What3words
This free download is one of a growing number of smartphone apps that could mean the
difference between life and death. What3Words divides the world into 3x3 metre squares, giving
each one a unique combination(组合)of three words. This allows emergency services—or anyone
else you give the location to—to reach you. It is used by the vast majority of emergency services in
the UK, not to mention other control centres around the world, and has been praised for saving
thousands of lives.
WhatsApp
Lots of us use WhatsApp for messaging and calling, but did you know it also has a Live
Location feature that can let a loved one know where you are in case you re in danger You simply
press the + key in a chat, select “Location”, and then press “Share Live Location”, which enables
anyone in the chat to see your location in real time for the period you choose.
SkinVision
You will have to pay for this digital skin check app, when necessary or needed, but with about
fifth of skin cancers going undiagnosed(未经诊断) during lockdown, it could be well worth it. You
simply take a photo of any strange-lookingpart of the skin with your phone and you ll then receive a
risk indication(风险迹象)within 30 seconds. This might include a recommendation to see a doctor.
But don t rely on an app to comfort you—if you re worried about a skin problem, go to your doctor.
Stay Alive
With mental health problems on the increase, not helped by the pandemic(大流行病 ), this
suicide(自杀 )prevention app could be extremely helpful. Developed by Grassroots Suicide
Prevention, it offers a wealth of resources, ranging from suggestionsfor staying at home when you
feel extremely lonely and sad, to breathing exercises, to direct links to national and local crisis
resources.
St John Ambulance First Aid
An app like this is more useful for saving someone else s life than your own, but it s a must-
have on your smartphone. It gives advice in dealing with emergencies, including choking, allergic
reactions and performing CPR. You don t have to have an Internet connection in order to use it.

“PLEASE DON T KILL HIM” said Mrs. Reid with tears in her eyes. “I m really sorry,” I said,
hardly able to look at her. A nurse held her hand and tried to comfort her.
“He s been my entire world for 14 years, I don t know what I ll do without him,” she said with
tears in her eyes. She wasn t talking about a person. She was talking about Toby, her King Charles
spaniel. Mrs. Reid had come into hospital after she d fallen. She had Parkinson s disease, meaning
her ability to move was worsening. It was the second time she d fallen in just a few weeks, and this
time she d broken her hip. While the hip had now been fixed, it was clear that she was too frail(脆弱
的)to go home, and the social workers had arranged for her to go into a care home. A neighbor had
been looking after Toby, but with Mrs. Reid no longer going home and as she had no family who
could take him, it looked likely that he d have to be killed. She was begging me to allow her home,
but it was simply too dangerous.
This situation is far from unique. Research has found that each year thousands of dogs are put
down because their owners go into care homes. Over 100,000 have to be rehomed. Thankfully I
spoke to a kindly social worker who eventually found a care home for Mrs. Reid that would allow
her to take To by with her. But these places are few. I think we need to seriously re-examine what s
happening here. It seems completely wrong. There is no doubt that we are a nation of animal lovers.
Many of us consider our pets to be part of the family and there s a fair few of us, I guess, that
actually prefer our pets to a good number of people. Humans have a great ability to draw comfort
高一英语第 4页 (共 10页)
and support from animals. For older people like Mrs. Reid, they are often the important source of
companionship(陪伴) and about a quarter of old people have a pet. Yet when they come into hospital
or a care home, they are denied this relationship.
While the US, France, Norway and Switzerland all have laws forcing housing providers to
accept pets belonging to elderly people, studies have shown that around 70 per cent of care homes in
the UK forbid elderly people from bringing pets. This figure has risen in recent years and is likely to
be due to increasing concerns around “health and safety”. However, research has concluded that they
are “necessary to elderly people s quality of life” and that having to move to care homes without
their pets was psychologically similar to losing their family. It seems outrageous(可耻的)that care
homes—whose purpose is to ensure the elderly people s welfare(福利) —are able to deny them
something which has proven clinical benefits for their health.
26. Who is Toby according to the passage
A. Mrs. Reid s friend. B. Mrs. Reid s son.
C. Mrs. Reid s dog.
D. Mrs. Reid s cat.
27. What happened to Toby finally according to the author
A. Toby was killed by the government.
B. Toby was taken back home by Mrs. Reid s neighbor.
C. Toby was sent away to somewhere far from Mrs. Reid.
D. Toby was still staying with Mrs. Reid thanks to the author.
28. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 3
A. The relationship can last forever.
C. The relationship is taken away from them.
29. Why does the author write this passage
A. To tell a story about Mrs. Reid.
B. They are provided with the relationship.
D. They are ensured of the relationship.
B. To stress the importance of keeping pets.
C. To draw readers attention to a social problem.
D. To show the relationship between animals and humans.
30. What s the author s attitude to the UK s forbidding people from bringing pets to care homes
A. Negative.
B. Doubtful.
C. Supportive.
D. Unclear.

In the spring of 1990, I was at a racing event in Columbus, Ohio, and the guy who was hosting
said, “Hey, do you want to see my new baby ” I said, “Sure.” We went out and there it was, a little
red sports car. I asked if I could sit in it and when I did, I put my left hand on the steering wheel and
my right on the shifter. I said to myself, “It just feels right.”
Soon after, I started seeing billboards and print advertisements. Mazda s motto for the new car
was, “It just feels right.” Total coincidence(巧合). At the time, I was under contract (合约) to race
with Ford Motor Co., and so I always had Ford cars. I didn t need a new car, but I bought one
高一英语第 5页 (共 10页)
anyway—a Miata from its very first model year.
There wasn t anything like the Miata at the time—a new, small, two-seat convertible sports car.
And this one hit every mark. It had cool style, it was affordable, it had durability(耐用), performance,
and economy. I was living in South Florida and it was a perfect place to drive with the top down.
The car loved to go fast. I certainly got some tickets for speeding. It was the kind of car that made
you want to go into garage(车库)so you could say good night to it.
Now, so many years later, I can look back and say that I have never owned any car for more
than three years except this one, which I have owned for over three decades. It amazes me that when
I first saw it, I d never heard of the Miata. Now you see them everywhere, and it has its own
successful racing series, the MX-5 Cup.
About five years ago, I was going to visit my daughter who lived in San Francisco, and I
learned that Tom Matano—who led the design of this car for Mazda—was working in San
Francisco. I made an appointment and I met him. To me, it was like meeting Enzo Ferrari if you are
a Ferrari nut. He turned out to be the most modest, delightful human being, and it was an honor to
get to know him. These days I still drive the Miata to its fullest. Recently I went on a road trip with
one of my favorite girlfriends. We were on a straight road that had no speed limit. I was hauling at
120mph. The car was happy as a camper, as they say, and so was its driver.
31. Which of the following best describes the author s Miata
A. Attractive and tough.
C. Small and traditional.
B. Modern and large.
D. Fashionable and expensive.
32. What can we know about the author from the passage
A. She was the designer of Mazda.
B. She preferred Ford to Mazda.
D. She thought highly of Miata.
C. She once worked with Tom Matano.
33. Why does the author mention Enzo Ferrari in the last paragraph
A. To recommend a new car.
B. To explain her routine.
D. To introduce Enzo Ferrari.
C. To express her excitement.
34. Where is the passage probably taken from
A. A magazine.
B. A guidebook.
C. An advertisement.
D. A booklet.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Becoming a fan of Ferrari
B. “Feeling right” in my Miata
D. Dreaming of having a Mazda
C.“Feeling proud” in my Ford

However, it does not actually solve your problems. Instead of looking for practical
solutions to a stressful situation, your attention is focused on getting quick relief with food. These

Mental health concerns of anxiety eating
Eating to deal with stress and anxiety can easily become an unhealthy habit and may even lead to
eating disorders. If left unchecked, stress eating may progress to binge-eating disorder.

it is neither a healthy nor a permanent solution to deal with a stressful situation. There are still many

Text 10
When Emma Stone was 15, she gave her parents a PowerPoint presentation that was titled
“Project Hollywood.” In it, she tried to persuade them to let her leave high school and move to
Los Angeles to follow her dream of becoming a professional actress. Her proposal worked, and it
wasn’t long before she and her mother took off for Hollywood and started working on a career
that would make her a star.
Stone didn’t find success right away. In between taking online classes and working as a
waitress at a bakery, she did everything that she could. She tried out for every Disney TV show,
but she didn’t get a single part.
Stone’s hard work eventually paid off, and after her first film role in the teen comedy
Superbad, she got bigger and bigger parts. She wasn’t particular about which ones she took —
she played parts in comedies, dramas, and even cartoons. They all helped her build the
experience she’d need for her future leading roles.
