What’s more, watching movies at home, people wouldn’t have to face any traffic(交通) problem. It is free to watch movies at home. The new live action version of the Disney movie Dumbo (2019) expands (扩展) on the early movie (1941) with some new ideas.
Dumbo creates parallels (相似之处) between the baby elephant, whose flying skills bring a circus (马戏团) back to life, and his human friends: Milly, Joe and their father.
Challenges come when businessman V. A.Vandevere makes Dumbo the star of an amusement park. He treats Dumbo badly and even hits him. But Dumbo’s friends and circus family come to save him. They manage to help Dumbo get out of the park.
Director Tim Burton took great care in choosing the film’s actors, even down to the tiny role of a snake charmer (驯蛇人). Burton clearly had fun recreating the Manhattan of a century ago. The warm browns and reds recall images that were popular then.
Details (细节) like these help us remember that Dumbo is supposed to take place during the Woodrow Wilson administration (1913 to 1921). But some elements (元素) don’t fit, for example, much of the language belongs to the texting generation (一代)—that is, the generation that grows up with messaging, texting, and emailing. Elements like these place Dumbo in a time period that could be today or 100 years ago or never at all.

When Wang Haiyan was young, her favorite toys weren’t Barbie dolls. Instead, she started learning to make shadow puppets (皮影) from her father at 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practicing and spreading the art.
Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather (皮) or paper, with music and singing. Invented during the Western Han Dynasty, it tells us about folk and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county, Shaanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet-makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving (雕刻), and painting. Carving is the most difficult part.
“We have a special carving technique (技巧) — moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said. “You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and only move the leather in your left hand.”
It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick (砖块) to strengthen her left hand while practicing. It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. “The complicated (复杂的) steps make it hard to spread the folk art,” she said.
But Wang has found a way to do so. In 2016, she made shadow puppets based on the cartoon series Huyao Xiaohongniang (《狐妖小红娘》) and gave a live performance. She used colors like blue and purple that are rarely seen in shadow puppetry and added more sticks to the puppets to make the performance more lively.
