台风和飓风都是产生于热带洋面上的一种强烈的热带气旋,只是发生地点不同,叫法不同,在北太平洋西部、国际日期变更线以西,包括南中国海范围内发生的热带气旋称为台风;而在大西洋或北太平洋东部的热带气旋则称飓风,也就是说在美国一带称飓风,在菲律宾、中国、日本一带叫台风;而生成于印度洋、阿拉伯海、孟加拉湾的则称为“旋风”。
台风经过时常伴随着大风和暴雨天气。风向呈逆时针方向旋转。等压线和等温线近似为一组同心圆。中心气压最低而气温最高。 飓风一词源自加勒比海言语的恶魔Hurican,亦有说是玛雅人神话中创世众神的其中一位,就是雷暴与旋风之神Hurakan。而台风一词则源自希腊神话中大地之母盖亚之子Typhon,它是一头长有一百个龙头的魔物,传说其孩子就是可怕的大风。
飓风与龙卷风也不能混淆。后者的时间很短暂,属于瞬间爆发,最长也不超过数小时。此外,龙卷风一般是伴随着飓风而产生。龙卷风最大的特征在于它出现时,往往有一个或数个如同“大象鼻子”样的漏斗状云柱,同时伴随狂风暴雨、雷电或冰雹。龙卷风经过水面时,能吸水上升形成水柱,然后同云相接,俗称“龙取水”。经过陆地时,常会卷倒房屋,甚至把人吸卷到空中。
