Teaching Steps Students Activities Intention & Explanation
Warming up activities: say hi Wave hands Hand shake Hand slap Fist bump Students would listen to the teacher and follow the teacher’s instructions to say hi to the teacher and to each other. This is meant to warm up the class.
New words: Show some photos about my trip to Shanghai last weekend, then teach the new words, such as hotel, lamp, and enjoy. Look at the photos, get a draft impression of hotel, then learn the new words. This is meant to get students’ attention, disperse the difficulty in learning the new words.
Before reading: Have a video call with Wu Yifan, ask students how did Wu Yifan feel last weekend. Ask them to find out the meaning of “comments” while the first time reading. Watch the video call. Get some instructions. Learn to skim. Get ready for reading. It is easier for students to comprehend the text if they have right emotional foundation. Through the video call, students can get some useful information before reading.
While reading: Read for the first time: Read the whole text for 1 minute. After reading, ask students the meaning of “comments”. Ask some students to read the first sentence of the text. Read for the second time: 1.Ask students to answer 2 multiple choice questions when they read paragraph 1. Teach the word “broken”. 2. Ask students to answer 2 true or false questions when they read paragraph 2. Teach the word “lamp” 3. Explain and then ask students to read paragraph 3 together. Teach the word “loud”. Follow teacher’s instructions and read the text for 2 times. Learn some new words. Scan for some useful information while reading and answer some questions. Read one paragraph together. Students would comprehend the text better by scanning. Teacher would know their comprehension level by their answers to some questions.
Post reading: Sum up the text by describing the 3 pictures. Students fulfill teacher’s sentences Students would gain more understanding of the text. They would be able to use past tense to describe things that happen in the past.
Moral education: Ask students to make some rules in groups for their own hotel as a manager who works in a hotel. After discussing, ask some students to stick their rules on the blackboard. Ask students to think about some behavior standards as a guest in the hotel. Then play a video about the standards. Write on board Students discuss in groups about the rules in hotels. Present after group work, stick the rules they’ve made on the blackboard. Watch a video about behavior standards in hotels. Try to practice the rules in real life. This is meant to let the students know some behaviors, to expand their horizon, and break the bounds of their ways of thinking. Through group work, they would know how to cooperate with others.
Homework: Ask students to finish the exercises on page 19. Ask them to practice the rules in real life. Ask them to bring some photos next class, and tell friends about their trips. Watch and memorize the homework. Do it after class. Consolidate the knowledge that students have learned today.
Greeting: Ask about students’ feelings today, and say goodbye to the students. Talk about their feelings today, and say goodbye to the teacher. This is meant to put an end to this class.
