阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st or January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes, and they may drink champagne(香槟) at midnight. During the first minutes of the New Year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the New Year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the New Year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh(重新).
Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the New Year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the New Year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the New Year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. In the United States, some people eat black eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them!

When I was a little child, my parents divorced, making my mother a single parent. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to do it badly enough. She sent that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school—walking on my own!
When the Great Depression (大萧条) happened, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the family. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
My real change took place on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was angry that the second-class hotel charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for a common American family. I decided to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children.
Not surprisingly, my mother was one of my strongest supporters. We experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my mind, I strongly believed we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

A. funny B. sad

C. Friends. D. Classmates.
11. According to the passage, what made him start a motel by himself
A. His successful business.
B. His terrible experience in the hotel.
C. His mom’s support.
D. His wife’s advice.
12. In your opinion, which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother
A. Honest and hard-working.

[2021·河北衡水中学模拟]The African grey parrot's ability to talk and mimic sounds makes it charming companion. African grey owners often report that their greys often times talk in context and can understand their people's emotions (情感). The African grey parrot is not just a top talker—this bird is also known for its extreme intelligence, which gives them the name “The Einsteins of the Bird World”.
The bird is medium sized, dusty looking and almost pigeon like. It has a bright red tail, intelligent orange eyes, and a stunning scalloped (扇形的) pattern to its feathers. Their diet in the wild consists mostly of nuts, seeds, fruits, and leafy matter.
At home, African greys need plenty of toys that challenge their intelligence, such as food searching and puzzle toys. Nutri Berries by Lafeber Company are a perfect choice, which, with a balance of grains, seeds and other nutrients in the shape of a berry, encourages African greys to hold, bite off, and even play with, just as they do in the wild.
African greys seem especially affected by stress and disturbing noise in their environment and can be put more at ease by placing one corner of the cage against a wall as opposed to in the middle of a room.
African grey parrots are more likely to suffer from lack of Vitamin A/beta carotene, and therefore benefit from eating vegetables high in beta carotene, such as cooked sweet potato and fresh kale. Lack of Vitamin D is another concern, especially for greys on a poor diet. Offering a balanced, pill shaped diet, such as Nutri Berries, helps prevent vitamin and mineral shortage.
13.Why are African grey parrots called “The Einsteins of the Bird World”?
A.Because of their brain size.
B.Due to their talking ability.
C.Owing to their rich emotions.
D.On account of their intelligence.

A.A brand of bird food.

16.Where can we most probably find the passage
A.In a wildlife magazine.

D.On a shopping website.
13.D 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“this bird is also known for its extreme intelligence, which gives them the name ‘The Einsteins of the Bird World’”可知,非洲灰鹦鹉得此称号的主要原因是其不同寻常的智慧。故选D。
14.A 词义猜测题。根据第三段中的“Nutri Berries by Lafeber Company are a perfect choice, which, with a balance of grains, seeds and other nutrients in the shape of a berry,...”可 知,Nutri Berries里包含谷物种子和其他营养物。由此可知Nutri Berries指的是鸟类的一种食物。故选A。

[精彩范文]
Dear editor,
In recent years, people in most cities are not allowed to light fireworks and crackers during the Spring Festival. And I'm in favour of the policy.
First, fireworks and crackers will cause air pollution. When firework is set off, it will produce lots of sulfur dioxide which is very harmful to our environment. Second, fireworks and crackers are very dangerous. Not only do fireworks and crackers often cause injury to people but also cause fire accidents.
All in all, I think it is reasonable to ban lighting fireworks and crackers.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra,_lived with their parents in a poor neighbourhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realised he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners,_determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the New Year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. Here’s the story of my growth over the past year. If anyone is inspired(激励) by this, that’s wonderful.
I’d been stuck as this under confident, fat and just frightened girl for years and years and years. Since I was a little girl, I’d been stuck like this, and I had lived a life where I’d be afraid of everything. But then it all started changing. Something clicked, and in over a period of 6 months I finally managed to stick to one of my diets, bringing me from overweight straight down to underweight. This proved(证明) that I could change myself.
One single time, I heard about a public speaking thing going on at my university, and for the first time, I managed to keep up the courage to go there. For the first time I was able to share my story, and able to do it in front of so many people possibly judging(评判) me, and suddenly all the fears about speaking publicly started vanishing. I never felt more confident.
This taught me I could get rid of (去除) my fears. It was from that point on that my road to change went from a rocky mess to a full on empty highway.
Using the fact that I could change, and that I could get rid of my fears, I started working on them one by one. My fear of talking to strangers, my fear of asking simple questions, my fear of hanging out with people, my fear of being myself ... All of them were gone. And I still continue to progress to this day. I’ve never stopped.

9. When Kemmons was a little child, what his mother usually told him was .
A. funny B. sad
C. worrying D. encouraging

C. Friends. D. Classmates.
11. According to the passage, what made him start a motel by himself
A. His successful business.
B. His terrible experience in the hotel.
C. His mom’s support.
D. His wife’s advice.
12. In your opinion, which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother
A. Honest and hard-working.
B. Careful and beautiful.
C. Loving and supportive.
D. Strict and helpful.

[2021·河北衡水中学模拟]The African grey parrot's ability to talk and mimic sounds makes it charming companion. African grey owners often report that their greys often times talk in context and can understand their people's emotions (情感).
