I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2 to 3 week old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all—LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Fabien Cousteau was born with deep love for the ocean. His grandfather and his father were ocean explorers and documentary filmmakers. Fabien spent his early years on his grandfather's ships. Today, Fabien follows in his family's footsteps to protect the planet's endangered ocean life. With his vast knowledge and experience, he tries to strike a balance between environmental problems and market economies.
Fabien is well known for his study of sharks. During 2000—2002, he created a TV special called Attack of the Mystery Shark based on the shark attacks that occurred along the New Jersey shoreline in the summer of 1916.Then in 2003—2006, with the help of a large crew, Fabien created a shark submarine (潜艇) that enabled him to put himself inside the shark world, providing people with a rare view of the mysterious and often misunderstood creatures.
For the next four years (2006—2010), Fabien was part of a series called Ocean Adventures, which offered a rare look into some of the most fantastic ocean species (物种) and environments.
In 2010, Fabien started Plant A Fish, a nonprofit project for children to help restore local water ecosystems by replanting key ocean species. Save the world, one fish at a time. The project is still in progress now and its final goal is to plant 1 billion “fish” worldwide.
From June 1 to July 2, 2014, Fabien and his team spent 31 days underwater to research how climate change and pollution are affecting the oceans. Fabien's Mission 31 broke new ground by going deeper, longer and further, exposing (显露) the world to the adventure and the mystique (神秘) of what lies beneath.
Fabien is currently working on a documentary film about the adventures of Mission 31, as well as building an Ocean Learning Center to provide children around the world with the opportunity to learn about oceans and engage with ocean explorers directly through social media.

On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish - sand eels- lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout. Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful; anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances - sometimes over 150 kilometers. It's very cold up there and everything soon freezes solid.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate change, global wanning and many reports of terrible natural disasters, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs

The UK government has promised to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions (排放) by at least 68% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, marking a significant increase from its current goal.
The new goal comes nine days ahead of the UK hosting a“climate action summit (峰会)”to encourage other countries to declare tougher climate plans, known as Nationally Deter-mined Contributions (NDCs), under the Paris Agreement. Current NDCs will raise temperatures by 3℃. And stronger plans are needed to meet the Paris deal's goal of limiting global warming to 1. 5℃.
"This is the most significant NDCs announcement so far from any major economy," said Richard Black at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, a UK-based think tank, in a statement.
The new goal is exactly in line with what the government's official climate adviser, the Climate Change Committee, called for in a letter published earlier today. The group said 68% would be "“world-leading" compared with existing plans of governments.
The UK had previously promised a 53% cut in emissions as part of a joint (共同的) effort with the rest of the European Union, but the UK is determined to produce a new NDCs. Separately, the UK had also promised a 57% cut by 2032 domestically.
It is clear that far more action will be needed if the UK is to meet the new goal. The government's own analysis last week showed that recent major methods, such as banning newoil-fueled car sales by 2030,had failed to do enough to put the UK on track even for the old goal of 57% by 2032. The new goal obviously widens that gap further.
12. Why did the UK declare its new goal before “climate action summit”
A. To show its former plans are based on facts.
B. To blame other countries for their low goals.
C. To call on other countries to take bigger steps.
D. To take the lead in controlling greenhouse gas emissions.
13. What is the UK’s new goal for reducing emissions
A. 15%. B. 68%. C. 57%. D. 53%.
14. What's the author s attitude to the UK's new goal
A. Disapproval. B. Doubtful.
C. Unconcerned. D. Subjective.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. A new goal will be put forward on“climate action summit"
B. UK came up with a common goal under the Paris Agreement
C. UK's recent major policies are far from its predetermined goal
D. UK sets an ambitious climate goal of 68% emissions cut by 2030

The cane toad (海蟾蜍) was imported to Australia in 1935 to protect sugarcane crops. __16__ Experts estimate that there are currently over 200 million samples spread across Northern Australia, and the numbers are only growing. The increasing population is proving to be deadly for many native Australian animal species that hunt the toads as food. __17__
While some animals have learned to completely avoid the frogs, the Australian monitor lizards continue to be killed by them. The lizards that catch small animals love eating cane toads. __18__ It takes the cane toad less than 30 seconds to release enough poison to kill a lizard.
__19__ They decided to train the lizards to avoid the cane toads. To carry out the idea they went to a region of northwestern Australia that had not yet been invaded by cane toads and fed the wild lizards with young cane toads. Though the smaller animals release the same poison as the adults, they do so in smaller amounts. __20__ The researchers say it took just one or two tests to teach the lizards to stay away from cane toads. They continued to avoid the animals even when the larger cane toads arrived.
A.Not surprisingly, their population has dropped sharply.
B.Unfortunately, in most cases, it turns out to be their last meal.
C.With very few natural enemies, their population began to grow rapidly.
D.Now a team of researchers came up with a good plan to save the lizards.
E.Gradually, the lizards learned to eat only the mildly poisonous cane toads.
F.Therefore, while the poison does make the lizards sick, it does not kill them.
G.That's because cane toads release some deadly poison when they sense danger.

On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England.(1918年8月24日星期六,雨下得很大,在英格兰东北海岸一个叫桑德兰的城市上空轰鸣)"可知,1918年8月24日的雨下得很大。rain cats and dogs表示"倾盆大雨",故选A。
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland.
It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! 及…will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs 可知,作者用与英文谚语 it was raining cats and dogs 相关的表述 it may really begin to rain cats and dogs,含蓄地表达了他对目前环境的担忧。故选B。

D. UK sets an ambitious climate goal of 68% emissions cut by 2030
12. C 13. B 14. B 15. D
由第二段中的“The new goal comes nine days ahead of the UK hosting a “climate action summit(峰会)” to encourage other countries to declare tougher climate plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs), under the Paris Agreement.”(这一新目标是在英国主办“气候行动峰会”的九天前提出的,该峰会旨在鼓励其他国家根据《巴黎协定》宣布更严厉的气候计划,即国家确定贡献(简称NDC)。)
由第一段“The UK government has promised to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions(排放)by at least 68% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, marking a significant increase from its current goal.”(英国政府承诺,到2030年,该国的温室气体排放量将比1990年的水平至少减少68%,比目前的目标有了显著的提高。)
由最后一段中的“It is clear that far more action will be needed if the UK is to meet the new goal. The government's own analysis last week showed that recent major methods, such as banning new oil-fueled car sales by 2030, had failed to do enough to put the UK on track even for the old goal of 57% by 2032.”(显然,如果英国要实现这一新目标,还需要采取更多的行动。
根据第一段“The UK government has promised to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions(排放)by at least 68% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, marking a significant increase from its current goal.”(英国政府承诺,到2030年,该国的温室气体排放量将比1990年的水平至少减少68%,这比目前的目标有了显著提高。)

Dear WWF,
There are wetlands in my hometown called Wucheng Town, on the lakeside of the Poyang Lake. When winter comes, many birds from the north fly to live here, including some rare and endangered ones, which adds a beautiful view to my hometown. However, the harm to the birds is various. Eggs are often picked up. Worse still, people even catch birds for meat.
Pollution from chemical factories is also a big problem. Wetland area is decreasing each year!
I strongly hope that WWF can cooperate with our local government to establish a reserve for migrating birds, and at the same time, reduce environmental pollution and protect wetlands!
Yours sincerely,
