy. This is because it is a liquid that is thicker than liquids like water. This makes slime act in unexpected ways in the microgravity of the ISS. Improving our understanding of how thicker liquids act in space may help us improve the design of systems that something were designed with Earth’s gravity in mind.
“Interestingly, we consider liquid on Earth as that takes the shape of its container,”Koch tells CNN. “Water just turns into a ball in microgravity, so we’ve had to have a new understanding of different kinds of matter in space. This experiment shows how microgravity can help us understand things on Earth, especially the things we take for granted.”
32. In Paragraph one, Nickelodeon is mentioned ______.
A. to introduce the topic B. to attract the kids
C. to make advertisements D. to share a TV show
33. Why are the experiments with slime designed in space
A. Because they get students interested in space.
B. Because slime takes the shape of its container.
C. Because slime is popular with kids in the TV show.
D. Because they help us understand how slime acts in space.
34. What is Koch’s attitude towards the experiment with slime
A. Puzzled. B. Worried. C. Uninterested. D. Positive.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text
A. Microgravity makes a difference to matters.
