A year ago, my friend and I went to a nearby town to attend a wedding. After the reception, we were waiting for a public transport bus to go back home. It was nine o'clock at night, and although many buses passed, none stopped.
We waited for an hour and were getting desperate. We wouldn't be able to stay overnight because it was a weekday, and we both needed to work the next day. It was almost 10 pm when a family who had attended the same wedding passed by in their car. Probably sensing that we were waiting for some means of transport, they stopped and gave us a lift. I was so touched by their kindness, and I expressed my gratitude to them.
When we reached my hometown, the family dropped us at the nearest point from where we could catch a shared taxi to get back to the spot where we had parked our bike. On the way, a laborer stopped the taxi. The driver saw his clothes and asked him whether he had money to pay the fare.
The laborer shook his head and said, "No". On hearing this, the driver refused to take him. I remembered my own plight a few minutes earlier, and I told the driver to allow him to sit with us, as I would pay his fare.
What an immediate opportunity to pass on the family's act of kindness! That night, I felt light-hearted and I went to sleep happily and filled with joy about what I had gotten to do. May this chain of kindness continue!

Many people feel that dream is unique to humans. However, many dog owners will likely disagree on that. They have noticed that their dogs at various times during the sleep may shake legs, snort (哼) and sometimes growl (低声吼叫) which gives the impression that they are dreaming. These things may wonder us about whether dogs dream.
Scientists confirm that dogs probably do dream. It turns out that dog brains and human brains have many similarities during sleep cycles. Researchers used special machines to measure electrical activity in a dog’s brain and human’s brain. Scientists already knew that when humans dream, a certain part of the brain is active during sleep. Researchers discovered that the same part of the brain is active in sleeping dogs. Scientists have other data that back up these findings.
Many people dream that they are trying to move but cannot. Interestingly, part of that experience is not a dream. When people sleep, the brain produces a chemical that causes the dreamer to become temporarily paralyzed (使麻痹). Researchers think this happens so that people cannot physically act out dreams while they are sleeping. Dog brains make the same chemical. In one study during which this chemical was blocked, sleeping test dogs performed physical activities, such as standing up, sniffing around the room for imaginary rabbits, or chasing imaginary balls.
Because of these similarities, researchers believe that the content of a dog’s dream might come from the same source as a human’s dream. “People’s dreams are usually based on things they did that day,” says Dr. Samantha Hudspith. “So there is reason to believe that dogs dream about the things they’ve done that day. Of course, there will never be a way to prove this. Dogs cannot describe their dreams the way that humans can.”
18. What does the underlined phrase “back up” mean in the second paragraph
A. Disagree. B. Support. C. Record. D. Show.
19. What happened to a sleeping dog when this chemical mentioned in paragraph 3 was cut off
A. It woke up. B. It stopped dreaming. C. It acted out its dream. D. It couldn’t move its body.

When most of us think of sand, we immediately think of sunny beaches and summer holidays. But actually it’s in pretty much everything that surrounds us in our everyday lives. From the walls of our homes to the glass bottles in our kitchens and even the mobile phones in our hands, sand is the second most used resource in the world after water: it accounts for more than two-thirds of everything that’s being dug out of the ground. But there isn’t a limitless supply. In fact, a UN report says we might be running out.
According to the report, we use an estimated 15 billion tons of sand every year in the construction industry alone. That’s enough to build a 20m × 20m wall around the equator every year. However, sand can take tens of thousands of years to form: the process starts with rock being eroded (侵蚀) in the mountains and ends, eventually, with sand being in river beds and on the seafloor.
Sand is heavy and difficult to transport, so in developing countries, sand is often mined from the nearest convenient source, and quite often that means a river bed or beach. But beaches and rivers are delicately balanced ecosystems and when a large amount of sand is removed, the balance is upset. The smallest fish, which eat organic matter on the sand in river beds, from the base of the food chain in a river. If this sand is removed, so is the source of food for the bottom feeders. All organisms in a food chain share the joys and the sorrows. Thus, when they disappear, so does the food for the larger fish which would have been caught and eaten, or sold by fishermen.
It is high time we took into consideration the big problem concerning the tiny thing. More and more conservationists are calling for alternatives to sand especially in the construction industry.
22. Why are the things in our daily life mentioned in the beginning
A. To show the uses of sand B. To indicate our relationship with nature
C. To introduce our lifestyles D. To stress the convenience of modern life
23. What does the UN report imply
A. Sand is actually our most used natural resource. B. Sand is used more quickly than it’s formed.
C. The construction industry doesn’t use sand wisely. D. The problem of washing sand is worsening.
24. What does the underlined phrase “the bottom feeders” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The river beds B. The fishermen
C. The larger fish D. The smallest fish
25. Which can be the best title for the text
A. The world is running out of sand B. Alternatives to sand will be found soon
C. Sand mining is unfriendly to nature D. Sand is in need of immediate conservation

第四部分 书面表达
56.Dear Lucas,
How is it going
Recently, a campaign whose topic is “Stay Away from White Pollution, Embrace Green Life” was carried out in our school to battle white pollution and develop a green community. As you know, white pollution negatively impacts the natural environment and the well-being of both animals and humans. Firstly, we cleaned up plastic waste at and around the campus. What’s more, we called on residents to use recyclable items instead of plastic bags and provide them with free cotton bags.
I really appreciate this experience as it raised my awareness of white pollution. I’d avoid using disposable plastics and prompt others to do the same.
Have you ever participate in similar events Please write and tell me.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
