1970 You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem, but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. In those days people spelt words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn’t made until the time of the Qing Dynasty.
The largest dictionary in the world is the Ox ford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came “from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.
Murray had not been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a a bank. Later he became an great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metre underground. In winter he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o’clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening.
Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, and his two daughters were among them. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It had more than 15 000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!

Lu Xun was an excellent writer and thinker of modern China. He took part in the May Fourth New Culture Movement of 1919. He could be said to have laid the foundation (基础) of modern literature (文学) in China. You couldn’t believe that he almost became a doctor! So how did Lu Xun give up the study of medicine and take up writing
When he was young, his father fell badly ill and little Lu Xun bought medicine for him. But the medicine bought from a quack doctor (庸医) did his father no good at all, and his father died. With a deep sadness and great anger, Lu Xun promised to study the most modern medical skills and help people through medicine. He studied hard, and was accepted to study in Sendai Medical College in Japan.
However, one event changed Lu Xun’s life. One day, the teacher played a film of news in class. In the film, Japanese soldiers were preparing to kill a Chinese while some Chinese were watching it with great interest, as if it had nothing to do with them. After that, Lu Xun thought he should treat the numb (麻木的) spirits of Chinese.
For this reason, he gave up the study of medicine and moved to Tokyo. He produced a magazine with some friends there. As a writer, Lu Xun hoped that he could save Chinese people with his pen. Many of his works were translated into the leading languages, including English, Russian, German, French and Japanese.

Mark Zuckerberg, who starts the social network Facebook, often wears jeans and a T-shirt to work, including to important business meetings. Not everyone agrees with him. Some people say he doesn’t look serious this way.
Harvard Business School researcher, Francesca Gino, has a different idea. While most people seem to think that dressing differently from those around you generally has a bad influence, she believes it can actually have a positive (积极的) effect. And she’s done experiments to support her idea. When her researchers, wearing sportswear, visited the expensive shops in Italy, they were usually viewed as wealthier and more important people than those who were well-dressed in designer clothes.
Do people always view less formal (正式的) clothing, more positively Researchers in France took their research out into the street, to the general public. The video they made shows an actor dressed in a well-cut suit and shiny shoes. While walking along the road, he begins to cough badly, stops to catch his breath and falls down. Before he even calls for help, people rush to help him. In another video, the actor appears at the same crowded place and repeats the actions in exactly the same way. But this time, no one comes to help. What’s the difference He’s wearing untidy clothes and looks like a homeless person. In a situation like this, the clothes you re wearing could mean the difference between life and death.
It seems that our clothing doesn’t only change the way others view us, but also the way we see ourselves. In an experiment testing students’ ability to pay attention to details (细节), the group wearing white lab coats did the best. Why Researchers told them that they were wearing the doctors’ coats. The experiment didn’t show whether such influences would last long. More experiments are needed in the future before we decide to make the doctors’ coats a must of fashion.

Many people thought that the USA former President Calvin Coolidge always lived in the White House. However, he sometimes lived in the nearby Willard Hotel.
Once, in the middle of a night, the president woke up to see a thief searching his clothes. Coolidge calmly spoke up from the darkness, "I wish you wouldn't take that watch. "
"Why " asked the shocked man.
Coolidge answered, "Take it near the window and read what is engraved (雕刻) on the back of it. " The man read, "Presented to Calvin Coolidge, Speaker of the House, by the Massachusetts General Court. " He was very surprised! "Are you President Coolidge " he asked. He had never thought he would find the president sleeping in a hotel!
"Yes, I am, " Coolidge said. Then he asked, "Why are you doing this "
The young man explained that he and two friends travelled to Washington D. C. during their college vacation. They spent all of their money and had no money to pay the hotel bill and buy the train tickets back to school. Coolidge added up the cost. It came to$32. "I’ll give you$32asaloan (借款) , " the president said, " and I expect you to pay me back. " The young man thanked him. Coolidge left him with this warning, "You are a nice boy. You are better than what you are acting. You are starting down the wrong road. Just remember who you are. "
It wasn't until after the death of Mr. Coolidge that this story was allowed to come out. I was first published in the newspaper Los Angeles Times.
