Text10
W: Kevin has been using the Pomodoro Technique to help manage his time. The technique was
invented by an Italian man who named it after a tomato-shaped timer his mother used when she was
cooking. Pomodoro is Italian for tomato. This timer is the key to being productive without wasting
time. Offices and factories might use this technique for work, but Kevin uses it to study. First, he
breaks his work up into separate jobs, and then he uses a timer to separate his time into periods of
busy work and short breaks. For example, when he writes an essay, he thinks about the stages of the
task and writes a to-do list. Then he sets the timer to 25 minutes and starts working on the first item
on the list. When the timer goes off, he takes a break of three to five minutes. He moves around
during the break, and of course, he crosses the task off on his list. Then he starts another 25-minute
3
work period. Do you want to try the Pomodoro Technique Be sure to use a kitchen timer. If you
use the timer on your phone, you’ll get distracted. In fact, Kevin turns his phone off when he studies.
The method works because it keeps Kevin from wasting time. The short period of work allow
Kevin to concentrate, and he gets his homework done faster than before.

A few days ago, I was sitting in a Thai restaurant enjoying a meal when I got on a phone call from a
friend I hadn’t spoken to in a long time. In my enthusiasm and excitement, I talked quite louder than usual
voice and in Spanish, my mother tongue.
高一英语学科 试题 第 2 页(共 8页)
A few minutes into the call, an old lady sitting at the table beside mine got up, seemingly annoyed, and
asked the restaurant staff to relocate (重新安排) a table as far away as possible from this man who seemed
to be impolite.
I sank in my seat out of embarrassment. I ended the call soon afterwards and wanted to apologize.
Before getting up, I looked around to see where she was and she was at the table farthest away from me. I
noticed that the lady was alone and staring out the window. I found a tinge (气息) of sadness or anxiety and
perhaps a desire for aloneness and peace. But I had clearly destroyed it minutes earlier.
Right then I gave up my plan for a traditional apologetic gesture. Seeing those funny smile cards in my
wallet, I took one out and wrote some words to express my apology. On signing my restaurant bill, I asked
a waiter to secretly charge the lady’s meal to me and hand her the smile card instead of her bill.
Did she take it the wrong way, I wondered Did she get confused Did she refuse the anonymous (匿
名的) offer And so on. I just waited and felt nervous to learn the result. To my pleasant surprise, things
turned out the best possible way.
The waiter approached me in a joy, telling me, “In the many times she had dined here before, I had
never seen the old lady smile as she did when receiving the smile card and the $0 bill. She thanked me even
though I explained that someone else did the job.”
21. The old lady changed her seat mainly because of __________.
A. her private phone call B. the author’s loud voice
C. the views out of the window D. the restaurant staff’s mistake
22. What did the author want to do first after he ended his phone call
A. Apologize to the lady. B. Pay for the lady’s meal.
C. Conduct an experiment. D. Give the lady a smile card.
23. Which of the following is the best title of this passage
A. A Misunderstanding Caused by Different Culture
B. An Unpleasant Experience in Thailand
C. A Smile Card for a Sincere Apology
D. An Old Lady Who Never Smiles
B
Just a year ago, the colors were bright under the waves. Now it’s gray — the Maldivian reef is dead.
The coral is killed by the pressure of rising temperatures.
Coral reefs are areas underwater where small creatures live. The coral is hard material formed on the
bottom of the sea by the skeletons of those creatures. But the world has lost about half its coral reefs in the
last 30 years. Scientists are working to prevent their destruction. Because of global warming, over 90
percent of corals are expected to die by 2050. “To lose coral reefs is to basically undermine the health of
the human race,” said Ruth Gates, director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.
Why are coral reefs important Coral reefs support a fourth of all undersea species, as well as half a
billion people worldwide. They serve as barriers to protect coastlines from the storms. They provide
billions of dollars from tourism, fishing and other trade. They are also used in medical research for cures
for diseases. “Everyone should be concerned,” said biologist Ove Guldberg at Australia’s University of
Queensland. “This is not just some distant dive destination. This is the basic structure of the ecosystem we
高一英语学科 试题 第 3 页(共 8页)
depend on.”
The ocean is getting warmer. A rising temperature of just one to two degree Celsius can force coral to
expel the algae (驱逐海藻) that live there. This leaves their white skeletons uncovered. It is a process
called “bleaching”. Sixteen percent of the world’s corals died of bleaching in 1998. The problem has
become much worse in recent years.
“We’ve lost 50 percent of the reefs, but that means we still have 50 percent left,” said Ruth Gates, who
is working in Hawaii to “train” corals to survive rising temperatures. Gates says it is time to start “thinking
outside the box”— find creative ways to help them.
24. The underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 2 means ___________.
A. weaken B. regain C. promote D. overlook
25. What’s the major concern of the scientists like Ove Guldberg
A. People won’t find a dive destination in the future.
B. The effort to save corals will turn out to be fruitless.
C. The destruction of coral reefs will affect the earth ecosystem.
D. The bright sea has lost its charm because of those dead corals.
26. The fourth paragraph is mainly about ___________.
A. the harm of algae B. the process of “bleaching”
C. the importance of coral reefs D. the change of ocean temperature
27. Ruth Gates’ attitude towards the protection of corals is ___________.
A. proud B. cautious C. casual D. optimistic

A conference was held with former technology industry leaders calling for immediate measures to
protect children from smartphone addiction.
Among those major changes is Tristan Harris—a former high-level employee at Google. He just
organized a group that will seek to gather and publish evidence of how digital devices and social media can
harm children and young people. Harris says he believes companies like Google, Facebook and Apple have
a “moral responsibility” not to create technology products that can “hijack how the mind works”.
The conference where Harris spoke was supported by Common Sense Media, a child and family
activist group. The organization says research suggests that half of all teenagers feel addicted to their
mobile devices, while about 60 percent of parents believe their kids are addicted.
The group also mentions a recent study of eighth-graders that found heavy users of technology were
56 percent more likely to say they are unhappy, while 27 percent more likely to be depressed. Even
Facebook spoke of research last year suggesting that social media use can harm mental health when used in
certain ways.
James Steyer is the founder of Common Sense. He says more than half of schools in the US are
already members of the organization. The group provides teachers and parents with learning materials
intended to help students develop critical thinking skills and balance their digital lives.
Some US schools, however, have tried to limit or remove technology to improve learning. One of
them is in Silicon Valley, the center of the American tech industry.
The Waldorf School of the Peninsula does not use any computers or digital technology in its education
高一英语学科 试题 第 4 页(共 8页)
programs up to the seventh grade. The school’s website says while Waldorf teachers recognize the role
technology can play in the classroom, it must wait until the student reaches the right developmental age.
Normally when students reach high school, they are allowed to use computers and digital tools in the
classroom.
28.What is Facebook, Google and Apple’s “moral responsibility” according to Tristan Harris
A.Preventing children from chatting on social media.
B.Stopping making products that do harm to young people.
C.Providing parents with materials to help their children.
D.Finding a way to get children away from addiction.
29.What do we know from the last two paragraphs
A.Waldorf School bans technology from its education programs.
B.Waldorf School doesn’t believe that computers can improve learning.
C.Waldorf School pays much attention to improving learning.
D.Waldorf School limits the use of digital tools in its classrooms.
30.What is the text mainly about
A.Computer Companies Should Live up to Their Moral Responsibility.
B.Digital Addiction Does Harm to Children’s Mental Health.
C.Waldorf School Doesn’t Use Digital Tools in its Education Program.
D.A Conference Calls for Actions to Protect Children from Digital Addiction.

A popular person is someone who is admired, appreciated, or loved by their peers. Others want to be
associated with them, and they have plenty of friends. A popular person usually has a high social status in
their peer group. 31
Care about your appearance.
Taking pride in your appearance is one of the simplest ways to improve your social prospects and alter
the way people think about you. You do not have to wear expensive or fashionable clothes to become popular.
32
Be confident.
If you want people to like you for who you are, you have to also like yourself. 33 When people
notice the confident way you hold yourself, they’ll realize you are someone worth being around.
Join in.
34 Don’t walk the halls with your head lowered or skip lunch because you have no one to sit with;
talk to people and get to know them. Show an interest in what’s going on around you. Take part in classes like
art and PE as these are often cooperative, team-building environments. Before long you’ll start to pick up on
what people are like and begin to make friends that share common interests.
35
Spend time hanging out with a lot of different people. People who are truly popular are comfortable
being friendly with everyone they meet with. Don’t just be friends with one group or type of person, but make
an effort to get to know everyone. You’ll begin bridging gaps in separate groups and become known as a
