Jessica Long is one of America's greatest athletes of all time, a speaker, author, advocate and sports personality.
Long’s story began over 9,000 km from the United States in Siberia, Russia. She was born with a rare condition called fibular hemimelia. Fearing that she wouldn't be able to care for her daughter, Jessica's 16-year- old mother was persuaded to put her in an orphanage. Jessica's legs were amputated(截肢) at 18 months. In total, she needed 25 operations. At 13 months, Americans Beth and Steve Long adopted(收养) Jessica, who began a new life in Baltimore, Maryland.
Long became interested in swimming when she was very young. “When I'm in the pool, I never really feel like I'm missing my legs,” she would say.
Soon enough, Long was selected as Maryland's Female Swimmer of the Year with a Disability. Aged 12, she first competed in the Paralympic Games at Athens 2004, and took home three gold medals.
In the Rio Games in 2016, Long won one gold, three silvers, and a bronze. For most athletes, this would be considered a surprising achievement, but for Long, the performance didn't live up to her expectations. She was physically, and mentally, exhausted.
Part of Long’s healing process was to realize that she was so much more than an athlete. Success in the pool, combined with her experiences in life, meant that she was an inspiration to people well beyond sports.
“Winning gold medals is good, but there’s something so special about having a little girl who has just lost her leg from cancer come up and tell me I’ m her hero,” she told People.
She began her new task.
“It took me years to realize that if I act ashamed and I try to hide then people kind of react the same way,” she added. "But if I wear my shorts or a cute summer dress and I show off my legs and I’m willing to talk about it, people are engaged and they want to know about my story. The only disability in life is an inactive attitude.”

Some 120 kilometers north of Rome, street signs along the road tell drivers they’re bound for “the dying town” Civita di Bagnoregio. The village stands on a declining plateau. It has gone through landslides, earthquakes, and erosion since humans’ first settlement about 2,500 years ago. Nowadays Civita has been reduced to only 90 by 150 meters.
In the Middle ages, the size of the plateau was three times its size nowadays, and the population was over 3,000, yet the river surrounding Civita gradually made the town collapse from the bottom up. Since 1695, when a destructive earthquake took place in Civita, many people were forced to escape from their hometown, and the population there has never recovered. By the 1920s, there were merely 600 residents in the town. Currently, there are only about 10 residents. What a small population it has!
The survival of Civita is uncertain. However, as the news that the town was about to disappear started to widely spread, more and more people wanted to visit it. Now up to 10, 000 people visit Civita per day. And there is doubt as to whether it is dying. The flood of people and money leads to natives longing for the rescue of the town.
Yet the actual situation in Civita is that there are no grocery stores, hardware, or convenience stores. People living there can only have access to a handful of restaurants and tourist shops. Besides, they have to get supplies through a narrow, 300-meter-long bridge that connects them to the outside world.
Today, Civita is pursuing a UNESCO World Heritage designation, in order to earn official recognition of its landscape and adaptability to nature. Recently, the town presented a 242-page document to the UNESCO, hoping that it will help strengthen Civita’s role as a site of historical and cultural significance. Also, Civitas UNESCO team plans to create tourist attractions in the surrounding towns. If Civita recovers successfully, other towns in the same situation could find a direction based on its experience.
16.What has made Civita become smaller
A.The inconvenient transport. B.The settlement of humans.
C.The natural conditions. D.The decrease of the population.
17.Why do so many visitors flood in Civita every day
A.Because they want to rescue it.
B.Because they are attracted by its scenery.
C.Because they are interested in its natives.
D.Because they want to catch the last chance to see it.
18.Which word can best describe the possible future of Civita
A.Unchangeable. B.Hopeful.
C.Disappointing. D.Doubtful.
19.Where can we read this passage
A.In a newspaper. B.In a chemical textbook.
C.In a diary. D.In a medical paper.
二、七选五
As a speaker of 10 languages I know the benefits of speaking more than one language. Actually, it is not a big challenge to learn languages. We only have to change the way we learn them. ___20___
Language learning is hard.
It is only difficult to learn a language if you don’t want to. ___21___ What you mostly need to do is spend some time listening and reading. Believe me, it is that simple. I have done it many times. Soon you feel the satisfaction of understanding another language. Before you know it you start speaking.
___22___
No, you don’t. Anyone who wants to, can learn. In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted at languages. Foreign athletes in North America usually learn to speak English faster than people in more formal learning environments. In language learning it is attitude that determines success.
You have to live where the language is spoken.
Some immigrants (移民) to North America never learn to speak more than broken English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak perfect English. In 1968, I learned to speak Mandarin fluently while living in Hong Kong, where few people spoke it. ___23___ You can download it to your iPod and listen. Where you live is not a problem.
I would love to learn but I don’t have the time.
How about the time you spend waiting in line, doing things around the house, going for a walk ___24___ Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour. If you believe you will achieve great results, and if you enjoy doing it, as I do, you will find the time.
I believe if you can avoid these traps, we will surely become masters of language learning.A.The following are some tips for you to follow.
B.You have to have a gift for learning languages.
C.Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult
D.We need to avoid some common misunderstandings
E.Languages can only be learned instead of being taught.
F.Why not use that time to listen to a language on your iPod

本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了美国残疾游泳运动员Jessica Long的事迹。
4.
细节理解题。根据第一、二段内容特别是第二段“At 13 months, Americans Beth and Steve Long adopted(收养)Jessica, who began a new life in Baltimore, Maryland.(13个月大时,美国人Beth和Steve Long收养了Jessica,她在马里兰州的巴尔的摩开始了新生活。)”

她的最后一句话“The only disability in life is an inactive attitude.(生活中唯一的缺陷就是消极的态度。)”是重点——身体的残疾不是残疾,精神的残疾(消极的人生态度)才是真正的残疾。所以杰西卡在最后一段中一直想强调面对残疾的必要性。故选C。
