Every day when Glen Oliver orders his morning coffee at the drive-through window of a local cafe, he insists on paying for the order of the person behind him. He also asks the restaurant workers to tell the customer to have a great day, in case they’re not already having one.
Oliver has never made a big deal out of his own generous actions until a letter was published by a news website in November. He found out that he had not just bought someone his breakfast —he had saved a life.
According to the website, someone had written a letter stating that on July 18th, he was planning on committing suicide. The writer said that while he was at the drive-through window, he was planning on going home, writing a note and ending his life. When he went to pay for his coffee and muffin, however, the cashier told him that the man in the SUV in front of him had picked up the tab and told him to have a great day.
“I wondered why someone would buy coffee for a stranger for no reason,” said the writer. “Why me Why today If I were a religious man, I would take this as a sign. This random act of kindness was directed at me on this day for a purpose.”
When the writer arrived home, he couldn’t hold back his tears and started to think about the simple good deed that had affected him so deeply. “I decided at that moment to change my plans for the day and do something nice for someone. I ended up helping a neighbor take groceries out of her car and into the house.”
The writer says that in the months following that fateful event, he does at least one kind thing for others every day. “To the nice man in the SUV, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please know your kind gesture has truly saved a life,” he said. “On July 18, 2017, I had the greatest day.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) might be able to spot the next virus to jump from animals to humans, Scottish researchers report.
Identifying diseases before they become a threat to humans is challenging, because only a few of the nearly 2 million animal viruses can infect humans. By developing machine learning models, researchers can analyze genetic patterns of viruses that might infect people. “Our findings show that the zoonotic (动物传染人的) potential of viruses can be inferred to a surprisingly large extent from their genome sequence (基因组序列).” the researchers at the University of Glasgow reported. “By highlighting viruses with the greatest potential to become zoonotic, genome-based ranking allows further ecological and virological characterization to be targeted more effectively.”
The researchers said the models are only a first step in identifying animal viruses with the potential to infect humans, however. Viruses flagged by the models will need laboratory test confirmation before researchers pursue funding for further study. Although these models may predict if viruses might infect humans, that’s only one part of the broader risk. Zoonotic risk is also influenced by how destructive a virus is in humans, as well as its ability to transmit between people, and ecological conditions at the time of human exposure.
The findings were published online in the journal PLoS Biology. Co-author Simon Babayan said these findings add important information to that collected from genetic sequencing of viruses using AI techniques. “The more viruses are characterized, the more effective our machine learning models will become at identifying the rare viruses that ought to be closely monitored and prioritized for vaccine development.” Babayan added.
38.What is the significance of genome-based ranking
A.To identify viruses which have threatened humans.
B.To discover human viruses that can infect animals.
C.To highlight viruses with the slightest chances to become zoonotic.
D.To target ecological and virological characterization more effectively.
39.What can be inferred from the third paragraph
A.The fund for further study has been put in place.
B.There is still a long way to go for AI models to function ideally.
C.Viruses flagged by the models have been confirmed by researchers.
D.Viruses’ transmission ability is the most influential factor for zoonotic risk.
40.What is Simon Bybayan’s attitude towards the findings
A.Positive. B.Ambiguous. C.Indifferent. D.Doubtful.
41.What is the best title for this text
A.AI Models Spot Various Viruses in Nature.
B.AI Models Monitor Vaccine Development.
C.AI Models Predict Potential Zoonotic Viruses.
D.AI Models Cure Potential Zoonotic Diseases.
Charles Darnay was arrested again. Lucie, his wife was very worried.
“This is a desperate time,” said Sydney Carton. “We need to have a friend in the prison that will help us, and I think that Basard here will be that friend.”
“Why should I be your friend ” asked John Basard.
“I could begin telling people that you were and may still be a spy for England, the enemy of France. What do you say ”
“You are my sister’s friend,” Basard argued. “I’m sure you wouldn’t want to upset her.”
“I think the best thing to be done for her is to get rid of her brother,” said Sydney calmly. “I have another reason that you should help me. I think I know your friend in the wine shop.”
“No, no, that’s not possible. He is French!”
“He spoke very good French, but there was something strange about him. I think it may have been Cly.”
Now Basard laughed.
“No, no, Cly has been dead and buried for several years. He was buried in London, I helped to put his body in the coffin, and I can show you his burial certificate.”
Suddenly, Jerry Cruncher stood up, next to Basard.
“If you put him in his coffin, who took him out of it ”
“What do you mean ”
“I mean that he was never in it! All you buried was rocks and earth!”
Sydney Carton rubbed his chin. “If we tell people that you have been talking to another England spy, and one who is supposed to be dead. I am sure that you will go to the guillotine, Basard. What do you say now ”
“What do you want ”
“Can you go in and out of the prison whenever you want ”
“Yes, I can. The guards know me and trust me.”
“Come into the other room with me. I need to talk to you in private now,” said Carton.
Jerry and then Basard were sent out.
Left in the room now were Carton and Lorry, sitting and looking into the fire.

“I have only done my job,” replied Mr. Lorry. “I am just an old bachelor, and nobody will miss me when I die.”
“Lucie will cry for you, and little Lucie will cry for you, too.”

六、七选五
Think about a self-improvement goal you have, like earning a promotion at work or losing weight. You may feel that you are being stopped from achieving your goal. Then what may be holding you back is a “fixed mindset”. Here are some ways to develop a growth mindset.
____46____. When you learn to recognize effort in others, you’re changing the thinking way about abilities. Rather than telling your child “You're so smart!” when they do very well in a math test, say “You studied hard for that and deserved a good grade.” ____47____.
Look around you. If you can't recognize your own ability to improve, look to family members or friends for evidence that effort and willpower pay off. ____48____. If you think naturally “She's obviously good with languages,” reframe your thinking. More likely, she studied hard and practiced often.
Compete with yourself. Caring how we rank is human nature, but caring too much does the opposite and fuels a fixed mindset. ____49____. What's important is not how you compare to others but how you compare to yourself. Are you moving forward and making progress in the areas that you care about If so, that's all that matters.
Learn from failure. When you have a fixed mindset, the voice in your head says, “I didn't make the sale because I'm terrible at it.” ____50____. Could it be that you didn’t prepare enough to answer all the clients, questions What could you have done differently to change the outcome If you think about it hard enough, you'll probably come up with lessons to apply to your next sales opportunity.A.Get expert help
B.Challenge this mindset
C.Praise for effort, not skill
D.We all have our strengths
E.You'll soon have the confidence for the next challenge
F.Acknowledging effort over talent is an important change

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year, thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.
Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.
We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.
When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.
But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.
We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.
Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Three, two, one. Happy New Year!” we screamed the words as loud as possible.

71.Dear John,
I'm delighted to learn that you take great interest in the Spring Festival.
It's traditionally a time when all family members get together and plays a significant role in the life of every Chinese. Therefore, various activities are indispensable for adding the flavor to the festival. We'll have a big feast, gathering around the table and praying for next year's good luck. After the meal, a red packet which contains lucky money will be given to every kid and some lucky words are said to each other. Everything will overflow with happiness then.
I sincerely invite you to come to China and spend the Spring Festival with my family.
Yours,
Li Hua
72.Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes. The icy wind started howling, cutting my face like a sharp knife. We sat down on the ground in Times Square, took off each other’s shoes, and shoved in some hand-warmers. We ate cheese sticks covered in turkey, jumped up and down, and did pretty much anything we could think of to stay warm. The temperature kept dropping, but our spirits never did, at least not enough to make us actually want to leave. We joked and laughed, waiting for the magic moment.
“Three, two, one. Happy New Year!” we screamed the words as loud as possible. The clock struck midnight! Before we knew it, performers were singing, and we were singing along excitedly. With the crowd cheering in a loud collective voice, we finally understood what it felt like to be present at the celebration in person, in such a state of joy, with tens of thousands of people from all over the world. Lily leaned on my shoulder with happiness on her face. Whatever exhaustion and cold we’d previously felt was forgotten, and we knew we had done something amazing together.
