Unit 1 Cultural Heritage
A
Archaeology (考古学) isn't the dusty science it was a generation ago. New technologies that once seemed out of science fiction are now locating buried traces of buildings and revealing the ruins of cities.
For more than a decade, Sarah Parcak and her team have been in the front line of this revolution. They use satellite images to find and explore ancient sites around the globe. Now they're about to take on a new challenge as they focus the GlobalXplorer citizen-science project on India.
In 2017, Parcak launched an online platform, called GlobalXplorer, to crowdsource (众包) the initial assessment of satellite images for signs of cultures from long ago. Anyone in the world with a computer and Internet access could help discover and protect remains of Peru's rich cultural heritage. The results have been surprising. About 80,000 participants from a hundred countries have identified 19,000 sites that were not in Peru's database. The platform for Peru is still running.
If all goes well, the work in India could last for years. “India has had relatively little archaeological work done,” Parcak said. Also, the full extent of India's archaeological work has never been mapped completely. Parcak expects her project to make up that. “Wherever we end up going, the crowd's going to be able to see extraordinary things,” Parcak said.
Thirty-six India's cultural heritage relics are already listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Parcak thinks there could be tens of thousands of as yet unknown sites mapped as part of this project. The discoveries promise to be amazing across the land that has seen a parade of cultures come and go.
In the future, she hopes other countries will contact her to launch their own satellite surveys. The possibilities are huge. Parcak estimates that there are at least 12 million potential archaeological sites yet to be discovered. That means the sky is the limit for her project now that it has got off the ground successfully.

A.To interview citizens via the Internet.
B.To make more remains be World Heritage Sites.
C.To build databases for unknown cultural heritage.
D.To identify unknown ancient sites through joint efforts.
根据第三段中的“to crowdsource (众包) the initial assessment of satellite images for signs of cultures from long ago”可知,这个项目的目的是通过共同努力发现未知的古代遗址。

A. India lacks thorough archaeological work.
B.Indians call for the protection of their rich culture.

4.What does the underlined sentence “The possibilities are huge” in Paragraph 6 mean? D
A.Parcak's project will become successful.
B.Few countries will start satellite surveys.
C.There will be amazing discoveries in India.
D.More archaeological sites will be identified.

The ruins of a Maya city have been discovered in Guatemala with the help of the remote sensing technique LiDAR. This lost city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna, but shows that these famous areas are a small part of this lost urban network.
Hidden under the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve site, more than 60, 000 human-made features—homes, canals, highways, and more—have been identified in aerial (从飞机上的) images collected by some international researchers headed by the PACUNAM Foundation, a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya Empire.
These ancient peoples obviously created these imaginative cultures based on their known relics (遗迹), but the new research has suggested that the size of this lost society is far beyond what experts imagined. The findings will be explored in a one-hour documentary called “Lost Treasures of the Maya Snake Kings”, to be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel.
This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors, which can survey lands in 3D by bouncing pulses off the ground from unmanned air vehicles and others. LiDAR is exceptionally useful for detecting archeological (考古的) sites, as it gets through jungles and other features that hold up exploration on the ground. The technique has made many discoveries become a reality in recent years. For instance, major finds at Angkor, Cambodia and Caracol, Belize can explain what it did. The final goal is to survey Guatemala's lowlands with it.
“There are entire cities we didn't know about now showing up in the survey data,” Francisco Estrada-Belli, one of the lead archeologists on the project, said in Nat Geo's coming documentary. “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities about the mysterious people who built this urban network there that we don't know about, and we will push back the frontiers with the technology,” he added.
5.What does the underlined word “Those” in paragraph 2 refer to? B

C.Researchers.
D.Aerial images.
6.What does the author want to convey in paragraph 4? D
A.The working principle of LiDAR sensors.
B.The process of researching Maya civilization.
C.Great importance of Guatemala's lowlands.
D.LiDAR's contribution to discovering the relics.
根据该段中的“This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors”“The technique has made many discoveries become a reality in recent years.”
7.Which words can best describe the lost Maya city? C
A.Small and hidden.
B.Famous and high-tech.
C.Vast and complex.
D.Fully-explored and imaginative.
根据首段中的“This lost city envelops sites like Tikal,Holmul, and Witzna, but shows that these famous areas are a small part of this lost urban network.”和第三段中的“thesize of this lost society is far beyond what experts imagined”及最后一段中的 “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities about the mysterious people who built this urban network there that we don't know about”,可判断,玛雅城是广袤的;根据第二段中的“more than 60,000 human-made features—homes, canals, highways, and more—have been identified...Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya Empire.”
8.What will the archeologists do next? A
A.Continue to explore the unknown.
B.Upgrade the LiDAR technology.
C.Study the documentary carefully.
D.Build a massive urban network.
根据最后一段中的“There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored...and we will push back the frontiers with the technology”可推知,这些考古学家们将继续利用这一技术开拓新的领域,探索未知的地方。

When visitors to the Palace Museum feel a need to sit down for a cup of tea or find a bathroom without a long line, they soon will be able to turn to their smart phones for the information they need.
This modern-day solution comes thanks to an agreement signed on Friday by the museum and Huawei Technologies Co. , the telecommunication giant, to build a “smart network” using 5G technology. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum, China's imperial palace from 1420 to 1924, and the branch museum of the institution under construction in northwestern Beijing.
“It's essential to always stay close to the latest technology to better serve the public,” said Shan Jixiang, former curator (馆长) of the Palace Museum. Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics, such as when the priceless painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival is exhibited again in the future. When it was last exhibited in 2015, visitors stood in long lines until 3 am to get a glimpse. The museum ended up preparing instant noodles to serve the hungry visitors. “I don't want that scenario to reoccur,” Shan said. “Our operation can be done in a more scientific way.”
The new system will also make use of the closed-circuit television cameras that are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum's precious relics. More than 1.86 million of them are housed at the museum, which recorded nearly 20 million visits from the public last year, topping all museums worldwide. “How can we make sure no single visitor who might have evil ideas threatens these treasures?” Shan said. “After adopting the Internet of things, we can instantly detect any motion involving the artifacts to prevent such threats.”
The 5G network also will be used to improve remote consultation through webcams, which will facilitate conversations with overseas scholars to jointly find the best answers to restoration and preservation issues.
4.What do we know about the Palace Museum? C
A.Its visitors won't have to queue up for the bathroom.
B.It served as China's imperial palace for over 600 years.
C.It will cooperate with Huawei Technologies Co. to promote its management.
D.It will set up advanced television cameras for the purpose of safety.
根据文章第二段中的“thanks to an agreement...to build a ‘smart network’ using 5G technology”及第三段中的“Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics”可知故宫博物院与华为公司合作是为了提升其管理水平,故选C。

3.此处代指our culture,应用单数形式,所以将them 改为it。
have a better understanding of...
根据文章第一句“There was a lively discussion held in my class last Friday”可知,本篇文章主要讲述的是上周五课堂上进行的讨论,故此处叙述的事情发生在过去,时态应用一般过去时,所以把think改为thought。
feel proud of...
attempt to do sth.
