It was the summer of my 16th year. I was 2,000 miles away from home and my heart was aching. I had travelled from the mountains of West Virginia to the great plains of Iowa. I was with a group of boys touring a college.
When the trip first started, I was filled with excitement. It was going to be a week of adventure, a week of travel, and the change of starting on a new path in my life. Now five days later I was filled with sadness. I missed my Mom. I missed my Dad. I missed my old, Italian grandmother. I missed the mountains, the green trees, and the smell of the wild flowers in the summertime.
I walked outside and sat down on a chair. I knew that I was at a crossroads and that the decision I was about to make would affect the rest of my life. This college had sounded so good to me a few weeks before. Now, however, I knew that I could never go to college here.
Since that day I have been at many crossroads in my life. Sometimes I have made the wrong choice and have to give up to make things right. More often than not, though, I have felt greatly encouraged and made the choices that took me where I needed to go and helped me to become who I needed to be. Through all this, I have felt my confidence grow deeper and the love in my heart grow stronger. And that, more than anything, has kept me on the right road.
Life is a long and difficult journey but we all can take comfort in knowing that we are loved and watched over every step of the way. Let Love guide your steps and you will always be on your own path.

M: Hello, everyone. My name’s Alex Duffy and I’m here to tell you about my job as a video game writer. I work with game designers to think of good stories, and I write all the dialogues in the game by myself.
When I was in junior high school, I never imagined that I would do this job! I played the violin and that was what I planned to do as my job. But I had an accident when I was playing basketball and hurt my hand, so I had to think of doing something else. My mother wanted me to be a reporter, but I didn’t think it was suitable for me.
I didn’t know what to study at university. I was good at lots of science subjects, including physics and math, but I also loved making people laugh, and I was good at art. In the end, I went to a film school where I studied lighting, special effects, how to use a camera... all that! It was there that I started thinking about working in the video game industry.

A success as a teenager
I always remember my first success in an English contest in junior high school. I have always been interested in English and I can speak English fluently.
Encouraged by my teacher, I signed up for an English story-telling contest held by an English newspaper. At first I was a little nervous and worried, but the teacher said I was sure to succeed. She also helped me with my preparation for the contest.
After my repeated practice and the teacher’s careful guidance, I won first place in the competition. It gave me the confidence to continue to be successful. This success has taught me that hard work, preparation and the help of others are necessary for success.
