Module 5, Unit 2 The environment
Task: Design a poster (Period I)
By Shi Zhichun from Jiangsu Dafeng Senior High School
(江苏省大丰高级中学 侍之春)
Teaching aims:
Students will know how to draw conclusions from listening to something and collect some information on desertification from the lecture they are to listen to.
Students will know how to read for specific information by scanning and skimming.
Students will be aware of the importance and some measures to stop desertification.
Important & difficult points:
To learn how to draw conclusions from listening to something.
To learn to collect the needed information when listening to the teacher’s lecture.
Teaching methods:
Task-based teaching
Practice
Teaching aid:
A multi-media classroom
Teaching procedure:
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Ask the class a question.
What is a poster? (A poster is a large notice, often with a picture on it, that is put in a public place to advertise something. Here are some examples.)
2. Show the class some posters to lead in the task in the section: to design a poster and the two skills to build in this class: listening and drawing conclusions, and reading for information.
Say sth. about the last poster:
What is the topic of the poster? (Desertification.)
How did you draw the conclusion?
(S: Because the land has been turned into a desert, without plants, trees, or water. There is no resident there as well.
T: Great! You’ve thought about the situation and information that you have got and then decided what it means. So remember when you design a poster, you should consider what situation and information you are going to give to your readers. Do you need to give all the information you want to convey? No, it is not necessary. )
3. Ask the class to read the guidelines of Skills Building 1 so that they know how to draw conclusions.
In this period, we will learn how to draw conclusions from listening and read for information.
Step 2 Listening and drawing conclusions (Skills building 1)
1. Part A
1-1 Show the students some pictures and ask them to tell the name of the natural disaster each picture presents. (earthquake, typhoon, draught, flood, fire).
1-2 Ask the students to listen to the short descriptions from news reports and draw a conclusion about what kind of natural disaster occurred in each situation.
1-3 Check the answers to the class.
2. Part B
2-1 Read the instructions to the class and get one student to tell the meaning of “logical” so that they really know how to finish the task.
2-2 Ask the students to listen to the news report once and decide if each conclusion below is logical.
2-3 Check the answers to the class.
2-4 Ask the students to listen to the news report again so as to understand it better.
Step 3 Listening to a lecture (Step 1)
1. Part A
1-1 Show two pictures about desertification to the students and have a free talk with them.
1-2 Group discussion:
Ask the students to read the instructions in Part A including the five questions and then to have a group discussion to give possible answers to them.
Before listening to the lecture, please have a discussion with your partner on the five questions. You may refer to the passage at page 35.
1-3 Let the students listen to the lecture for the first time to take some notes for each question.
1-4 Let the students listen to the lecture for the second time to complete the answer to each question.
1-5 Check the answers one by one and play the recording once again if necessary.
2. Part B
2-1 Get the students to finish Part B by themselves.
2-2 Check the answers to the class.
Step 4 Reading for information (Skills building 2)
1. Warming-up (to guide the students to know the way to read for information)
When you take up a newspaper, what information do you usually expect to read?
When you are reading a newspaper for information you need, is it necessary for you to read it word by word, from the beginning to the end? If not, how do you read it?
2. Pair work (Part A in Skills Building 2)
2-1 Ask the students to work in pairs to talk about the reasons why they read the following.
a newspaper a plane ticket a magazine a website
a bus timetable an advertisement
2-2 Get some students to present their reasons.
3. Competition (Part B in Skills Building 2)
Anyone who finishes the work the quickest may get the chance to present his/her answers.
Step 5 Summary of this period
Step 6 Homework
1. Finish A & B in Step 2 at page 35.
2. Surf the Internet and find more information about desertification to prepare for a poster.
